A potentially great game ruined by spite, incompetence and mediocre performance and poor AA

I stopped getting excited to see David Braben on stream quite some time ago I have to admit.

Yesterday he talked about "the Earth is really, really small if you compare it to Jupiter and Jupiter itself is tiny compared to the galaxy". I mean, yeah... but what does this have to do with Odyssey?

It's like we're getting the same speech since 2014, no matter the current state of Elite.
He comes across like the crazy old relative who keeps spouting the same old stories at the Christmas meal, and everyone just groans and lets him get on with it because no one wants to hurt his feelings 😀

What an incredibly crass review.

There are many issues with EDO, and some of them should not have got out of the door, agreed - but using terms such as incompetence because you don't happen to like the UI design is just vitriol for its own sake.

I was going to say more, but don't fancy a ban at the minute.
Well they are either incompetent or scammers take your pick, because they took money for EDO in its current state.

LEP was pre-order on all expansions. Your choice was to buy in to that.

No mate - my choice was to buy into Brabens "vision" back in the day, and like the 1000s of other backers, we did so to ensure the game was made.

My LEP was a byproduct as a result of my pledge.

Sure, that was "my choice", but had we (backers) not done so, you wouldn't have a game to argue over.

Same thing, the LEP was sold like a season pass after the crowdfunding.

This is a systemic problem with software as a service, which let's face it, ALL software is SaaS these days (except firmware in things like my mouse). It's this unchallenged idea that "we can keep working on something AFTER we sell it, and that's okay" that has lead to such a broken system.

My personal tool to combat this is to just wait until a product is truly "finished" before I buy it. I'd say 99% of the games I buy are at least a year old by the time I fork over my cash. I save both money and heartache doing this.

We all hate the monster, yet so many continue to feed it.

Though I do understand the temptation of preordoring a game like Odyssey, as there is a FOMO effect that I myself felt when I was debating whether or not I should go against my better judgement and preorder. Thankfully watching others play the alpha (something I would never pay extra for) convinced me to hold onto my food cash.

Yeah. Maybe not the devs but certainly marketing and management. They released it in this state because they thought we were suckers and we would take it.
Unless of course they are completely incompetent and their intentions are pure :D

I'd say they released in this state because they know a large part of the community are suckers that had already taken it through preorders.

I don't think that is the case, ED:O was pretty high on Steam sales list and all that means inevitable wave of refunding. IMO they should've pushed back the release date, but that is always a very controversial take businesswise and there must've been a lot of pressure from above to release.

Ok, I did it already but :
BAD :
-Cockpit is way darker. Seems like I turned off the lights.
-UI in cockpit is way to dark, and hard to read. That's with gamma maxed.
-Radar in cockpit is ridiculously bright ?
-Overexposure for characters portrait. For people with dark hair, it's ok, you just have black hair now. For everyone else, you have white hair. The engineer pictures are all terrible because of that. Details, freckles and color are white washed. See here for more.
-My character inherited a stupid grin. So did my crew.
-Skybox is horrible. It's just white dot on a black canva. That's not how the sky look like, even from Earth with it's thick atmo. See here for more. Including my post with pictures if you live in a city and never saw a real night sky.
-Bookmark can't be set course directly. It's complicated now
-Galaxy map is way more complicated to use
-The entire new UI can be summed up as "everything takes a few more click and is less intuitive".
-We've lost the transition animation when changing ships. It wasn't the best thing in the world, but it was certainly better than a dark screen with a loading icon.

GOOD :
-I like that storage module are now organized.
-We have spacelegs, when it works (6missions 4 failed due to bugs).

You don't have a universal opinion. Neither do I.
Look at the trailer, the planet we have are different. There is even the leftover graphic option they use for the trailer (ULTRAFORCAPTURE). Sure, almost no computer can run with that option, but it makes everything closer to the trailers.

Dude, hyper specific for the complaints, absurdly broad for the praise.

Also some of those are you problems, my cockpit is fine, radar central display thing is not bad.

And what more is there to say ? 2/3rd of the missions I did broke. So I can hardly say I enjoyed them. Walking in concourse is cool, but gimmick. Also, they look all the same, so far I've seen 3templates, the big station template, and the "0g" template, which doesn't look like 0g at all (crates nicely piled on the floor, people sitting on benches, detritus magically sticking to the floor....). Also seen the prison template, which is small and empty, due to not being able to pay my fine/bounty to an interstellar regulator.

