Odyssey trailer - thoughts?

are you really surprised that gameplay footage looks "basic"?
It looked good to me, certainly a lot more interesting than I'd imagined it would be when they announced it.

I'm a bit of a lone explorer type, so I was worried that there wouldn't really be anything for me -- that it would be a mostly multi-player experience -- but it feels like there will be missions I can take on, and it will certainly liven up my travels within the bubble.

And it might make me a bit more combat-oriented. I think ED has made space combat about as interesting as it could ever be (if you only have average skills), whereas on-foot combat is intrinsically more interesting because you're fighting in a complex environment rather than a big empty void.

Everyone starts off the same, an even chance for everyone.

Even if we all reset saves that level field would last what .. about five minutes?

Yeah, materials. I do it by hatch-breaking (either wanted or clean ships) as a reason to carry collector limpets, drop into peaceful signal sources or interdict ships and so on. If you're exploring it's a trickier but - was operating off Gnosis megaship - did try using biological or geological sites as waypoints and flying between (2 or 300 kilometres) at 2km up, chasing POI's. Bit risky in the deep black maybe.

I want the AI to stay the same by the way. They remind me of the England front row ;)

I'll take it all.
Paging @Bottom Hat - Stuffz to be had... Get a move on, man! 😤
I hope you both like Vultures :D Lots of lovely G5 maxed out Vultures...Frag Vultures, Rail Vultures, Plasma Vultures, MC Vultures, MC/Beam Vultures, Missile Vultures, Phasing Vultures, Pacifier Vultures...if you love Vultures my stuff is the best! :D (Disclaimer: there are also a few Kraits, Chiefs, Corvettes, Pythons and other ships, but I don't like admitting to them normally)
If you are in the alpha and would like a playmate to look for the shiny bits in the sand...
I am and I will be! Who doesn't want to search for shiny shiny in the sand?! Apart from people who play dedicated shiny shiny sandy search games of course :D
Add me if you want, same name as on the forums

.... are you really surprised that gameplay footage looks "basic"?
Actually yes.

Because of these reasons:-
1. The spaceship, planets, stations and SRV stuff FDev creates all look really good. In fact visually, the rest of the game is superb!
And 2. There are other FPSs out there that look so much better than what I’ve seen here.

So the fact FDev’s FPS does look so basic (my god that running...good lord!) is surprising and a big disappointment.

Bolted on? .. Or integrated? (Integrated)
I think that’s a good distinction, and one that I don’t think will be an issue - I believe FDev will integrate legs in with the whole game quite well

It’s just a shame it looks so... meh

And yet you still miss my point. Frontier have not done a game where you as a person, can run around. This is as much a first for them as space ships in PUBG would be for them.

And that's another reason to be worried about, don't you think?

Imagine if PUBG tried adding space ships to the game.
They've never done a space ship game before. Don't you think the space ship side of it would be very basic and look meh?

Now imagine a game that for its entire history has never had people being able to leave the ship and run around .... AND .... it being a new aspect that the developers have never done before (The Outsider does not count, it was scrapped before being published) .... are you really surprised that gameplay footage looks "basic"?

And how do you know that all of the 100 people working exclusively for Elite Dangerous never did first person?
AND the ship gameplay in Elite leaves a lot to be desired, it still barebones after 6 years.

No, I don’t miss your point, I just disagree that that’s a valid reason for producing the low quality on display here

At least in only three weeks all of the alpha players will be able to post accurate assessments of the alpha game being played... I fully expect some negativity from those who never wanted any additional combat in the game regardless of the actual quality of the expansion at the time, of course.

Yes of course, some people will not be happy, no matter what.
And some will be happy, no matter what.

The (difficult) trick for FDev is weening these two groups out and listening to genuine feedback from those open to both sides

I don't know. But I would be surprised if Frontier didn't hire at least some devs who had experience with first person shooters or gameplay.

What I said was FRONTIER have not done first person before, not that the devs themselves haven't done it.

The reason I have become fed up of the negative criticism is mainly because all we've had to go on is what Frontier have shown us, which is admittedly, not much. It's like saying you don't like curry when you've never had curry before. Anyone's opinion of the alpha gameplay footage is pretty much moot until they have played it for themselves.

Most of all, and I've said this before to the community, stop having expectations of what Elite Dangerous should be. You will only end up being disappointed.

This is, in my opinion, an accurate assessment - nicely said!
I'll be happy regardless (I don't mind admitting) as there is new content being added beside the pew-pew footy stuff - not that I mind that in the least - that will engage me much more often than planetary missions. So, in truth, I'm able to celebrate both sides of the coin, I am a mad explorer type and the planetary changes promised look particularly attractive so far, and I (shamefully) quite enjoy Bounty Hunting pirates and blowing up civilian ships for materials - and Odyssey is bringing us a new batch of engineers to befriend.

I do see the lack of appeal to anyone who is focused purely on combat or non-combat activities, but from the information already given us the latter group are catered for - the FPS enthusiasts are highly unlikely to be impressed with anything Frontier can weave into the game (in my opinion) as dedicated games do it so much better.

But, I have considered, for the "Average Joe", the FPS we have seen will at least provide some amusement, even if only for a short while.

Of course it will... Going by some comments posted with monotonous regularity on this forum a bunch of interns could produce better code anyway...
This is why I think they should start with basic space legs, figure out the mechanics (simple walking on the surface of the planets, animation of the body), create the proper engine - and then move into more complex things like FPS. I don't want to repeat myself over and over again, but FDev might had bitten more than they can chew and we all will pay for it with years of fixing bugs and issues of the game aspect many of us didn't even ask for, leaving other aspects we actually did ask for untouched and/or unfixed.

Indeed, had the decision to produce more mundane content been made, what, 3 years ago, when we were informed that the expansion was going into production, then that is what we would be receiving today. Instead the decision was to create a continuation of the activities we currently have, but moved to surface, first-person persective.

My guess is that the mix of content being offered in Odyssey has been considered as the most likely to bring in additional revenue, as the developers who have been working on the update will have been paid over those years and additional revenue will assist in 'balancing the books'.
