Odyssey trailer - thoughts?

I'm way more upbeat than the OP, but I am worried that like Horizon's planet-based missions, these scenarios will get repetitive too quickly. What I'd love to see is true PvP scenarios where one team of players is assigned to protect an outpost and another is assigned to defend it. Now that would be pretty epic and something I would not quickly get bored with.

Of course this assumes that the FPS portion doesn't mimic the spaceship portion where we have the suit equivalent of G5 godships (frag FDLs, infinite shield Cutters, etc). If that's the case, well then that kills my interest in FPS PvP - I'll just stick with Overwatch, Battlefront, Fortnite (gasp), etc.

A pure pvp or pvp instance with npc support would be interesting. To start a special mission of "defend base / attack base" at the base, there must be at least 6 people 3 attacking 3 defending to start that "special pvp mission"

How is that btw is it entirely online or is there a single player mode?
Depends what you are after. You can play online with others, or you can play offline, no internet connection required other than that for Steam.
It's a bit like Minecraft on Steroids.
You can also host your own server and play on LAN. Dedicated server is also an option, self hosted or cloud hosted.
I'm running my dedicated via Steam command on a virtual machine hosted in ESXi. Runs like a charm.

Remember not to be hyped for something we saw 8 minutes of. These frontier guys showed more cqc matches than Oddysey gameplay and to this day I can't find a cqc match. I thought we were getting an hour of Oddysey gameplay but we got breadcrumbs again. D2ea was the best reviewer imo on Oddysey because he overlooked the hype and was honest about Odyssey's flaws /inconsistencies.

again same arguments "oh you dont like the new product.. maybe dont play it" what kind of attitude is that instead of encouraging players to play and encouraging the devs not to waste time on useless gimmicks?

If there is more to do then why havent they shown it? all they have focused on is the combat so that is all we have to base our reactions on and my reaction is.. its meh, I waited years for this? I put up with them dropping CG's due to poor management? I put up with waiting for carriers for this?

It's not our responsibility to convince you to play. If you don't like it we don't want to as with you.
you forgot the DEAD part of it as well lol
Still seems to have people playing it when I play it....

DEAD as in EA killed all future development lol, that you try and dismiss that says all I need to know.

And actually, it is the Devs responsibility to convince me and others to want to play what they spent so much time, money and effort on otherwise its a waste

Oh I see. yea, I heard they stopped making new content for it. You could say the mass effect trilogy is equally dead since all of its content is finished being released already too. And to think they are re-releasing a dead game trilogy to much anticipation....

Anthems physics and gameplay mechanics are good I thought. They just screwed up badly with the content from my understanding due to poor time management and deadlines. They were pressured for a finished product now over a quality product later

Sound familiar?

Well I'm guilty of kicking frontiers behind to finish this but I don't want it rushed either. I can wait. Its not like I can stay outside more than 2 hours so I spend free time with horizons. I'll take your advice Mick. 💡i must sound fickled and I can be sometimes. ( Advice to wait for a finished product, not a beta)

I wonder why Fdev decided to put some diet rainbow six gameplay into ED at all.
There are other games that do fps much better, I bought ED because it's a spacegame with spaceships, if I wanted fps I would've bought one of the many shooters out there and gotten a better experience imho.
How many shooters are there compared to a unique spacegame like ED, personally I would've preferred Fdev to expand ED as a great spaceship game not implement a diet version of rainbow six.
Just my opinion.

OK I'll share my opinions. Thanks for asking OP!

