ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Good to know, thanks. :) When my Rift was on it's way, I read about this method and ordered a couple of cheap Note 3 protectors. I haven't had the courage to try it. From what you're saying, it's not worth the risk.

Please do. :)

Ohhh kayyy, I won't be trying that one. :D

You can buy a 20" diffuser from Jessops. £15. You'd have to take a knife to it to cut it to size and then stick it on somehow...

Unfortunately that's the wrong kind of diffuser. The one we need is a gel diffuser and it needs a very specific opacity.

Did you unistall the old tracking driver before installing?

What I don't get with direct mode, why does it have be cloned? Wasn't that mode supposed to only use the rift?

How are folks getting direct mode working?

Don't seem to have that option with the latest runtime, and isn't detected in E:D

Hi All,

Received my DK2 yesterday and got it up and running with ED. Thanks everyone for all the tips and tricks. A couple of questions:

1. I appear to be not entirely correctly imbedded in the pilot avatar, anyway to change that?
2. I notice that my holograms move from a bright, rich, orange color, similar to what you see playing without the rift, to a washed out orange color. Seems to depend on perhaps my orientation...not entirely sure. Anyone else experience this, and again any tricks for getting rid of it?

The feeling of being inside your spaceship is really striking, can't wait to see what the future holds!

Cheers!

Figured it out :)

So - I've supersampled and have most of the text fairly legible now, but in direct mode, I keep getting pauses in rendering, and then it will catch up again, the pauses can be for a second or two. Not had it in combat yet, but certainly in supercruise. I don't get this in Extended mode. Another observation about Direct mode, is that I keep getting noticeable seperation of GUI objects, when in periphery vision.

That said... I LOVE the radar/heat scanner on the rift, much easier to tell where things are compared to monitor

That is TOO weird! A couple of hours ago I was reading these forums and I asked a random question about direct mode thinking I would look stupid (as usual). If I was reading this from someone else I would not believe it - feel free to flame me :p

I know, couldn't believe mu luck :) just need to get stuttering sorted, locked at 25 fps at the moment but it still looks great :D

The CPU'S aren't being taxed

So you're thinking : "Oh, then if my CPU sticks to below 100% usage it doesnt matter how fast it is" - if only things in life were so simple.

Or maybe it's my god awful AMD 8350 Black Edition O/C to 5 ghz on all 8 cores.

Now you're getting it. Somehow with my lousy 7970 and a 5820k at 4.5, I manage to play just fine on med-high ..

Please explain (in detail) why you think AMD CPUs are in any way deficient for E: D compared to Intel ones? My AMD twin 7870s and 3.5Ghz AMD CPU runs E: D fine in the Rift. Others with AMD are also getting similarly good results. You should shut up and not try to turn this helpful thread into a pointless AMD vs Intel war. Both chips are good enough for VR if they are fast enough.

Giving you a complete answer may well take in my evening, so I'll instead point you at google and tell you to look upintel 22nm architecture, optimzed instruction set and cache bridges, and fp64 operation throughput.

I'm willing to bet you can't.

My job is a software developer (3d games). I'm paid to analyze how different O notations scale to different architectures. Poly sorting is one of those.
I gotta now these things.

I dont wanna start a cpu war, but the fact remains that a lot of people with crazy cards here complain of bad framerate and more often than once it's due to the cpu.

Care to share with the rest of the class? I can't get it working in direct mode either.

+1

Pretty please. I am a bit tired of my card/PC deciding to assign arbitrary monitor number ID to my 2 screens AND my occulus thereby screweing with my desktop arrangements and icons... Direct mode would be really great.

I did ask earlier, but is it worth upgrading my quad core i5 3.2ghz if I'm running a Titan Z and 32GB RAM?

No, if it's a good i5 and you overclock it to 4.2+. Then you wait for cv and upgrade then. Prices and choices will be better. Not to mention that ridiculously expensive ddr4 should go down pricewise ..
Yes if it's one of those dual core things.

my fps is locked at exactly 37.5. Again given that's exactly half of what I would expect which makes me suspicious.

I have the same issue.
When I first tried it I was getting less than 1 fps
Restarted everything and tried again and I'm getting 37.5 fps.
Weird as it's exactly half of 75fps. Like it's splitting the FPS between the monitor and DK2 or something.

I've posted this issue on the Reddit thread about 0.4.3 where there's a lot of Oculus peeps posting, someone might suggest a solution.

That makes me feel a bit better, means I'm probably not doing something really stupid ;). Sounds like Hadron42 has similar low fps.

On the plus side in the early hours I retested extended mode with the new runtime and that still worked great (75 fps) for me, so nothing lost.

Morning Juniper,

What's happening for you in direct mode? Do you get nothing at all or stuck with low fps?

M

*LOL what the hell is 'auto merge' (above)

To those with lowerfps out of curiosity have you tried disabling vsync? I know technically its a no no, but its helped me hugely in (the amazing) assetto corsa

Nice GPU! Generally at the moment for gaming so long as it is a K series an i5 is fine. Maybe going forward this may change but for now save your cash. That being said.... So long as it IS a k series running at 3.2 is bordering on criminal. With even a half decent cooler it should do 4ghz and depending on exact model will do anything up to 4.7 .... My i5 2500k does 4.35ghz on a 15quid aftermarket cooler

I thought I had ....... but it was the early hours so will retest.

Someone on reddit did post "It's because of double buffering with v-sync. If your machine takes more than 13.3 ms to render a frame it'll display the previous one and you'll get 75 /2 = 37.5 FPS.". I must admit to not knowing much about vsync but sounds plausible?

Maybe is better I just ask......
...where can I find the setting to have the capture screen without the stereoscopic view. The search engine in this forum is worse than the one in the Galaxy Map :-(

Tahnk you
