EVERY SINGLE update.

Why? Just why? We are lemmings to the word of Frontier.
How about at least putting a server status that is honest? It still says: OK. It's not.
Because if you did you would say download today, play tomorrow.
EDIT: Toned down.

Never change a running gag. Everybody who's been to Hutton, er, around the block knows about this.

I just hope (sincerely) that not too many newcomers throw the toys out of the pram after a few attempts to log in, demand (and get) a refund from Steam, and leave a nasty review. Personally, I think Frontier might want to ramp up servers right before such a big release, but the old adage, "What's not broken does not need to be fixed (no matter how crappy it runs)," is, apparently, still valid.

I don’t play many online games, but they all feature servers that collapse opening day. Yay.

Pretty much what I expected, given that I saw nothing much different from the alpha other than the prettier planet tech in my short sessions Performance was better, but never really tested it, since I was generally on empty planet surfaces.

Server crashes immediately after the biggest update ever? It's not unreasonable. Give them time.
Ok guys, you can go but give us some time before you go 🤣

It happens. Even the Apple Store (a company with more money than many countries) goes down during major releases. It'll clear up in a day or two. Now all the other problems with Odyssey, they'll likely be with us for a whole lot longer, if not forever.
It's not because even Apple make mistakes that's not mistakes 🙂

It's actually pretty unreasonable... they even had the sales data to predict the load.

Pretty much ever modern consumer facing application is designed to scale capacity dynamically these days.

I don't know why video game players are so forgiving. If Apple released a new phone and their servers went down on release day due to a huge load spike and people couldn't use them there would be a (totally justified) freak out

Some one has never played an online game ever....

There are a lot of valid complaints today. This is not one of them.
I give FDev a small pass because their servers are kinda insane, but I don't think its unreasonable to assume that you can play a game the day it launches. I've played dozens of online games and Elite is the only modern online game that has server issues of this caliber and has them consistently with each update. The problem is that people don't know when they'll actually be able to play the game. IT also kills a lot of launch day hype. Instead of screenshots and cheers, there's just a nervous chuckle and screenshots of people not being able to connect.

Its not taken seriously in the industry, but this is very bad PR. A lot of the effort to build hype is wasted when people see posts about how buggy everything is and then decide not to spend their money. Or worse, they can't even access the in-game store (which is my case). That ends up being a lot of money left on the table simply because the game botched yet another update launch.

Its also a little surprising because we already know that the servers are gonna get hit hard. This has happened with almost every major update for the last 6 years and yet they are still facing major server issues on launch days. I don't think its unreasonable for people to be upset about it and in the end its FDev who is losing. If they're ok with players losing hype and deciding not spend on money on Elite, its really not our problem. It just means you shouldn't bother taking the day off or anything like that (and to be frank, that's the attitude I'm seeing, which is pretty bad).

Yep. Don't like people wasting my time.

It's also the only game that has a single BGS shared across three platforms, at least that I'm aware of. Games like COD, Battlefront, etc break players up into countless smaller shards, which is very different than having one single database that has to track a constant stream of transactions coming from every single player regardless of mode or platform, and then making real-time calculations based on those transactions to influence hundreds of thousands of markets, faction states, etc. You have to admit that's pretty intense when compared to the basic match-making that most game servers provide.

BTW, I never expected to be defending Frontier today, LOL.
