ANNOUNCEMENT Odyssey Update 2021

i thought it was a simulator for the past 6 years. thanks for clearing up that mistake.

i think the hundreds of other unrealistic things kind of clued everyone into that. his argument was for picking certain sounds as one of the things it tried being realistic about since it's a design choice to not be (i personally do not care... sound is now very low on my list of things i hate)

it wouldn't be very difficult for 'simulated sound' to be an option you can toggle within your ship (or helmet hud, srv). making the handwavium explanation actually canonical. giving everyone what they want.

but hey, that would be good game design and we wouldn't want that to get in the way of what elite dangerous wants to be.
I agree that a toggled option for the most purists out there would be fine. It never hurts to add more, on the contrary. Elite Dangerous is a MMORPG with a lot of immersion features. Keyword: 'immersion'. It's not a 'pure simulator' and I hope it never becomes one. With the addition of Odyssey this very much reinforces the MMORPG part and adds some FPS elements. Nothing less, nothing more.

Simulators tend to recreate elements of the real life. If it was a pure simulator then we would never be able to jump to other star system, or even travel to distant planets. And what about the Thargoids? Reality is boring. We see it everyday when we wake up in our beds. There is a lot of fantasy in Elite Dangerous and I hope they add even more.

My most desired feature is ship interiors and it 'might' come in the future. But at the moment... the have a full year of polishing Odyssey before they add anything else (in my opinion).

I do believe FDev deserve to be slapped about with a large fish for this fiasco.
Business is good for me currently.

Been playing for about 3 hours today and all is working well for a 6 year old machine iMac running Windows under bootcamp - 24gb ram, 4ghz quad core intel i7. AMD Radeon R9 M395x 4gb. FPS drops a bit (from 60FMS to about 30) as I approach planet surfaces (to be expected considering age), but everything else is good - loads quicker than Horizons and no problems with the launcher. I'm going to give it more time tomorrow - just shocked that people on much better kit than mine are having such issues.
Don't wake up the MAC community

Sorry to burst your bubble (no pun intended) but while Elite Dangerous has indeed some realistic elements, it is NOT intended nor does want to be a pure simulator. If you want to experience pure space simulation then go elsewhere.
and who are you to tell me to go elsewhere? Com on man, what I wrote are valid opinion. I respect your right to disagree, but if you want to interject into a conversation, please bring valid argument or... as you say, go elsewhere. A forum, is a place where people can exchange; censoring people by telling them to go elsewhere whenever you disagree isn't a proper answer and clearly if you lack the understanding of what is an appropriate exchange of opinions... Well, you might want to go elsewhere... I can't help to wonder what is your interest into trying to invalidate criticism toward a corporation... Are paid by FDEV? Are you a shareholder? There is nothing for you to be gain by telling people to go elsewhere... It's toxic and inappropriate. This is the only answer you'll get from me.

Thanks for finding a better way to explain my thoughts. I don't think that it will be too confusing now because it does translate exactly what I had in mind and I do happen to totally agree with your idea of having a "simulated sound" button.

Well, if I'm being honest, there might be some kind of sound wave which may be measurable with specific instrument, but II highly doubt that if you walked on the moon, you would hear your own footstep, yet alone the step of someone else. Same goes for most sound we hear in the game. If you actually run out of energy in your suit or turn off your life support in your ship, the sound you get is way more realistic imao. I wish that there'd be a way to unable "realistic" sound mode" so you would hear it like that moste of the time but still hear clearly any radio coms like your covas or the galnet news. I don't really care about "hearing" my foes... It's just annoying to me. and keep thinking, you are in a pressurised suit... How would you be able to relay clearly the sounds from the environment. Are the suits and space ship equipped with devices that translate sound particule into coherent sound for you to use as usefull data and this in real time? I really don't get it.
Well if your space suit is a vacum on the inside, then yes no sound from your own feet, But as the suit has air in it, it will transmit all sounds from inside, if someone was to tap you on the space helmet you would hear it. Your ship is a container, it contains air, when you canopy goes pop, you are then on life support in a spacesuite.

He didn't even disagree, he just said if you want a true sim maybe you should go elsewhere. That seems a valid suggestion; you just don't like it.

Then you start insinuating that he is paid by FDev or is a stakeholder. Again, if someone doesn't agree with you and offers a suggestion - it doesn't make it a toxic comment.

I was beginning to enjoy some of the speculation on the science of sound in space * , but other recent posts are making this thread silly and boring, and a little bit sad. We're all interested in the success of Odyssey. Insults and accusations from one commander to another are neither helpful nor even remotely cool. Being kind to one another regardless of differences in opinion, on the other hand, is.
So if you're feeling cranky go find someone or something lovely to hug (ideally someone / thing soft, warm and fluffy). Then come back and be nice.

* The correct answer: Sound will be heard by human ears whenever vibrations with sufficient energy to generate sound reach a functioning auditory system. Those vibrations need a conducting medium to move through, which can be a gas, solid, or liquid. So, in space, footsteps will generate sound when vibrations travel from a person's foot or boot up through their bones and suit material (depending on what material that is) and through the air space in the suit, to their ear drum (Try wearing really good earplugs that block external sounds, then tap the bottom of your foot or knock on our knees - you'll hear it, softly but clearly, from inside your own body. Its the same principle). This is why astronauts on a space walk can hear their footsteps against the exterior of a space vehicle / space station, just like they hear their tummy rumbling inside the space suit, and why the Apollo 11 astronauts did indeed hear their footfalls on the lunar module ladder, and on the moon's surface. It is also why you would very likely be able to hear your own footfalls on a planetary surface in ED. So FDev has it right. Loud explosions in space are a little more fanciful.
p.s., As for having a vaccuum inside your space suit, I'm a Space Health researcher, and would not recommend it, because you'd be dead.

You can also hear the wind on a planet with no atmosphere, or a conversation through a rooftop window between NPCs who are not facing you.

But hey... it's just a game.

I will say this... Those random sounds you hear... In your ship, in stations, etc... Aren't so benign...There are clues hidden in what you think is garble. At the same time this will explain the noise in the suit.

"When we speak we generate sound waves. Sound waves needs some atmosphere to carry them, so in ISS or in space suit atmosphere is created artificially, hence they can hear their self voice in space suit."

I'm still getting the maude adder error, anybody know how to fix this? I haven't been able to play since the game came out and i'd like to play it.

To add to the download time discussion. Some of us have the 50gig or so Alpha files downloaded on our HDD's could it cut down the download time if you moved all files from PUBLIC_TEST_SERVER_64 to elite-dangerous-64-odyssey ?

mmm, it would not be correct since the alpha 4 files have the bugs, what I did was delete that folder (of the alpha4) and voila, recover the space

Did you try different modes? Yesterday, I was getting the "tauped" error when trying to play in open. I switched to PG and I got in right away.
