What do you expect in the odisey fps? positive fps post

I'm hoping that the FPS element is rather slow and heavy in terms of feel - more Battlefield than CoD (I may not be up-to-date on this though as the last BF game I played was BF3), it would suit Elite better than twitchy stuff.

I'm also looking forward to (probably the most in fact) the increased sense of scale when on foot - if you use the vanity cam from certain angles you'll realise how huge even the small pad ships really are.

Then there's the planetary surfaces, particularly icy worlds, new settlements and I'm curious how the mixed battlefield will play out (on-foot, SRVs, ships and station/settlement defenses)

Finally, the ability to experience the environment from a different perspective (looking out through the window within a station) is another thing I'm eager to check out.

Frontier doesn't appear to be doing a lot with Odyssey. Leaving ships and having to watch the game cut between the cockpit and the ground would be comparable to alt+tabbing to a generic barebones FPS.

TL;DR: Can't be positive about an FPS horseshoed into a space trader game.

Space trader game, The only bit of trading that I have done consciously is what was required to unlock an engineer.
So not just a Space trader game.

I’m with you on that 👍 in my opinion Killzone 2 got it right, even after they ‘nerfed’ the impression of momentum to somewhat pander to the twitch-shooter players; you actually felt like a heavily-laden warmonger rather than the skating-on-ice feel of CoD.

I'm hoping it will feel even more slow/tactical and heavy than BF, more like a half-way between Arma and BF, more tactical feel than BF, but much more accessible than Arma. Like the SWAT games, or the earlier Ghost Recon games.

Anyway, even though I'll probably do some ground combat, it's not even the reason why I'm excited for Odyssey. I'm very looking forward to finally experience the Elite universe from a "person's eyeballs" perspective, to the huge injection of immersion and life in the galaxy that being able to disembark and interacting with NPCs will bring, looking forward to disembark in ports and stations and stretch my legs, wander around, interact with NPCs instead of clicking menu squares, virtually relaxing a bit before heading out.

The feeling of finally embarking on a grand space adventure around the galaxy, a proper space opera, rather than just a vehicle sim.

I also expect that giving mission givers faces and voices will heavily contribute to what I never felt before: engagement with factions. Giving a damn about the outcome of the missions I undertake, other than just the reward. Because now I'm no longer doing a string of text for some credits, I'm doing some task for "those guys/gals" back in the port.

Also very looking forward to have more things to explore, discover, more planets types, more things to do on planets (salvage / scavenge?). Hoping for eerie sites to explore and investigate on foot.

To me the ground combat, just like the ship combat, is just an extra on top, which I'll enjoy more or less depending on how good it will turn out to be. The fact I have always found the ship combat to be "meh" never prevented me from enjoying other parts of the game immensely. If the ground combat turns out to be nice, then even better. If not, just like with ship combat, I'll be too busy with the rest to care.

Overall I expect Odyssey to be just like Horizons: there will stuff I don't really like much, but the bits I will like will be enough to greatly expand the things I do like.

Slow and tactical over run and gun DOOM style. I hope we can get some grade 4 and 5 manufactured materials from outposts. I could use some for my ship's weapon upgrades.

I'm excited about dumping a t9 full of biopoop over a squad of commandos running around. It'll be the 34th century's version of teabagging.

I’m interested to see how lots of it plays out.

  • Jetpacks & grenades being influenced by gravity
  • Whether the sphere of combat has classic objectives for infantry
  • Whether they manage any kind of 'Battlefield' lean and dynamics with the air control / fast vehicle / infantry model.
  • Whether the TTK shield meta holds up
  • Whether slow but powerful plasmas / explosives work on foot
  • Whether the non-combat suits can hold their own at all with only one main weapon.
  • Whether the assassination stealth & subterfuge has any depth, as hinted
  • Whether skulking around decommissioned settlements filled with scavengers is tense and engaging
  • Whether scavenging at POIs has risks

Stuff like that. I’m not sure that everyone is aware they’ve floated stuff like this. But even the combat leaning stuff seems to be more than 'just FPS'...

And I’m hoping there’s more to reveal. On the barter & mission NPCs. On Thargoids. On the whole spread really ;)

Early days, but I think there’s some promise there :)

Not really FPS related, I'm looking forward to driving my SRV in VR on a glorious atmospheric planet. Launching off a cliff or a mountain is great as it is, doing it with the haze and fogging created by atmosphere will be something else. We have trouble gauging distances without haze, our brains are tuned to seeing light skies and atmosphere hazing the distance. I think it will be great.

edit - and add plants etc...

FPS? Yeah, looking forward to it as well :D

That all sounds great.

btw I think they confirmed when scavenging POIs hostile npcs can arrive, something like that?

I don't mind the FPS aspects at all, but am much more interested in just being able to 'walk' around any location it will be possible to do so, as well as sampling missions given by a NPC who is 'here' rather than just a picture on a list of things on offer...

Yeah they’ve definitely said that for abandoned settlements etc. I’m assuming POI scavenging will have some similar risks, but would be good to hear the details :)

(Having stuff like defensive drones emerging if you reconnect power to access an area / operate a door. Stuff like that could be solid, but guess we’ll see ;))

Found it:

Q. Do NPCs spawn only at these new Settlement Outposts or do they appear anywhere on a planet like those parked NPC ships that pop up in random places?
NPC’s will not spawn randomly in the ‘wilderness’, however they may stumble across you at a place of interest.

I'm assuming / hoping scavenging abandoned settlements will draw inspiration from the current "get black box / trade data / etc" space missions, where sometimes enemies arrive (or are already there) during the mission.

I hope it ain't drones or skimmer though, but some NPCs arriving by SRV or by a dropship.

Yeah the dropship confirmation is promising. Think AI NPCs aren't looking too likely at the moment though:

Q. Can NPCs get into NPC vehicles or ships for combat or are those treated separately?
On-foot NPCs do not get into vehicles. They can deploy from dropships.

I hope there'll be some missions where you can hoof it a good distance to a base, scout it out from a nearby hilltop with a sniper rifle, etc. More slow paced, stealthy approach, with some sniping, before things go loud and you blast all the enemies up close.
