ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey PC Launch Date

Cool, I wonder how the dev's feel about this date.

Issue Tracker:
4230 unconfirmed issues.
120 confirmed

So that's 16/17 working days to process 4000+ issues and fix all the ones that are real, non-duplicated issues.
Good point. I wonder if the left hand (CMs) is talking to the right hand (devs)? Or maybe they're just all extremely optimistic?

Not to mention the EAP(Early Access Program)/Alpha/Beta/whatever they want to call it - still has another 7/8 days left.
And we haven't even started on the compatibility testing of Phase 4 yet.

I admire their confidence.

PS: Cyberpunk 2077 was still fun and I completed it a couple of times - before the massive patch that fixed a few thousand bugs - just saying :)
The unconfirmed ones have affected less than 10 people enough to support the report so presumably won't get to the point of processing until all the confirmed issues have been dealt with.

I suspect a large number of the 4230 will actually be duplicates, most of the time I was confirming reports the longest bit of the job was deciding which report was the version most likely to be found and therefore get to the confirmed stage.

Here's the thing-based on my last 3+ weeks of mucking about in the Alpha, I feel relatively confident that Odyssey will probably release in a state on par-if not slightly better-than their previous releases.

However, I am still of the view that a push back of the release date-even to just the 9th of June-would be highly advisable, & might even give them the opportunity to add in some of the stuff that was at the top of the Alpha Thread Wishlist.

Yeah it's a bit of a shame they'd not polish the game before release. If we wanna keep playing with squadron we all gotta either buy or not buy Odyssey, as instancing won't work between the groups is annoying. I won't pay them to test their game honestly. Might revisit EDO about when it releases for consoles, I guess it should be mostly fixed and optimized by then. Serving as a beta tester for console players, and paying for that? No thanks.

Is that not a 'how-long-is-a-piece-of-string' argument though? There will always be more they could add, and at some point they have to cut off and release. I agree with you it wil likely come out fine, bugs and all, but I imagine the same would be the case in June with a few more features. And then those other features need to be added to the console version.

Having a date and sticking to it, disasters aside, is probably sensible.

What I find funny is most of this thread and the comments expressing surprise/horror/amusement at the release date of 19th are written as if until today they expected months and months of additional fixing before a release. But the date was always by 31st May. I don't get the sudden shock they are on track.

Sure, we knew it would be around end of May, but then the "Alpha" happened and we saw that several aspects of the game need major reviews, like the whole UI, the whole Exobiology rank, art and assets inside zero G stations (stuff placed like it had gravity), GalMap, etc...

Some of us I guess hoped Frontier would take their time to fix these problems and the shock comes from knowing the remaining 4 weeks will be enough for just optimization most likely, meaning they'll release what we had in the Alpha: a bloody mess.

Not really, in this case. The previous release window was "Spring 2021", a date that goes all the way up to the 21st of June in the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore, a release date of May 31st through to June 14th would have been much better, IMO, as it would have given the Devs more time to further improve current features, whilst possibly even adding in a few of the wishlist items from the Alpha Test thread (like an Infiltrator Suit/Electronic Lockpick, and maybe even a decent mini-game for genetic sampling).

For the record, Humankind-a game I was massively looking forward to-got pushed back from April to August, and I am perfectly cool with that. So I delay of only 4 weeks would definitely not bug me in the slightest.

The walking around UI needs work - unless we're alpha testing the console version hence the need for an action wheel. People with keyboard and mouse and HOTAS and more buttons and switches than light plane don't need an action wheel, especially one that was sluggish and featuring icons with barely a passing resemblance to icons already used in game.

The Galaxy Map has been discussed. Elite Dangerous is already a slog of chores to engineer ship modules, don't make it more of a click fest than it is already. Explorers with vastly more experience than I have has already posted their opinions on the hot mess of the Gal Map UI.

The bio-scanner. Glad it's being changed, but it's being replaced with a pointless time sink - I really hope a DNA sequencer mini-game can be worked on which is more logic based than, point and click adventure or reflex based.

I wish FDEV could take inspiration from existing games because they seem to mess it up when they try to implement their own ideas.

With the delivery date being much closer than anticipated, perhaps we have been playing a much older version of the game for bug-busting and net-code testing?
I'll laugh my socks off if the released version is all of the fun in alpha and the performance of Horizons... There would surely be some 🧂 to harvest from a few names...
It would make sense though for certain. They could well have had us test the content that they simply couldn't, mass load on netcode, mass player interaction, some of the new features and most certainly the numerous gfx configs we all have between us. They did state that for the live streams they had to keep going in and out of different builds that were in varying states.

It's very plausible they have their release build in a good state and we have simply helped with a small number of issues, i think RC you could be right on the money there.

Don't get me wrong. As long as they complete the Planetary Tech and-in so doing-fix the Geological Filter for the DSS in the process, then I will be happy with the game as it currently is in the Alpha, minus a few minor optimization issues and stuff from my wishlist that will be missing ;) .

We'll see you on foot planet-side!
does "built for the ground up for vr" support basic vr already?

so rest assured that i am very excited and eagerly looking forward to meet planet-side but can't share any news about purchasing oddyssey at this point. stay tuned!

Fingers crossed, they have acknowledge that the planet tech is not fully implemented yet and the filter issues also. I'm not so naïve to believe that it will all definitely work on release. Heck they could make cyber punk look slick on its release. All we can do is give the opportunity for them to dazzle, if they don't........ well i'm an optimist lol

I'm sure it won't all work perfectly on release. But it's not like this is the entire game... this is only a part, and it won't keep us from enjoying what else is out there while we watch the game continue to be polished.

Well, at least, I'll be enjoying it from afar while the PC players work out the bugs for the console players. ;-)

It is a sacrifice I am willing to make, as a PC player ;) .

For all we know, a lot of that stuff has already been fixed or changed, or will be soon on another build, which is further ahead then the Alpha build.

We are all assuming that what is here is what we are getting, but the CMs keep saying there is more then what we've seen, like specific engineers for our suits and weapons, engineer bases that we can explore on foot.

The CM team said this was a snap shot to check that the basic mechanics work, which they do on the whole.

I'm very interested to see what it will be like on release and what extra stuff is in.
