Odyssey Progress

Greetings Commanders,

With our first hotfix now released and another one arriving very shortly, I wanted to take a moment to address the wider community feedback and reports regarding performance issues, server outages, and bug reports within Elite Dangerous Odyssey.

First and foremost, I would like to apologise wholeheartedly to those who have been suffering from these problems. I would like to reassure you that we take these issues very seriously and that they are our top priority and focus.

Our second hotfix will be released very soon, which we hope will address more of the reported bugs and bring further stability improvements into the game.  We will continue to work on updates which will resolve more bugs and improve stability further.

Some of our players are reporting poor performance on machines where we would expect the performance to be good, and others are saying it is fine. We are trying to get to the bottom of this. I have been playing on my old home machine from 2014, which has an Intel i7 Extreme CPU and a GTX 980 GPU, 16 Gb RAM, playing at 1080p full screen at Ultra. I was doing this so I could have a good feel for how the game was playing on older hardware, and I used this same machine during Alpha. I have also been playing on a high spec 2021 dev machine.

I would like to thank you all for your patience and support. The Elite Dangerous community has always been at the heart of the game. We understand that there are a number of players who have had problems accessing and playing the game and I can assure you that we are focusing fully on improving this for those affected and communicating with you openly and regularly about how these issues are being addressed.

Thank you all,

David
Hi Mr David.

Thanks for your message.

I got some similar specs as you mentioned. What fps did you have? Because I got about 25-35 fps since Alpha on Ultra (instead of 100+ in Horizons).
But more frustrating is the broken graphics, not only the performance. Lights, textures, colors, postprocessing. Did you see all this?
Because that's what I see from the Alpha until now: Source: https://imgur.com/a/Qh82COP

I bought two additional accounts for my family while waiting for the launch, preordered three copies of Odyssey. Because Elite is one of my favorite games of all times.
First I was thinking it's my setup related issues, but then I saw all the same broken graphics and performance on three different machines with different system and hardware.
That's a bit frustrating, you know.

I really hope you guys will fix everything, not only the gameplay issues. But as for now it looks more like Beta testing is started rather than release laucnh.

Regards.

Whoa..... another FOUR HOUR update?

12 hours to download, followed by repeated disconnections, then 23 house of hotfix, followed by 20 minutes of gameplay, now FOUR MORE HOURS of update?
What is going on over there?

Yep, I noticed that too.

I'm very sad about how this is rolling out, even though I was prepared for it.

Releases like this are why a significant part of the player base isn't ready to pay full price, and new players may be very turned off. This isn't a new game, it's an established one that due to it's interconnected nature needs more attention to detail before major releases/DLC's that chance core components. The fact it's broken things in Horizons too, since a proper Beta with cross-compatibility for backend data that's cross-version (CMDR profiles) wasn't even tested it seems, is very telling of the lack of testing and post-Alpha (not to mention Beta, which this release is at best) fixes/considerations. Not only is it a bad DLC release (in terms of instability, not critiquing the content), but it's breaking things for players that intentionally wanted to stay on the stable release and that's the worst part for me as it shows me where the focus is. Don't get me wrong, I'm pro-business and want FDev to make profits here, even if only to continue building on the game, but this may hurt more than help.

No one goes from Alpha to Release in the time this did for good reason, it was pushed out way, way too early and no real fixes were implemented to address the widely publicized issues from the Alpha. Yes, bug do happen and you can't test every scenario, but the sheer number of them, many of which were known in the Alpha, is just unacceptable. This is a product that requires stability, not a DevOps continuous-development and hope for the best product - at least not if the expectation is a player base that will keep coming back, bring in more people, and keep paying for new content.

In 6 - 12 months, maybe Odyssey will actually be ready and fully playable and worthy of purchasing, but it's not for now. I hope it's sooner, when it's truly stable I look forward to some of the features and I intend to purchase it - but not until then.

TBH this bit below describes every DLC Frontier have released. Thats the sad part!

I appreciate the note from David Braben.

I also hope they address how dark everything is. Wherever it is dark in the game, it is far too dark. I understand the new lighting system strives for realism, but just like soundless space, too much realism leads to a poor gameplay experience. The result is it is very hard on the eyes, and I find I can only play for a very short period before I get a significant headache. It doesn't help that the cockpit console text bleeds into the background - this needs a lot more contrast and be crisp and clean.

They haven't acknowledged the darkness issue yet, and hope they address it. For now, I can only play Horizons.

Mr. Braben,

it is a very appreciated gesture to answer to the community in this way.

The team has certainly worked very hard for a long time including the difficult conditions during the pandemic with reduced access to all in-office testing lab.

As an original kickstarter I have experienced not-so-perfect ED release steps before and for the most part your team has always stood up to the challenge.

Now, I am playing with a little more advanced - but far from being a top-notch - PC built and what I am experiencing is a mixed bag of fantastic to mediocre performance of EDO. And (not game-breaking) bugs. But if one looks further that a few hours one can find the impressive new planet tech working very well despite on many occasions it seems not to reach the performance required and advertised.

Disappointed players from a very passionate community react - sometimes harsh - that's normal.

But with the avalanche of negative reviews only hours after release (noone could see and experience EDO by that time to some depth) and lots of very new members to this forum posting over and over the same doom makes me feel that the amount of negativity that is expressed here and elsewhere is somewhat hard to understand and IMHO exaggerated.

So basically: there is work to be done and it would be nice to have one day some stream with technical explanations for what happened once your team gets behind the reasons for the technical issues.

For now: all the best wishes to the team who will - I am sure - over time proove that EDO is in fact the very good DLC they have worked so hard for.

Yeah my eyes have been struggling with the darkness in Odyssey and the effects, good post!

Various degrees - and this is about as bad as releases get.

The state was poor in Alpha and it was obviously not ready.

It got pushed out anyway.

Now they are 'sorry'?

Give me a break.

Playing apologist for this awful release is pathetic.
In fact I like this release. Sorted out bad fps problem with some hints, after that it become playable and enjoyable. There are rough edges, and I do not like what they did to UI, but in my opinion much of this hulaballoo is overblown. Perhaps somebodies had too high expectations.

I think mine was 20mins? Are you sure you're not downloading the entire game?

from 9-30 FPS (settings making NO or only a very tiny difference) to after todays patch FPS up to 60 (planet type(?) and settings depending)

what going on here... this was suypposed to be unplayable

Wow how? My PC isn't much different and alpha was a terrible experience even with medium settings.

I really hope this doesn't mean the devs think the game is optimized and now don't know how to increase performance.

should be getting compensation for those who can not connect- the weekly ARX we are missing out on and the limited items like higher grade weapons and armor that others are purchasing up. Value my time and I'll value your apology.
now that’s a valid complaint two days after a new game or new content comes out.
