How would y'all feel about cobra Mk.IV for PS Odyssey pre-orders?

In the words of the late 80's alternative rock band (at least that's how wikipedia describes them) Transvision Vamp "Baby, I don't care"

As a PS4 owner, I disagree with releasing the Cobra Mk. IV.

That might be surprising, but it has little to do with my own wants (I do want the ship, for the sake of owning it).

Lifetime Passes and 'Launch Support' packages depend on exclusivity. Many developers fail to stick to their guns on these, and the numbers show their losses when compared to those that do keep that exclusivity in check. Sony, ironically, is the biggest bogeyman of exclusivity to the point the majority of media outlets in the gaming world rant and rave about it constantly.

Yet they haven't stopped, have they? Given how Bafta's just went...exclusivity is a big win for the business. It pays to stick to it.
Because your consumer knows that exclusivity is going to last, and with it the pride/entertainment/right to it.

If FDev rolled out Cobra IV for everyone else, most consumers would know to never invest in launch/LEP material for future titles. Instead, because of this particular ship - and other perks that LEPs are now experiencing with EDO - the future value of such commitments is only going to rise. Some day, there will be a new Elite game (by virtue of how cycles work) and that new game will have the opportunity for ground floor financial commitment.

There may be some loss because of how long LEP and such took to pay out, but those losses will be covered and exceeded by new and old players alike - thanks to the decision to 'stick to it', even years later.

Could FDev reverse course? Of course, and they may yet. But every day they don't increases the value of exclusivity in their franchise. It's a proverbial golden-egg goose that anyone with a lick of business sense knows to not kill, critics and nay-sayers be damned.

Didn't pre order horizons, ergo have no access to CMkIV. Don't give a monkeys who has access to it, probably wouldn't buy one if I did, and certainly wouldn't want to prevent those poor deranged individuals who do want one from fulfilling their CMkIV shaped desires. On the other hand FDev did say it would be an exclusive, so it should probably stay that way.

At this point I think there‘s more chance they’ll add a new PS Trophy for owning all ships in the game than let PS players buy a Cobra MkIV ....

Let me start by saying that I have no oar in that boat, I'm a PC gamer, with cobra Mk.IV access, and I have no intention of moving to PS4/5, so it's not that I'm trying to envigo my way into Cobra Mk.IV access by creating a loophole through which I'd benefit. It's just that on PC we got the Cobra Mk.IV access as a reward for preordering horizons, on XB1 tehy got Cobra Mk.IV access for preordering the game, actually ordering it within a window after the launch date on that platform, yet Playstation CMDR's have NEVER been able to get a Cobra Mk.IV. While the Cobra Mk.IV isn't the gosh darned bestest ship in t'entire galaxy, infact it's a few "kylies" (thousands of lightyears) from it IMHO, it's NOT FAIR that an entire platform hasn't been able to access it. So, that brings me to the question, who would y'all feel if the Cobra Mk.IV was made available as an Odyssey pre-order reward, possibly alongside the pioneer suit skin, for PS CMDR's? I'd be cool with it, I'd like to hear your thoughts on this as an idea?
Saddened that FDev gave in.

PS4 owners couldn't get it because the offer had closed before the game port to PS4 was finished so they couldn't qualify anymore than I could as I bought the game after Horizons.

How about giving early backers of ED with Cobra Mk IV's the exclusive right to sell Cobra Mk IV's from their Fleet Carriers? This way, early backers are entitled to a privilege the rest of us aren't and everyone has access to the Cobra Mk IV, so long as we're willing and able to pay whatever early backers will be asking for Cobra Mk IV's.

Here is a thought...

The Cobra Mk IV (C4) was part of a contract, not a promise, but a contract. The exclusivity of the C4 is part of Frontier's legal existence, meaning that it MUST influence all future contracts that Frontier forges. Since the content (Horizons) that the contract was founded on is still extant as part of the game, the contract is still extant.

If the content were completely removed from game, the contract could (possibly) be invalidated. Otherwise, whether Frontier wants to release the C4 or not, it risks class action lawsuits in any country that has players with rights to the C4.

It is not a matter of honor or reputation, it is a matter of legal obligation.

I wouldn't care. Being a PC player without a Cobra Mk IV, I still don't/wouldn't feel upset at all if they were given to people for misc. reasons.

Some days, I am bally well sure that I am living in a simulation and the whole bally programme is repeating itself, what what

Another fine analogy would be pushing the boulder up the hill, what what

It's about time that this sort of thread re-appeared, in order to flag to Frontier that it is still a subject that exorcises some people.

I am a PS commander who believes that more than FIVE years after the Cobra MkIV was removed for general availability it should be made available to all again (I am happy if Frontier want to tie it to purchase of the DLC).
In the past five years, you have to consider what percentage of the player base has churned?

I understand the original logic of making it an incentive to purchase of Horizons if that same logic was then applied to Beyond - but it wasn't. Even the Beyond developments are now complete and we are moving into Odyssey phase.

Every new commander is currently:
- prevented from owning the Cobra MkIV.
and therefore
- not seeing any Cobra MkIV ship skins in the store

If Frontier are worried about the 'uproar' from the playerbase that purchased the Horizon DLC originally, I wouldn't object them to being issued with the same Gold Sidewinder ship skin with Playstation Commanders received when they pre-ordered Frontier (and Horizons) prior to its launch on the Playstation.
It wasn’t generally available at any time, and Beyond unlike Horizons or Odyssey wasn’t something we had to order or buy.

Beep Boop ... Exclusive

Beep Boop ... Forever

Boop Beep ...

Apologies for the automated response.

I'm always amazed that the possibility that FDev, just wanted to give the people that supported them at particular point in time, an exclusive gift, never to be given away again, as a thank you for supporting them, is disregarded, out of hand, the instant they realise they missed out.

Yes I realise it was also a Horizons marketing thing as well... or was it? No one made them use the words "Exclusive" and "Forever" together like that. FDev did that them selves. They also described it as a gift, not a reward. What could it all mean?

Well it always sucks to miss out, either because you didn't know about it or because it wasn't even an option at the time on your platform of choice.

Cobra IV... No opinion. It's neither here nor there for me. I probably wouldn't get one even if it was available. It's now as outdated as the bonus starter ship you got in No Man's Sky early on.

just reminds me of the Primae in EVE - given as a gift when planetary interaction launched - it is good for nothing now, just a collector's item.

I have a very simple yet beautifully poetic solution to the whole Bally affair, what what

If you have a Cobra mk IV and you believe others should have the opportunity, FDev could implement the following mechanic....

You give up your right to access the vessel in any way shape or form and offer it to a Cmdr who wants it, Bally simple and yet tragically brilliant.
