Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I have to ask... how did you get your suit power and oxygen to last that long?

I just brought a couple energy cells with me, they last quite a while if you're not jumping much. I also had some loaded into the Apex inventory, so if I needed them I could've called the taxi to me and got them off it. But I didn't need to. I went through 2 energy cells and still had one left.

Saved 3 billion. How much before its safe to buy a FC? 6? 8?

I just want an FC to go to Sag A , Colonia and Rackham's Peak. Just dont like the idea of hitching a ride (control freak).
Well, apart from the intial 5bn, you'll want modules. At they very least refual, repair, rearm. But I couldn't do without carto so there's that. That's a goodly amount and needs a weekly upkeep of around 12mCR depending on how much travelling you do. I'd say, consertively, 6bn at least. (If you wanted everything: add shipyard and outfitting @ 250,000,000 each plus redemption office @ 150,000,000 and secure warehouse @ 165,000,000).

Then there's the "never fly without rebuy" mantra which equates to three times the cost of your ship so... 16/17bnCR? *

* This is, of course, not true :D

ETA - on FCs, ATC Blaine sounds like a pilot from a Boeing 737 taking you to Palma airport)

whaaaaa?????
how does that work, they fly off with your stuff and you request the same cabbie to come back or is ther a bit of hand wavium going on?
It's dumb from an immersion perspective. But it makes sense from a programming perspective, since they could just add the new inventory to the existing inventory UI which is already in your ship. Since we don't have any personal ship atm, the Taxi service does it.

It's unwieldy, though. You can't move stuff around unless the taxi is present (you can stand under it and manage inventory from there, though).

And it's very unclear what is in your backpack at times. The UI is just terrible.

But at least there is an inventory, lol.

Oh nos... has they introduced inv juggling? Next, there'll be weight restrictions like 1lb per credit. Er... :D

I tried Odyssey for about 30 minutes on Monday. The framerate was pretty trash on ultra, and some of the textures were quite bad too (others were quite nice). I took a mission to kill some scavengers and ended up getting my first soul rebuy.

I like what they're doing but I think I'll let the kids playtest this one. Particularly as it's a phased roll out. I'm quite happy to learn from some of the the Youtube vids appearing in my subs or from what I see around here. It's an optional aspect of Elite gameplay you can dip in and out at your leisure. No rush.

Back in Horizon, the Pandorum fleet carrier dropped me off within about 8Ly of my old home system of Wolf 349, so that was nice. I got my power distributor fully maxxed out by Marcus Qwent and the power plant is one grade away from being done. I then headed to Deciat where, of course, I was ganked..

It was tense.

Purple blobs flying past my canopy, left and right.

I boosted with my engines on full pips while thinking 'Either this guy is a bad shot or I'm a good flyer.'

Personally, I think it's the latter.

Another armed pilot appears on my radar. Friend or ally? I don't wait to find out.

I continue dodging purple blobs, swerving this way or that, before my enemy disappears from the radar screen.

Reboot and AFMU brings my thrusters up from 14 to 45% whereupon I enter Garay Terminal and mock my tormentor mercilessly in the chat.

But anyway, after that I went to Farseer and got the FSD fully upgraded to G4 and only have G5 next. This is the first time I've been able to make jumps at 30+ light years. (y) It's kinda weird having made that trip to Colonia and now being able to move around in the bubble very quickly.

If anyone needs me, I'm just at Cubeo completing some mission board spamming I started yesterday. I don't wanna log in at the weekend see a bunch of failed missions.

I'm out in some nebula out in the Temple area. I left the Bubble with an empty carrier (full tank of gas). By my normal methods, I still have the full tank of gas and around 1200ton of Trit. I could just make a dash for Colonia, I won't, I'll take a slow dwindling route, may head further out toward the rim.

It's incredible really, every week I make at least 5 times the amount of money I need to pay the upkeep, I regularly max out my free ARX by a Monday. Just gently floating around, scanning and mining, filling my CODEX entries. I love this drifting. It is precisely how I would like to live in real life.
I thought you did.
Well the download was typically slow.

And I might need a better computer rather than my laptop, I have dropped to medium on the graphics settings and the framerate was still slow even by crystal shards site standards.
The optimisation is just really bad, I think.

Why oh why won't they let me play tunes on desktop while completing some missions. You're literally breaking my heart right now, fdev.

Of all the things you should've focused your attention on, this should've been it.

EDIT: I mean, you can. Just not using bluetooth for whatever reason.

By the way, does anyone know a good speaker setup for PC around the £50ish or above range. I bought a cheaper set when my default Dell speakers broke (they were awesome by the way) but they are quite bad.

Oh, apparently I failed ALL the missions. I was sure I had time but there goes my rep with about 18 different factions.

I don't even care anyway. I'll just start again.

And thank you, computer, for that blue screen of death while I was in mid-sentence.

Or above? JBL professional 1 series 104. Without Bluetooth, if you can find them (cheaper that way). No match for real speakers, both in sound and volume, but good enough at that size. Good reviews. You can get better at that size, but things tend to become really expensive really fast.

Oof. At a hundred quid, I'd need to be a teensy bit confident in their performance.

No bluetooth is good for me. I only require that for headphones. 3.5mm sockets seem to die very quickly. At least with desktops.

Maybe?

As usual with speakers, you should listen to them before you buy. Unless the UK(?) changed the return policies after brexit, that shouldn't be a problem with mail order.
I hate returning stuff. I'd rather just throw it in the bin. So much hassle.

But yes, we are still the UK. Not sure what that question mark was for. ;-)
And it's full of debugging code too, I'm sure. They're logging everything, and it slows things down a lot. It'll improve, at some point :)
No doubt. I love what they're doing even it's not the type of gameplay I'm looking for.

Balance is key. It will attract new players but always remember what Elite is about. It's a ship-based sim.

And I do love the fact that tiny little people might be doing stuff on a planet I'm flying past.

Maybe?

Looks nice. I'd order it now but I just noticed you made and edit so I'll have to check that link.

You could spoil yourself and get a THX certified 5.1 surround system like the one I use:

.. but it costs nearly £300 - I love it, it preforms remarkably well.
