A thank you to Frontier and a photographic study of sorts

Your photos are an excellent argument for external views!

I don't care what limitations are put in place, maybe allow external views only if the weapons are not deployed, but I've seen some beautiful areas myself and couldn't do anything from my Cobra.

I reckon you should be able to buy a camera attachment for your ship. You could even incorporate it into the game play for things like exploration, prospecting etc.

Exactly my thoughts I did propose something like that a while ago:
In the design Document about Exploration there is this sentence:

"• Players can take photographs (essentially screenshots) from their view ports (with and without cockpit and GUI etc)"

Taking photographs should be an actual thing in game play.
I would like to have to buy a device for taking photographs.
I would like there to be cool upgrade options for such a device.
More expensive devices have higher definition, better zoom options and can take photo's in different wavelengths to reveal more information. etc.

I would like there to be missions that require the use of such a device.
This could be reconnaissance missions, espionage missions, cartography missions etc. etc.

I can imagine being a bounty hunter or a pirate, or a spy in the service of the empire for example and studying certain targets from afar with my special optics, zooming in, choosing infrared to reveal heat sources etc. and then taking photographs of them without them being any the wiser.

You would of course see data projected in your view about your chosen zoom, wavelength etc. when using the device.
Perhaps you could then even select a target and project certain basic data about it, like its speed, type of ship etc.

When zooming you would hear perhaps servo motors purring. And when changing wavelengths you would hear electronic blips.
All this to give it a sophisticated techy feeling and to enhance the immersion of the process.

It would be great to have higher res versions of these.

I'm sure I remember Fireytoad on Twitch saying something like if you press ctrl+alt+f10 (or it was maybe shift+alt+f10) then it saves a picture that is something like double your current screen resolution. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find more information or pop along to Fireytoads stream at www.twitch.tv/fireytoad and ask the man himself.

That is the beauty of this game. You can drop by for a frantic quick blast, you can plot strategy playing space entrepreneur, you can just float through space and enjoy the scenery, and dream of stars. :)

Not so much a game as a transcendental experience.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I reckon you should be able to buy a camera attachment for your ship. You could even incorporate it into the game play for things like exploration, prospecting etc.

Now this would be great and could be incorporated into some really interesting gaming mechanics. Exploration and possible espionage first come to mind.

Hi-res versions of the screens are available, link at bottom of original post. And yes, alt-f10 gets you them :)

Awesome shots! The graphic in my game does not look as good, I almost do not recognize the game... ;)

How exactly do you do it? I understand, upper view in a Sidewinder, disable HUD with alt+ctrl+g, and then alt+f10 for a 4k screenhot. Do you photshop it in some kind later? Which file format do you convert/use?

And, most important, do you have a link to versions which I could use as a wallpaper, or as a background for my ED blog?

I was also very impressed by Eta Cephei. Being used to the typical class G stellar objects with their yellow-orange glow, this sun, labeled as red-orange class K star, is blazing in an incredible mix of orange and blue-white. I did not even know that this combination of colour is possible, but the graphic artists really managed to pull this one of. I am in awe! This is full power flarishness, this is rich, this makes me feel exposed, as potentially irradiated to death and disintegrated the instant my ships shield would fail! Honestly, this is so impressive that the Frontier-spaceships suddenly feel so much inadequate for traveling amongst the stars, like, a fairy-market-scooter on a highway.

If you are looking for good locations, this thread has some tips:

A shot of the galaxy either in the galaxy map or when you encounter a specific crash bug would be cool!

Also, try going to Jurua.

These are simply screenshots, the only post work was cropping the images slightly to remove the vertical green line you get on the left side of the 4K image. The file is .bmp and then I converted to JPEG (for my sins) to upload to the web.

full res versions can be downloaded from here: http://imgur.com/a/IjIP7

Simply hover over the image and click on the cog symbol top right and choose 'download full resolution'.

I'm surprised you say your game doesn't look as good as Elite is a very beautiful game. Of course it depends on your settings and hardware too. One thing to note though is I think there's a bug with lighting / shaders atm. It seems to kick in after every hyperspace or supercruise jump. The game colours and contrasts appear washed out. To reset it back to normal go into the galaxy map and back out again. After every jump this is the first thing I do.

Thanks for the link to the locations thread, very useful.

Also, they are some interesting bugs you've encountered, never seen those before.

Yes, my client is plagued by a lot of bugs since beta2.4, might also affect graphic quality, although I suspect it also has to do with my middle-fidelity graphic card and low-fidelity monitor. But it is a beautiful game, for sure! Sometimes I forget to take screenshots and I almost always regret it later.

BTW, the screenshot from Jurua is not a bug. :)

Beautiful shots Hoppryngil! I've seen some great screenshots since I started playing ED but nothing quite so stunning and well composed!

I'll be keenly watching this thread for more so keep up the great work!

PS. Would give your thread a 5 star rep but the feature seems to have been removed with the new forum layout :S

That is an impressive alignment there, almost quadruple!

Make sure you get them all in www.elitegalaxy.org !!

That massive brown dwarf in Jurua scares the hell out of me. Luckily enough I never have the need to go back to that system ever again after smuggling 100 units of Liquor into the system and getting fined 750k Credits for the pleasure. I didn't pay the fine and won't be going back.

Excellent shots! As someone said: one for the best arguments for a good external camera, so we don't have to fly a Siderwinder every time we want to take nice screenshots. Keep 'em coming.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, much appreciated.

EDIT: Also featured your wonderful work in this post on my blog: Stunning images - by Hoppryngill, and on the wallpapers page there. Hope you like the presentation! (Let me know if you don't).

Cheers for the feature on your Elite: Dangerous blog, looks great. Will have a good look through your blog later on today.

Since Jurua has been mentioned twice now it's on my list of places to visit. No smuggling for me whilst there though.

I can't wait your next amazing shoots hoppryngil
...I think they are good enough to make them very official wallpapers, just put ED logo in the corner and job done :)

Yeah, when I left hyperspace and saw me confronted with that.. thing, I first thought it was a black hole. It sure felt like it would suck me in, with that exit-hyperspace speed and suddenly confronted with this unreflective light, this non-darkness. It was an awesome experience and fine surprise.
