Was any optimisation done to the space assets?

On my machine at least, ground content feels like its alot better (dr kay..) but station interiors feels identical, ie, nothing was done to them since the alpha. Also i managed to get performance a little bit better, just like the 90's.. turn shadows to low and everything is a lot better. It also feels like the geometry is being computed on the fly.. it takes a very long time for more than a few gross triangles to pop in if your gpu is overloaded. Environment to low helps, but it still is a delay well beyond "pop in" as it is in every other game.

Also i know it was probably wishful thinking.. but the whole expansion is a little bit pointless. Because of the hard bolt on.. if you're configured to be playing elite dangerous the space game, and ignore all the npcs calling out at you, and dont care about the new mission board.. there is literally nothing in odysee for you. You have to go seeking the fps, otherwise there is really nothing new. The station interiors are all the same.. after getting your graphics to work, there's no reason to go back (apart from fps).

I'll give it another go after some optimisations, but yeh just personally the value of elite is in the horizons content. I know you all are keen hardcore shooter fans, so don't expect you to agree, but just saying that's how it is for me. Also the release feels identical to the alpha in substance, it doesn't feel like a step forward.

If you go to the main Elite subreddit on Reddit, people have been posting their hardware and Odyssey fps. Every single person who has posted has reported that their performance has decreased to about a third of what they used to get on Horizons.

I guess its all just a matter of expectations. The community managers and white knights had spun up saying the alpha was just an alpha. While you could lower your expectations, this did create an impression that something would be improved for launch. In space this simply has not happened. Ie, it was a lie. Its still an alpha?

Im just going back to the horizons client. I can't see how anyone can be defending this really. Its all they have sure.. but really... will have to put it back in the box until its ready i think.

At least there are a few more background stars in the skybox.. on my machine at least.

Don't worry, we've been informed many times over the previous months that EDO isn't a FPS. Your eyes are lying.

FPS enthusiasts won't be playing EDO, ya really have to wonder who FD made EDO for. I don't think they know. All the people who I've heard express enthusiasm for EDO also openly don't play FPS. Sucks to be right sometimes, but all that has transpired so far was exactly as I foresaw the moment EDO was shown to be a FPS . . . exciting new experience.

At this point I'm just hoping that FD decides to allow people to stick with Horizons past the actual console launch. I did not sign up for this when I purchased ED and Horizons. It would be a first for me that an expansion renders a game I own nigh-unplayable, despite not purchasing it, but FD did unlock the "Unwanted Expansion" achievement so I'm expecting the worst. I currently play at 1080 to keep everything smooth, so I probably only have a handful of months left to enjoy ED. It's been great lads.

I mean it's "slightly better" in terms of FPS lows. From the Previous "Alpha" phases.

But as a "release" revision it's sooooo far off par as a comparison to Horizons. I've never once had to dial down any setting on Horizons. Have always had it on Ultra 120/144 fps capped regardless of the content I was doing.

I have a suspicion that their frustrum and occlusion culling is broken. The performance people have been getting seems to fall eerily in line with broken culling.

That's crazy.. im a little floored the release is so close to the alpha just with bug fixes. The biggest "feeling" as a result of the release is exactly that.. i hope they don't take horizons away. In a little distress like im about to lose something.

....

Yeah nothing left to say really. I just can't fathom how people can..

Same. Really hoping Odyssey doesn't get folded into the base game any time soon, considering how far below ground zero the performance seems to be

Yeah. There's one fantasy that by the end of the year, it will all work out and the alpha will run like horizons release.

With white knights tearing up any criticism and frontiers self boasting, you can only hope they even plan on doing so. They created an expectation things would be better at release but turned up with the alpha again.. so can't even say that's guaranteed now.

Guess we'll find out in november.

There is going to be a lot of disappointed buyers today. I think Fdev have just killed Elite D. I know I will not be rushing to buy another game from them.

Frontier want to move into publishing other devs games? Dont make me laugh.

Part of publishing is making sure you have a product fit to publish. In my opinion the woeful state of Odyssey is proof Frontier are incapable of the necessary quality control to be a serious games publisher.

Really sucks mate. I was spot on with every prediction for EDO and, sadly, I see them rolling EDO into Horizons too. I always hope I'm wrong with my ED expectations/predictions, but never more so than now.

I think the only chance is they do a frontier trademark give up / "we can't please everyone" for console optimsation, and they simply do what they did with macs and not support odysee. Given horizons works, you can imagine they would leave it around until the costs were greater than the arx sales.

Either way I don't think they would "fold down" anything that would after a patch break the game for currently supported customers who don't buy odysee. That feels like something even frontier wouldn't do.

Keeping Horizons separate would mean either a separate server or more complicated development in the future as they'd have to take into account all the Horizons users. That alone will likely force them to fold down as Horizon users will effectively cost them money otherwise. There's also the fact that keeping them separate would be a tacit confession that a sizable portion of their customers dislike their development direction. The gravity of pride and appearances shouldn't be under-estimated. Most companies would rather force their customers to eat stuff they hate than have egg on their own face. Of course it wouldn't have to be egg on their face, it could be a banner of devotion to customer; it's a matter of perspective, but pride is the norm.

I'm hoping to be wrong so hard.
