ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Thanks, I will try that. A thread where this was discussed, in case of troubleshooting I don't have to fill up the topic with personal OT stuff.
Thank you again

Morning Juniper,

What's happening for you in direct mode? Do you get nothing at all or stuck with low fps?

Morning!

In answer to your question: nothing at all.

I put my Rift into direct mode, launch the game, and the game just doesn't see the Rift at all. I've tried setting the 3D mode to be Oculus Speakers or Oculus Headphones, and all that happens is I get a stereoscopic view on my main monitor. Weirdly though, head tracking works. :S

*LOL what the hell is 'auto merge' (above)

New forum 'feature' I'm guessing. They keep surfacing and surprising us... ;)

The only difference between speakers and headphones settings is the fact that using headphones, the game will need to rotate the soundscape to match the head position, whereas that isn't necessary when using speakers for obvious reasons.

It doesn't change anything about the rendering - getting different results may have been coincidence.

Hey Juniper,

I had missed the firmware update of the headset, and once that was done, and I rebooted, I gave it a go in direct mode. Like you, I got the stereoscopic on the main monitor, but this time it also showed on the headset too. I'm a little disillusioned with the performance versus extended mode though, but that might be because the monitor is capped at 60hz, which also seems to cap the rift to the same in game. The other big issue is the 2 second stutter I get in direct mode, which I don't get in extended at all. Interestingly, headtracking keeps working in the middle of the stutter, which is a little weird.

I've set up super sampling (2560x1440 scaled down to 1920x1080) for monitor and rift independently when in extended mode, which seems to carry over to direct, as the text is quite readable, if only I had a way of reducing the grid effect that the lenses exacerbate, but I'll cope for now.

Displaying on monitor and DK2?

About a week ago I remember seeing something in the forum about an unsupported but available way to get a normal image of the game on the monitor and still playing a 3d version on the rift. My rift arrived a few days ago and ED is freaking amazing on it. However, I can't stand trying to look up system information and trying to figure out trade routes while using the DK2, and I want to demo it to some friends. I'd like to be able to mirror a normal gameplay image on the monitor, anyon have a link on how to do that? I've tried looking for it on the forum but with the recent changes I can't find it.

I thought I had ....... but it was the early hours so will retest.

Someone on reddit did post "It's because of double buffering with v-sync. If your machine takes more than 13.3 ms to render a frame it'll display the previous one and you'll get 75 /2 = 37.5 FPS.". I must admit to not knowing much about vsync but sounds plausible?

Changing the in game Vsync option on or off doesn't correct the issue.

How are you guys getting 4.3 to work? I lost tracking. Uninstalling the old driver was mentioned but I have no idea how to find it.

Have you tried forcing it off in Nvidia inspector? Don't remember if the original ED 344.48 profile was forced on/off or app-controlled, as I forced it to adaptive on (was standard).

I'd try, but since the current version of ED isn't made for the new SDK and after reading experiences, I'll hold off with upgrading until most programs have been updated.

[edit]: @sfaxo - check this thread.

Geez we really need a ED VR section to this forum. Badly. I asked Micheal and he said he forwarded it to the community manager but, that seems to have gone nowhere. This is probably the largest thread on the forum and certainly bigger and more active than some sections already in their own area.

Maybe if more people ask?

Sorry mate, it doesn't help but I just installed the runtime (didn't uninstall or change anything else) and after a full reboot it just worked. Set the rift mode to direct (yellow light), started ED launcher, play, blue light comes on, stereoscopic view of loading screen on my main monitor and VR view in rift with head tracking.

I'm guessing the blue light never shows on yours?

Same here. I also forced off Vsync in Nvidia inspector & Nvidia control panel. I am beginning to run out of ideas.

Has anyone on this forum confirmed they have ED working in direct mode with an FPS counter and getting over 37.5 fps? Just wandering if at this time it's even possible?

I have just tried direct mode and I agree with all your comments above. The stutter makes it unplayable. Tired having the monitors not extended in windows etc I can change my TV to 75Hz but it lowers the res. and I don't want that.

Slight deviation from the current discussion but is it possible for Frontier to make a demo of Elite for the OC to join all the other demo's on the Oculus site? It would show off both OC and Elite and would be good for anyone with access to an OC to experience Elite without having to learn any skills and it might even sell a few more copies! Just a thought.

Hm, interesting... ED was my first Software beside the Demo in den DK2 Config that works with Direct to Rift. *g* But I have that 60Hz without Low Persistence too, so its useless when the my primary TFT Monitor must run at 75Hz. Normally Direct to Rift run with 75Hz completely unattached from the Monitor Frequency. Could be that Frontier must compile ED with SDK 0.4.3 to work correct. Seams other DK2 Software needs that too.

Figured it out :)

So - I've supersampled and have most of the text fairly legible now, but in direct mode, I keep getting pauses in rendering, and then it will catch up again, the pauses can be for a second or two. Not had it in combat yet, but certainly in supercruise. I don't get this in Extended mode. Another observation about Direct mode, is that I keep getting noticeable seperation of GUI objects, when in periphery vision.

That said... I LOVE the radar/heat scanner on the rift, much easier to tell where things are compared to monitor

Sounds like you're having the same issues as me in direct. I also get a "blurring" on head movement - I guess this is low persistence not working properly. The stuttering is annoying, not continuous but 1 or 2 second freezes every so often. Going to switch back to extended mode (which works perfectly even on medium-high) until the creases are ironed out. :)

When beta 2 was first released, I was able to run E: D in direct mode - the first time I launched it. I had all the issues you describe, and ticketed them. It never worked again.

Then I was directed to the post by the devs that said you had to use 'extended' mode.

My guess is that nothing has actually changed here, and E: D just doesn't implement direct mode. Certainly nowhere near ready for prime time.

Might change Tuesday of course...

Indeed, we may also see a firmware update from Oculus in the near future. It'd be great to play in direct - if only so the people looking at my monitor can see what I'm doing...My nephew and niece recently saw me wearing my OR while playing ED, looked at the desktop on my monitor and decided I was deranged...;)

I let them have a go just to prove my sanity (not sure it worked but they loved ED and the Rift :D).