  • For supposedly being a pre-alpha, overall I thought it looked pretty good.
  • Animations look rough in some spots; there was an npc killed on the steps inside the base, and the player quickly looked away, but the falling animation on the steps looked rough
  • The frame rate didn't seem great. There are many reasons for that I suppose. Pre-alpha so won't worry about it too much. But framerate absolutely can't be a problem on launch. Not for an FPS.
  • I liked the updated UI but maybe add some translucency particularly on the overhead compass.
  • The AI seemed OK, and we know nothing about the weapons mix, strength of shields etc, so it's hard to judge. I did see one NPC run for cover as it was being shot at, and they did swarm the players and chase them well out of the base. So I don't think it's as bad as some people make it out to be, but then again it looks like it has a long way to go. But AI is always an easy thing to pick apart.
  • SPeaking of cover, I wish there was a take cover behind object mechanic.
  • I couldn't help but look around at the base itself; the little details, textures, screens, box placement, the way the dust collected on the roads. From a just pure sort of imagination perspective I'm taken with the idea that these barren worlds that we have driven our SRVs on, with empty and basic looking outposts will now have these active bases with humans walking around on them. Having this built into the existing framework of the game rather than as some instanced alternative, I donno I just think it's quite cool and adds to the overall immersiveness and feeling of "life" in the galaxy. Yeah it's going to be repetitive on a larger scale, but still. I think it's pretty neat.
  • I liked the multiple tools required to complete the mission. This was just the smallest sample I think (hope), so am looking forward to what other things are coming from a mission perspective. I noted that the guy who did the breaking & entering said that his suit wasn't really configured for combat - so was it a stealth suit then? Or maybe a "tech" suit that allowed it to get into the systems easier? That will be fun to find out.
  • I really wish they would have found a way to do something with powerplay in Odyssey. Why not some ground based undermining missions for example? Maybe pick up a key piece of Preparation intelligence from an agent holed up at a base? Maybe an FPS combat instance for undermining to mirror what we have in space? I always find myself disappointed with each release that they aren't doing more with Powerplay, which IMO should be THE end-game activity, and as we've heard nothing PP related for Odyssey I can only assume there isn't anything significant planned. A real shame.

Uhhh no its not. where did you get that from? They have been doing the filming of it for a few weeks, so it's at least that old. They did say it's an old build too, so i'd guess an early january build, latest!
Dont forget also heavily edited to not show the bits that dont work.. like getting into your ship lol.

Now taking that assumption (just like your assumptions) and looking at how badly the animations, the AI and other parts are, and those were the good parts they left in LUL

This is a pre-alpha stuff so I will hold my main judgement for the final product. That said I will say how I felt watching the video.

Thought it looked great at the start with the ship, planet and thin atmosphere. They skipped the glide sequence and before you know it you're on the ground running. I was put off right from the start when I seen the running animation and it looked like the player was floating due to the shadow not starting from the foot( 1:13 in the video).

Don't really play first person shooters, so I felt meh watching the fire fight. The settlement looked good and I did like the feel of scale as those tiny skimmer now look a lot bigger.

I'm looking forward to seeing the scavenger, POI, exploration and the other aspects of Odyssesy.

Animation is poor. Players walking are just pure cringe! It’s uncomfortable to watch.

Yeah this is my chief complaint. Some of the animations are great, like the npc reacting to being shot and moving to cover. Walking with weapon in hands is also fine. It's just the weapon stowed run animation that looks terrible to me. Who runs like that? Also the stowed sprint animation doesn't look that urgent considering the whole base was shooting the player.

Also the way the screen moves isn't great, it's like a 2000 era type thing. I know the gameplay was played using a controller, but it still looks stiff. Even the newer versions of Skyrim have a better moving camera.

Just wanted to leave a positive on the way out:

  • Its nice how the content at new ground bases will change on bgs attributes. When frontier turned that off for space it turned bubble exploration to zero. Hopefully this will create reasons to be in more than one selected system.
  • Having name plates on npc's before you kill them was a little creepy.
  • Do you think they implemented a headshot mechanic?
  • The CM's are in another league to all the prior ones.. i can't overstate how much i appreciate the manners of Arthur and Bruce. It was finally easy to listen to a livestream as with the old Dav Stott livestreams. Please don't change this so we can continue to follow the first party content.
