ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey PC Launch Date

Can you please make sure that GeForce Now has access to full Odyssey? Don't want to be stuck in Horizons despite having paid for Odyssey, and the Alpha has never run in GFN...

It seems to be a rather huge disconnect between the "this is not ready for another year" side and FDEV launching their DLC on the 19th.

It'll be interesting to see how this will play out. Maybe FDEV will surprise us and bring out the good version that no one played in this alpha?

Hope dies last?

Great news! That date sounds perfect for launch. Frontier has been able to work on the game's stability and make the initial tweaks they needed to based on feedback; after launch, they can focus on balance patches and content updates, as they said (I'm especially excited for the content updates :) ). The time between April 30th and May 19th is more than enough for the most important remaining task: optimization. At any rate, I'm relieved we finally have a launch date. Not too long now!

With the delivery date being much closer than anticipated, perhaps we have been playing a much older version of the game for bug-busting and net-code testing?
I'll laugh my socks off if the released version is all of the fun in alpha and the performance of Horizons... There would surely be some 🧂 to harvest from a few names...
Yes :D , although I'm not sure its really much closer than anticipated, maybe a week?

I'm always optimistic. It's what I'm known for :sneaky:

So after a few small steps, here comes the giant leap. 😁

Interesting that this is announced before phase 4 has begun, let alone with no mention of an official Beta phase. That said, I never thought the original game would warrant a full release back in December 2014 given the progress at the time (and my stability findings on that one fateful journey), but released it was.

Sometimes, when you gotta go, you gotta boldly go. 😜

I extend my heartfelt empathy to the coders who are going to suffer from the "crunch" between now and release day. I don't blame them, if anything I advocate for them, because this industry has a way of burning out coders with ridiculous release schedules. I'm sure this release date is all about fiscal years and finances and stockholders and "money, money, money" over quality. I know, I'm being a real Debbie Downer, but I've seen this happen time and again (and lived through it myself), and it just makes me sad. So to the developers and coders and 3D designers, I appreciate you and wish you the best. From what I've seen, you've got a hard and busy month ahead of you.
Agreed. Should Odyssey be labelled "early access" or "beta" with a roadmap of updates for fixes/improvements, then that would be fine imo.

I don't envy the devs and the pressure on them however.

From what I experienced in the alpha so far, this is not ready for a release in 1 month. This is going to be fun times.

Will game studios ever learn? Didn't Cyberpunk 2077 serve as a wake up call for the whole gaming industry? Release when it's ready. Really ready.

Pfff, give me 30% better FPS and fix the green balls and it's good to go for me. People who want to wait a year are cordially invited to do so.

I'll probably be unable to play for three weeks post launch so you lot can fix the biggest launch issues while I am gone.

Huh!
A WHOLE 12 DAYS earlier, is my thought... (well, probably 11.5 days, but... whatever!)

That is another 50+ hours of play being gained before the end of May!

I hate those people who are even more optimistic than me 😤

This just reminds me of Gamma, with the old 'vertical slice' argument, and people trying to be positive saying 'oh, there'll be much more than this at release, they're holding the good stuff back as a surprise' - guess what? there wasn't. What we were seeing is what we got.

So... based on what I've seen of Odyssey so far - good luck with the launch Frontier. You'll need it. And, as Old Duck said, I feel sorry for the Devs. wading through this. :(

Looking forward to a great release! I really enjoyed testing the Alpha and appreciated the new hand and feel. From my perspective this was the missing thing -> you give us feet and we keep it going :p
Great work, FDev - thank you!

I look at it this way: 1.) I'm not going to buy another Graphics Card, just in order to play Odyssey. 2.) If I buy it, it would be at a later stage, when all those bug's have been dealt with. And only if it can be played with the hardware that is used for Horizon. 3.) As most of the Gameplay is as before in our Cockpits, it would have been more beneficial to get Ship-Interiors. 4.) The mini game of the Sample tool is a joke !!!
