Scanning (non-illegal) mode turned bloody

Story Time

So I'm trying to do a fetch quest, looking for a locker and strolling around the place. I pull out my scanner and do a non-illegal scan.

"BOUNTY DETECTED"
(on scanned NPC) screams VERITY.

Now the NPC proceeds to pull out his weapon and start shooting at me, the whole base turned RED, and now I'm the one being murdered lol.
Finally, I end up getting a bounty for killing in self-defense and ultimately murdered by the base security.

>_< what is the logic in that :/

I’m of 2 minds. 1, having a bounty is a deadly offense in Elite so it makes sense that his bounty being discovered makes him react this way. 2, the rest of the base shouldn’t have covered for him, and you shouldn’t get a bounty for putting that villainous loiterer down like a dog.

Untill this issue is fixed any NPC that witnessed the scan will react as if you used the clone function and you will be hunted down and terminated

Yeah, saw this behaviour too. And I kinda agree it makes sense. If you scan a criminal and detect a bounty, they're going to be peeved. It's odd that the others instantly turn hostile - at least if the scanned NPC got out a radio message to say there was trouble, that might explain things.

He he, I just had one of those.

So you pulled out your 'crime scanner' and scanned a criminal, surprisingly he and his friends turned on you... for no apparent reason  :)

LMAO
To be fair, it was a normal compound nothing criminal about the place. Standard outpost.

Well, the "crime scanner" is not exactly that is it? it just tells you who is that person with more details.

Also, considering that the warrant scanner in ships doesn't work this way, it was logical to assume the same would happen in person.

Exactly
1. He pulling his gun was a nice surprise of being discovered.
2. Getting ganged up by the police and everybody on the base while I was still unarmed and being shot at by the criminal made no sense XD. (even security came to kill me)

Were you inside a no-weapons zone? That might have triggered security.
I was inside the common area with the scanner ( legal mode). NPC shot at me after the scan finished and detected his bounty. Then another (worker) NPC that nearby came guns blazing. Meanwhile, I was being shot at with the scanner in hand, grabbed my gun killed the offenders (They shot first), and got a bounty XD.

Yeah, it seems you have to scan every one before shooting (I think!) which is a bit awkward when you're being shot at.....
