ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | The Road to Odyssey - Mission Playthrough

Greetings Commanders,
This is from a discussion in another thread, but I thought I'd copy my reply here so CMs can see it and give appropriate feedback to the devs:

Odyssey is set in the ED Lore with the ED Stellar Forge and ED architecture, stuff I still care about despite having grown bored with being stuck in my ship 24x7. Assuming the actual scenarios are compelling and the gameplay isn't bad (I'm not judging on alpha footage), I'd much prefer doing my FPS gameplay in the world of Elite than Star Wars Battlefront, for example. Hopefully there are more defense-based "hold the line" scenarios where we protect outposts from invaders. I could see flying to some beautiful planet with an incredible view (like a moon in fast orbit of a gas giant) and making myself a home at that specific outpost for a week and just enjoying my space legs while running various FPS scenarios. Then flying my spaceship becomes more a means to an end rather than the end itself. I find this very appealing! It's one of the things I love about Space Engineers.

For me Odyssey promises (assuming it is what I'm picturing in my head) to be a literal game-changer, and that has me kinda excited about ED again.

Man, this needs lots of work before being ready for release.

The graphics look dated, floating models and hardly anything in the way of AI.
Gravity seems inconsequential, but that might be due to the lack of jumps shown.

Great work FDev! This was a fantastic demo. I hope we see a lot more gameplay before the 29th! Just start streaming it every week 😃

29 March confirmed! (quite short alpha i suppose then)

Cool.
I'd just have prefered boarding the ship with some stairs/ladder rather than a drop zone like an srv, but whatever.
In the old days we called them "Suicide Ladders" because we would always fall off. In Half Life Alyx they have a neat way of climbing the ladders by moving your arms.

Good to see DBOBE online. I think it looks rather good. Enjoyed the cutting and overload tools (as well as the guns) and the sound design as ever. Listening to the Gareth Jones interview now, some nice insight on the wider AI behaviour, explains pretty well the way the base security reacted.

Any opportunities for bribery?

why? what makes you think they used an old build to record a recent demo?

i don't mean what excuses one might come up to explain such a thing, i mean the real rational argument to get an old build to tease content while having something better just a compile away?
Because they said it's an old build.... (probably several different builds from before it was all stitched together, tbh, which would explain why they got left on the planet at the end).

Graphics looks great.
Animations and AI needs some more tweaking.
Really looking forward to the Alpha, and getting back into Elite.

honestly, that's even more worrying considering the alpha is expected in less than three weeks.

unless you're saying that either the footage or the specific builds are months old ... which would be really odd to release now.

that's what there is, and there's just 3 more weeks difference at most. nada.

In order for the Alpha to be released to pre-order customers, that particular build would have branched off from the main development build some time ago, to allow it to be "tidied up" for public use.

That means that what pre-order customers will get their hands on is likely to be quite far behind where the team actually are in development now, and perhaps also behind what we saw in the video.
