EVERY SINGLE update.

You waisted you own time. Don't set time aside to play on patch day in any online game. Everyone knows that. If you did it, you have none to blame but yourself.
Pretty sure major outages are not normal every time there's a patch day or major release in other games. They absolutely shouldn't be given that anyone can spin up/down dynamic capacity in a cloud service provider as needed if they have designed their backend well.

It's definitely not normal at all in the general online services industry outside of games (e-commerce, banking, etc)

I'm pretty sure you don't know what you're talking about. I have been playing online games for 25 years, I have never had a patch day go smoothly. Ever

So... because many companies have bad practices, we just have to accept them and deal with them?

It's also the only game that has a single BGS shared across three platforms, at least that I'm aware of. Games like COD, Battlefront, etc break players up into countless smaller shards, which is very different than having one single database that has to track a constant stream of transactions coming from every single player regardless of mode or platform, and then making real-time calculations based on those transactions to influence hundreds of thousands of markets, faction states, etc. You have to admit that's pretty intense when compared to the basic match-making that most game servers provide.

BTW, I never expected to be defending Frontier today, LOL.
Technical solutions are not our business. I'm not here to tell them how they should have developed their game or organised its launch. If they say it's good today, i expect it to be good today, not later.

On the upside, I'm just about to finish writing up complete annotated and worked solutions for 90 calculus problems.

Thanks FDev, my students will be 'delighted'.

Okay, I'll give you that, in light of this very "sappy happy PR release" from Frontier:

I did cringe reading this marketing masterpiece while observing the very starkly different reality that is Odyssey ATM.

Fair points - but this is also offset to some degree by the P2P nature of the instancing.

And? I've been playing PC games since the 1980s. The idea that every online game falls over (especially now that they are all mostly cloud hosted) on patch/release days is complete nonsense.

FDev are completely consistent.
They hint and tease, then under deliver
They fail to do a smooth launch on every launch they have ever done.
Unfortunately, it's us stupid players that fall for it every time - each time I tell myself - don't try and play on patch day - and each time I do - and I regret it.

We knew Odyssey was not going to be good on launch, as soon as they announced that Horizons would not get the graphics and planet tech - I knew they had not managed to optimise it enough - and sure enough, from the little play I've had - it's running at the same frame rate as the Alpha on planets and in most on-foot areas.

Actually it isn't , OK maybe not EVERY online game, but most do have these issues on launch day. I personally can't remember any major MMO that didn't. And the majority of online titles with a large player base also suffer the same issues ranging from say Gears to WOW.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'now they are all mostly cloud hosted'. I assume you mean either AWS or Azure, as any set of servers could be considered a 'cloud'. And that doesn't stop you getting issues.

For example the last game I played that was a large online launch was a s**tshow, and that was Outriders. It really does happen more often than not.

And anyone who has played a Frontier game in the last 10 years knows what to expect day 1. Personally I find it quite amusing watching people lose their minds over a video game.

Some fun knowledge: Part of Elite runs on Amazon Web Service, meaning it ought to be able to expand to meet the demand. BUT they also run some other databases in tandem and I would bet that the issues are coming from trying to access all that data from different sources in high volumes. There's probably a way to smooth it out but they just haven't diverted efforts towards it yet since its a once-every-2-years kind of issue. Hence why I give them a slight pass.

I will say that they made a mild improvement by letting people get into the main menu and tutorials, but its still very undesirable to have stuff clog so badly.

If you are prone to emotional outbursts like you frequently are then you should heed the unwritten rules of patch day and that is to not play on them.
After being very skeptical (cause VR) I bought EDO today ;) I even got to play a couple of minutes. Don't know why, but I keep having this image on my mind of someone trying to move a load of bits to a larger server, while 500,000 phones are ringing :D We'll be fine once the smoke clears, but at least it's not an alpha anymore.

It happens. Even the Apple Store (a company with more money than many countries) goes down during major releases. It'll clear up in a day or two. Now all the other problems with Odyssey, they'll likely be with us for a whole lot longer, if not forever.
I think this would be an easier pill to swallow if it wasn't for all the other issues this game has.
