Odyssey Progress

I would like to reassure you that we take these issues very seriously and that they are our top priority and focus.

Clearly with a release such as this, you do absolutely not take these issues seriously as it is clear your bank balance is your top priority, not a stable, playable game. If it was your top priority you'd have listened to players in the beta and fixed the issues then. Please don't lie to our faces, it just removes your credibility.

As someone who writes software as well I can say one thing:
Writing for today's modern OS's is waaaaay more complex than it was back in the DOS days there is way more balls to juggle to get everything working with not only the OS but drivers and that it not taking into account managing timing, networking, resources. Back in the DOS days you just had to get it to run, look good and not crash, nowadays it's a nightmare to get even that which is why systems like Unity and Unreal are so popular.

Saying that I still would not have released an alpha build as "ready for primetime" as that just screams of higher ups trying to scratch money for the shareholder's. FDEV would make more money releasing more Dev videos, engaging the community more and releasing solid products. Yes developers screw up we know this but the release crap and patch later is inexcusable at least release the finished article. If we want things changed later then change them but don't release a product that isn't at least feature complete!.

Greetings Commanders,

With our first hotfix now released and another one arriving very shortly, I wanted to take a moment to address the wider community feedback and reports regarding performance issues, server outages, and bug reports within Elite Dangerous Odyssey.

First and foremost, I would like to apologise wholeheartedly to those who have been suffering from these problems. I would like to reassure you that we take these issues very seriously and that they are our top priority and focus.

Our second hotfix will be released very soon, which we hope will address more of the reported bugs and bring further stability improvements into the game.  We will continue to work on updates which will resolve more bugs and improve stability further.

Some of our players are reporting poor performance on machines where we would expect the performance to be good, and others are saying it is fine. We are trying to get to the bottom of this. I have been playing on my old home machine from 2014, which has an Intel i7 Extreme CPU and a GTX 980 GPU, 16 Gb RAM, playing at 1080p full screen at Ultra. I was doing this so I could have a good feel for how the game was playing on older hardware, and I used this same machine during Alpha. I have also been playing on a high spec 2021 dev machine.

I would like to thank you all for your patience and support. The Elite Dangerous community has always been at the heart of the game. We understand that there are a number of players who have had problems accessing and playing the game and I can assure you that we are focusing fully on improving this for those affected and communicating with you openly and regularly about how these issues are being addressed.

Thank you all,

David
Refunded.. uninstalled the game also.. i'm done with you Frontier, the last straw broke the camel's back.. and other sayings and such. I cannot take it anymore, 5 thousand hours, over 100 dollars US i have given you.. also patience and time. Look, i KNOW the community might not like me personally that much, this is understood.. but I LOVED this game, I am passionate like many are in our community, I give you my feedback and criticism openly now.

Your designers, management, and executives RUINED it.. and it literally hurts, David. (no, not the lower level developers, i know they just do what they are told to do) You lied to us, overcharged us, and gave us a broken "finished" product. Marketing's fault? NOPE, YOUR FAULT, DAVID. I'm done with you and.., David, you should not only fix your game, but I still say you need to fix your studio. I saw your apology on the forum, I accept it. Now.. it's time you faced the reality that is your studio and the quality of the product they just released, the "false-advertising".. misleading the consumer, the sheer incompetence of your higher up employees, and accept THAT... Now, after all these years of your complacency.. GO.. go fix your studio, David.

There should have been a proper beta instead of rushing it out and for me a more balanced up date for those who just want to fly yes there is content but lack of depth. All the stuff that is in the game that no one can find should be seriously addressed (apart from raxxla that should be hard). Not taking anything away from the work put in from all teams involved as they are doing what they are told to do but if I was to put stuff in the game I would certainly want commanders to find it just remember those gosh and wow moments we all should be having no more disappointments.

Yes, modern software is a flippin' mess. You could ask yourself how we got from the DOS days to this, but instead I'll just say that Odyssey is King of the Hill, when it comes to a mess right now, and it's not that the competition isn't tough.

It's probably not the devs, and it's probably the management, but in all honesty, even the devs have to make up their mind if they believe in the crap from the management, marketing (and most likely HR) sooner or later. I think it's called integrity.

Have you not been entertained? 100usd 5000 hours, that is entertainment for 2 cents per hour. you cant really say that because you spent money on something, that it is a sound argument not to play the game anymore, even if you paid 1000usd it would come up to 0.2 usd per hour played, in your case.

Yes they released it too early, they can't win last time they delayed it and got slammed for that instead. this is at least playable to some degree, lower your settings to , but I can still play it fine on a Gf 970 i5 3550k.

tbf yes but also no, I wouldnt call 30FPS in combat zones fine, or 40FPS in settlements while space is 200FPS
But the performance issue seems now to be top voted in the issue tracker and the reddit post with a detailed analyses is linked mutliple times so one can only hope.