I paid for a DLC, and only 1/3rd of its content worked. With an added long list of issues that also affect the main game. What do you expect me to say "I love the bugs" ?

GREED! You left out greed.

Greed is good. What movie was that?

Fdev must think greed is good. Fdev heard the playerbase during the alpha on the UI changes being crap, and the performance being crap, and then they released this hot smelly mess and took everyone's money anyway. And Fdev thank all of you! Don't you feel thanked?

Or perhaps Fdev wanted to out do the cp2077 fiasco. They are off to a good start at it.

Seems like Horizons is not screwed up too bad. Ranks are not showing correctly, I have no idea if missions completed are actually counting towards the next rank. But I ran a bunch of massacre missions, and pirate assassinations last night and everything seemed to work. Performance is good, game looks good, but only until Fdev merge the hot smelly Odyssey mess into Horizons and break Horizons as well.

How and where to start a petition to keep the Odyssey client separate from Horizons for the forseeable future (2021, 2022 at least).

Hey, you bring your bias with you. At the same level of detail as the complaints we should be listing every feature. I'm 100% success for every ground mission.

Last night I jumped a building with my SRV while shooting some lady with the turret while I was airborne.

Then we looted the place. It was epic and after I got back in the ship and flew off.

I found a crashed satellite and stole the data from it. Saw a muchly improved brain tree while getting first footfall on a rock I discovered over a year ago.

Tried out the plasma shot gun on a friend's face.

and moan all you want, new releases are rarely seamless but this one has been a hoot and I'll get up to more schenagans later.

Also, threw down some more ARX so now I'm a space cowboy with a space cowboy hat.

Fing epic.

It works for me so screw everybody else mentality.

The good old "I have a sandwich so you can't be starving". I made a list of what I (I means me) didn't like, and what I (same) liked. Obviously it's biased, that's the entire point of personal opinion ? And you are biased to.

But I'm happy you jumped from a building and spent 20€ for a space cowboy costume.

I don't think pushing ED:O back even further would have made any difference. Most issues are related to core game design decisions. Odyssey feels like a separate game that just happens to use the same launcher as the main game. Exploration (so far) feels like an afterthought to the shooter game. Frontline solutions is a mediocre PvE shooter against bullet sponge bots (when are you, realistically, going to face other players in a combat zone?) with just one game mode. Mission boards for legs and ships are kept not only separate, but separate to the extend that I cannot even easily switch between them to see what sort of mission I would like at that moment. I need to disembark from my ship, run to the mission board and search the offers for something I might like. If I want to see the ship missions I need to run all the way back, enter my ship and use an entirely different UI to search for ship-borne mission again.

Fleet Carriers, despite being developed well within the time frame of Odyssey's development, are entirely left out of the loop. I cannot even disembark on my own carrier to walk around my own ships in my hangar. Let alone proper content like Social Hubs for Carriers or new vendors etc.

When I deploy my SRV, there's a neat little animation of it being lowered from my ship and onto the planet. When I launch a fighter, there's a neat little animation as well. When I disembark on foot...there's a black screen and nothing else. So much for the "Neil Armstrong moment". It feels just as lazy as recycling assets like the Adder as a space taxi and converting a "heavy fighter" (Vulture) into a dropship for Frontline solutions.

There are no new ships, weapons or modules added to the game, let alone things that would create synergies with Legs gameplay. No new SRVs, no "dropship" or "ground support ship". No modules for "drop pods", "spawn points" or whatever else one could come up with. What was that with the "Sphere of Combat" again? Just because Ships, Legs and SRVs could in theory bump into one another, it doesn't create a proper "Sphere of Combat". Let alone PlanetSide 2 / Arma3 like combined arms warfare where vehicles, infantry and aircraft can work together and bring in their own respective strenghts to achieve a common goal.

The bugs, the performance issues, the instability and frequent disconnects are just the icying on the cake. This situation reminds me of the Imperator: Rome release, when the lead developer scratched his head and honestly said "I don't know how to make games anymore". This could and should be a wake up call for FDev Managment. I love Elite and I want it to be good. I really hope the harsh reception of Odyssey can be turned into a lesson of humility and reflection. I hope FDev takes the Hello Games route now and comes back from this disaster stronger and with a new focus on making a better game instead of just a fancy marketing stunt for the shareholders...

I've given up. I've just installed Horizons again from the launcher after resolving not to touch odyssey until the console release- and five mins in on approach to a planetary base marvelling at the improvement in not only the graphics but the framerate I got the mauve adder error... Sigh...
