First exploration

Lot of stuff there.

What ship do you have now?

I guess you could go in any ship.

I use a Dolphin, it carries all I need, jumps well, never overheats.

If you’ve unlocked Elite in anything, then get over to Jameson’s in Sinrarta Dezhra, all ships, all modules available.

The FSS is simple to use though many don’t like it because it can become tedious after the 1000th time. That will scan the system and log all the bodies in that system. Fitted as standard on all ships.

The Detailed Surface Scanner (DSS) allows you to fire probes probes at bodies to map them, this information will tell you if there are any POIs on the body. You can earn a fair penny mapping ELWs and the like.

I have a Cobra MKlll

What do people use instead of FSS ?

That's a very ambitious target for your first exploraton.
I suggest just aiming to get say 5kly away to see how you get on. You''l learn a lot from just doing that.
I have explored a nebular before, about 2 years ago but my pc was stolen and have now transferred on Xbox.
I honestly can't remember how I did it

I have but it's been about 2 years (see above)
You can use the FSS & DSS anywhere, including the bubble. It’s good advice that above, finding a nearer place.

Have a potter about in the bubble, get used to the tools.

I take an SRV with me when I go, so I can land on planets. I pack an extra fuel tank. I don’t bother with an AMFU (self repair module) some do though. I’ve never needed one. Except that one time I did but then I was almost new at the game and my own mistakes damaged my ship.

I’m sure people have explored in a Cobra but I wouldn’t choose it, no real reason other than I prefer my Dolphin.

I A-rate my FSD and just about D-Rate everything else. I never carry cargo bays.

I agree, and I won't try and dissuade the OP. However, I think it would be beneficial to do something a bit more modest at first. This will give you the feedback you need to decide if and where you will make your next destination. Whether you think a different ship would be desirable, which modules and engineering you'll want to have, how the exploration mechanics work. And don't forget, the bubble is just as far from Beagle Point as Beagle Point is from the bubble.

Good luck with whatever you decide. For what it's worth my first 'real' explo trip was to Jellyfish Nebula to unlock Palin, about 5k LY each way. That was plenty for a first go. I think if I had done so in a Cobra, what I learned on the trip would have pointed me to a different ship for the next one. There is however a certain appeal to doing something such as this in a ship like that. Good hunting commander.

Thank you.
The cobra is the ship I have at the mo but I have 132 mil in the bank.
I don't mind buying another ship

Ranked up, Elite in Combat, Trade or Exploration.
No nothing at all. Only just transferred old account across.
I'm only thinking about exploration because I don't want to grind missions for a pittance when I have 132 mil.
Or is that the wrong way to approach it

There is, I guess, no wrong or right way. There are harder and easier ways :)

I reckon if I were you, I might get my hand back in the game, run a few missions, not for the money but just they’ll take you to different stations which will have different modules.

It also depends on a few other things. You can build a ship that jumps 50-60ly but you might have to do some engineering to do that. Alternatively, you could ignore engineering and go out in a ‘standard’ ship that jumps a bit less, that will make the journey take a bit longer.

Good for you, Like Cmdr Zieman I explore constantly... currently half way to sag A for the 5th time.
Some things that will make your travels easier: AFM units.. get the best and don't leave home without it.
Get the best fuel scoops...required When mapping out your route... route only scoopable stars and do not include class M stars... Mostly Icy planets are found around them. Do scan stars that are already named... you will get credit for them but not the first finder 1.5X credit.
do not use white dwarves to boost off of... you will be cooked before you can jump or if lucky.. the jump boost is not that great... stay with neutrons. Try to follow neutrons out. The first 1000 ly will be frustrating as the stars are getting named left and right.... if running into that.. deviate course left or right, up or down a couple hundred lighty years to see if you get into uncharted space. Persevere and you will do fine....