Man, I really get how folks are mighty ed at this, and although I'm not condoning what's been released, but folk's where is the understanding? The last 15 months have been gripped in a global pandemic with people having to work from home and all the issues that brings, as well as a heavy toll on personal mental health, do you not think this has had an impact with this release in so many ways? How do you think a developer works from home? Do you think it's just the same? Think we need to respect what people have went through rather than some of the disgusting, disrespectful and complete lack of support/understanding comments on here. People's lives have been made a misery and due to the hard and dedicated work of these folks we can have an escape from that, albeit not a fully functional or satisfactory one but an escape still. I'm not at all saying it's acceptable for a paid release, but we need to accept and appreciate the reasons it's probably like this, which is a global pandemic where people have been prisoners in their own home for well over a yr. Don't know Bout you folks but I have been extremely low at points this Yr and I'm sure our fdev friends have been too.

anyone that replies to my post or in any way is giving me a reaction will be ignored (blocked)..
i don't care, i'm not here to listen to anything you have to say, you don't get it.. the post is to David.

don't concern yourself with my direct feedback to him.

I'd rather wait another 15 months than getting a shoddy release such as this one. Especially while all relevant hardware is hogged by scalpers and crypto currency energy wasters.

How do you think a developer works from home? Do you think it's just the same?
Considering they work for a game dev company, they certainly have the ability to at least, to some capacity, test on their own hardware, at home. Most game devs can also be passionate gamers.

Think we need to respect what people have went through rather than some of the disgusting, disrespectful and complete lack of support/understanding comments on here.
Both you and I know that the anger is not unfounded and not uncalled for. This was clearly rushed. The writing was on the wall during the "alpha".

People's lives have been made a misery and due to the hard and dedicated work of these folks we can have an escape from that, albeit not a fully functional or satisfactory one but an escape still.
No, the game worked fine and perfect while it was still Horizons. Sure, Horizons has flaws, but none that are gamebreaking.

If the company respects their devs, their intellectual property and their customers, they would have rather delayed the expansion instead of shoehorning it down our throats to appease their greedy investors. Investors only care about money. They'd rather see a company die if it earns them more short-term than in the long run.

Don't know about you mate, but I manage a team of 15 people working remotely and even asking a question working from home can take 15 mins, something that takes 2 secs in the office can take 15 mins due to variable home broadband networks etc etc I need least 10 mins to open a shared excel sheet, so I'd imagine trying to optimise a game not to gona be plane sailing. People aren't robots, you cannot expect them to be unaffected by what's been going on, but we see from your reply that don't matter to you and that fine, if you been working through this time I'm pretty sure your own job been impacted by all this, so there the same. Again I'm not agreeing with what they done but I think we all need to have a bit more understanding and appreciation for the extreme circumstances everyone has been working under

I work from home. And it doesn't take 15 mins to get an answer to a certain question. In most cases the answer is there immediately. We use Cisco Jabber or WebEx (depends on the number of contacts involved in a topic) and contact by IMs through Jabber or by IP Phone. Broadband is no issue, I even have redundancy (4G and VDSL). Screensharing also works well and doesn't take up too much bandwidth. Sane developers of all trades (i'm not a game dev, but I code) also use version control systems such as Git.
Concerning the shared resources, we use Sharepoint, Jira and Confluence for progress status and code documentation and they work seamlessly and while in concurrent use.

So yeah, the current pandemic is no excuse for developers. Especially those as big as Frontier.

That works out to $0.02 per hour. I'd love to know what other form of entertainment you can get for that kind of value.

Aye? Very good, you must be lucky to have such a top end working from home set up? Large department or organisation? Mate I work for the UK gvmt and can assure you our systems have been melted, even though we use a vpn trying to comm with people outwith actual calls is a time delayed nightmare, my office has 400 folks working from home, maybe it just me, but never been a day where those 400 people get an email or an IM instantaneously, I use jira and confluence to which is OK of dealing wihh a small group, but dpt sizes of 150 plus - forget it. Again though hardware and wfh ability don't make a difference if your staff are shell-shocked and traumatised with the global pandemic.

I'm sure David Braben know this person's view very well, considering he regularly berates David and the devs on David's twitter feed. Just lovely.

While the words are appreciated, it does very little to assuage the complaints of so MANY MANY players who PAID for a product portrayed as launch ready.

Perhaps some ARX awarded to all Odyssey pre-purchasers might sooth things a bit?

Especially for those stalwart players who believe and want everything to work and who defend FDev and what it's doing, a little thank you for your patience and perseverence would go a long way don't you think?
