Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Yup...it's there in my Steam DLC list for ED but the launcher isn't updating. Probably a Steam account link issue at FDevs end.
have you tryed to log out and relog in the launcher?
On reddit they say with the steam version you have to do this to make the option available.
ok, never mind.

That sorted it...thanks mate... It only took me 400 attempts to remember what my Frontier login and password was once I'd logged out :)

Looks like I'll be playing it sometime this week, 10hours to go...I hate downloading from FDev servers via the launcher, slow as a tax rebate :cautious:
Took about 2 hours to install for me this morning. I guess lots of people were struggling with Steam.

3 months of heavy grinding for a $600(?) ship.

What do people think? Where does this fit on the line of "so easy to get it will outrage whales" to "enough of a grind to make it pay to win" scale?
Difficult to say, since "three months of heavy grinding" is rather vague and subjective.

First we have the term "grinding." What is their definition of grinding?

Mine is traditional: repeating the same extremely limited pool of actions, because there is no other option for you. One example would be killing the exact same monster over and over again to advance the game, because you need a few more levels to move on to the next area of the game, and all other monsters don't give XP, because they're now too easy... and that same monster is almost too easy to begin with.

Some people define grinding as doing activities they don't enjoy, because the rewards are higher than the activities they do enjoy.

Some people even define grinding as playing a long while.

Second, we have the modifier "heavy." Most likely, the modifier "heavy" refers to the total amount of time spent acquiring this Carrack, but it may refer to the proportion of time spent doing "boring" activities to "fun" activities. Either way, it's safe to assume that that a lot of time was involved in this case. ;)

Third, what was their starting point? Did they start with the basic ship that comes with the game, or did they have a leg up by buying a few of the cheaper ships? The ED equivalent of a Sidewinder to an Anaconda is very different from the equivalent of a Python to an Anaconda... especially since ships can't be repurposed to fill other roles (you need a dedicated miner to mine, for example.)

Finally, we have the even more nebulous "three months." It would've been more informative if they had described the amount of hours they put into this, since that's fixed. The average gamer plays a game for five hours a week. That would be about 60 hours. Were they putting in 4 hours a day? That would be around 360 hours. Equivalent of a full time job? nearly 500 hours. As much time as they could possibly get, and still hold a full time job? 800 hours.

I'm inclined to go with the latter half of that range... which makes it very much pay to win in my book. YMMV

The thing is, there is no way CIG do not want to steer people towards their cash shop. It is the whole point of having it.
All these games that offer an in-game option as well as a cash shop option always make it a slog to obtain in game. Any fan trying to say it needs balancing or won't be too bad only has to look at other examples, there are plenty of them out there.

The above Carrack example is also based on the fact that the guy knew quicker ways to get UEC. The newbie is not going to know, they're guaranteed to lose ships along the way further setting back their funds and time.

When you know how to grind, you can get easily 100k / hour.
A Carrack is 27 mil = around 270 hours = 3h/day every day = 3 months.

But he made the Xenothreat event which could get you around 500k / hour easy. Must be less than 3h/day of playtime.
And what happens when someone pew pews grinded ship to pieces? I mean in ED ships are insured (minus smallish co-pay), and in SC ships bought with real money are likewise, but what about ships bought with in-game money?
