Man I really wish Palin was 5k LY TOTAL in jumps, not 5k from wherever I started years ago

For some reason this exchange has led me down the path of thinking about drug mules, "carry this through customer for me".

This took me on to this line of thinking:

If I was a meanie, I could fill my carrier with stolen goods. I could then encourage new players to buy these stolen goods, telling them they will make vast profits by selling them at that station over there. They buy the goods from me (ker-ching) and there is the very real risk that they get scanned by the station and into all sorts of trouble.

A sort of Wall Street Ganking.

If you are in a squadron and someone with a Fleet Carrier will jump for you +-5000ly, you only have to fly/jump to a nearby system and back to the Fleet Carrier. You will have now +5000ly requirement unlocked ;-)

For rare goods, like Painite or Modular Terminals I can forward you to East India Company Trading Post

Have fun

So stupidly annoying, I enjoyed my sojourn out into guardian space for the fighters but I had a REASON to go out there, meanwhile if I want my g5 thrusters I just HAVE to jump 10k damn lightyears for him, such a stupid unlock requirement. Whoever thought that up is obviously a sadist, no way to hide that obvious fact.

these days you can take a bus FC to colonia and suicidewinder yourself back, saving yourself the hassle of actually "travelling" anywhere. Check out the FC Discord, or ask around on the elite dangerous discord, as there are at least 2 runs to colonia and back each month this arbitrary figure can be achieved while your AFK playing something else.

if only it were that easy to obtain Small Seismic Charges I would be a happy man!

such grand gameplay
I love conversations like this.

FDev makes up an in-game reason for Palin's requirement. Sure it's arbitrary but so is every quest in every game you've ever played. When the wizard in SuperFunFantasyQuest IV tells you bring him a shrubbery, it's arbitrary make-work. That's just how video games are.

...so you complain that you don't want to go 10,000 light years. It's like complaining that you don't want to bring the wizard a shrubbery. Okay, that's fine. You're entitled to your opinion.

Then someone helpfully suggests a shortcut. You don't have to go 10,000 light years. You don't have to search for a shrubbery. Here's a quicker way.

And you have the audacity to reframe this as a criticism of the game in general. It's amazing. Just do the quest as presented to you! Or don't, nobody caress. But when someone offers you a faster workaround, don't pretend that's a failure of the game itself.

Three comments:
Firstly the Englineer unlock requirements will encourage a player to engage and gain a basic proficiency in aspects of the game that they may not previously have tried. I think of it as a sort of in-game training, or at least a framework for self-study. Sure you may not 'click' with some game roles, but similarly, somewhere aong the enginner unlocks path, you might be put in contact with something that you like.

Secondly (and I say this for long term engagement in the game) The game is a mile wide and an inch deep for those who accelerate progress/wealth gathering. If you skim a stone across the surface or the lake of ED, your stone will end up on the other side, and you'll think "What now??" (having totally missed the content and varied gameplay in the depths of the lake). Alternatively (or possibly in addition), you'll be at what is intended to be an advanced position in game, without the experience/knowledge to play effectively at that level.

For sure some of the game loops will not be a particular players cup of tea, but doing it just the once will teach that player more about the game. For example, My two main commanders play as "Lawful/good". I really hated having to unlock The Dweller (deal in 5 black markets), and had to work hard to find the least out of character methods to comply (as it's only a game, and the prize is behind an artificial gate, as well as there being a game mechanic to learn).

This right here.

I have my complaints about the game too. Lots of them. And I too hated some of the engineer grind (for some reason, I hated Sirius but now I don't even remember why).

But most of the times I've gotten burned out are when I'm trying to do something "META" as in, a youtube video told me that I should do this one particular thing over and over and ignore everything else. It's my own fault for doing that!

I've never felt burned out when I'm casually supporting a minor faction and taking an interest in them. It's "play" in the truest sense - the way a kid plays with a truck in a sandbox. It's using my imagination, and it's fun.

The problem here i think is like iwith a number of things in the game is the pointlessness of it. You could sell it with any number of flavor text missions and make it at least somewhat better. ā€œI need something from such and such nebulaā€. Some scan or type of thing (extra points if unique or interesting) he needs that drives the 5000ly mission. Sure some will still gripe because they just want to press ā€œunlockā€ and go but i think more people would enjoy that.

Ram Tah was at least a bit interesting to do for me. Much more engaging than the other fetch missions.

But like dataminned wake exceptions this is just a pointless ā€œpress the button over and over till i say stopā€ thing. Its at least a hair better than wake scanning since you can pick an interesting destination and go and get it unlocked as part of a useful process. Go see something you wouldn’t otherwise. Haul a passenger and make a few million as well.

Ive got 5000 hours in so I obviously still like it but God some creativity could go a long way in these things.

Why is it a problem? You have to do something in the game to get some shiny rewards... like you do in every game ever.

Do it in the right kind of ship. Build one with good jump range and a passenger cabin and DSS. Pick up a passenger who wants to go a bit over 5kly and "collect data". Surface scan all the water, ammonia and earth-like worlds along the way. Profit!
