Newcomer / Intro Station Alignment

No - it's not just you

Nothing like grabbing some buggy old code to base your next big DLC on

The FD way

This is their way

So does this mean that I have to work it all out again? Anyone have a screen image of the new misalignment?
They have fixed it before so will again no doubt.

No screenshot available at the moment but it is easy to see if you are at any of the non Coriolis stations just fly dead straight out of the station then stop completely and turn to lock at the slot through the canopy you will see the station revolving in front of you like a wheel, look at the hologram and it is spinning like a baton.

That's it - the axis of the station from center of docking port points to the left side of the break in the outer ring of the display.

errmm...no.... that is not directly aligned on the axis of the station in that image - the holo clearly shows they are to the right and low, if you look at the station you can see that too.

Hawknerd, you have nothing to worry about because you took that picture after the release of Odyssey, so whatever they're complaining about isn't affecting you. I didn't notice anything different last night. My alignment was as perfect as ever. Maybe it only affects Odyssey, not Horizons.

Last time they tried to correct it, they calculated the error correctly, but then they added it instead of subtracting it, which doubled the error. Rather than correcting the "+" to a "-" in the code, they abandoned the change and went back to how it was before.

Last night I played around a bit and found that about 8:30 - axis facing away about 15 degrees seemed fairly close.

Amazing how this persists into new code

Well, it IS intentional, same as the axis on the ship hologram to the right. If you take the 2 axes and project them forward, they will meet in the center of your ship. I think the idea is that you're between them looking forward, so they look angled. It's a weird system, but that's how they designed it.

How they managed to brask this boggles the mind…I‘m pretty much a full time Space Trucker so this is part of my routine. Very frustrating having to “eyeball it” and try to ignore the holo…

Not sure I understand - the alignment hologram still works properly in Horizons - the axis of the station points downward a bit directly at the left side of the break in the outer ring of the hologram display. Using the same technique in Odyssey brings you out of SC facing the side of the station with the docking port to your right facing 90 degrees away from your position.

Are you saying the different behaviors are intentional?

Interesting, I just went into Horizons and lining up the slot perfectly straight in SC resulted in the station appearing in normal space pointing off to the right slightly. Even lining up correctly on the axis in normal apace the hologram was indeed pointing down and to the left. That looks different to me, I am sure I always was able to drop directly on-axis if I had the holo straight on.

So apologies for earlier disagreeing.

No - the oddy holo was offset 90° left in the alpha - same bug was in Horizons a while ago - they obviously used that buggy Horizons build to construct oddy on.

I have yet to run oddy, judging by the grief in the forum I'll not bother for a patch or two.

I'm dabbling in Oddity a bit to get used to the new menus and map system, but it's not enjoyable. The Gal map and System map are so cluttered up it's hard to use. Finding info on cruise distance to mission destination still eludes me.

Years ago I lobbied intensely for incremental development and FD seemed to move in that direction for a while, but now it seems that dropping the huge pile of steaming garbage is once again the strategy forward.

Disappointing to say the least - and there's no telling how much hardware will be needed to get decent frame rates.

Then there's the issues with upgrading HCS voice packs. EDDI and Status Display, etc.

This is going to take at least 6 patches before we start to see where this is really going...

I have a new 38" 144Hz monitor scheduled for delivery in early June and it's looking like a 3090 might be needed to drive it for Oddity...

So it goes

Definitely a First World problem...

Nice theory, but I'm pretty sure incorrect, otherwise they wouldn't have tried to fix it by doubling the error instead of subtracting it, then having to backtrack to how it was before the fix, and posibly repeating that doubling error in Odyssey before they have to backtrack again.

It's always been tilted the same amount, ever since they gave it relative orientation, except when they tried to fix it and made it worse. You can normally get within 45 deg when just coming in from the planet direction, but you have to use a specific technique, like Hawknerd did, to get it 100% perfect.
