New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

This is such a shame, I really liked the idea of wondering around a few planets.
Think at this stage it’s just best to continue in horizons until all this is fixed by the autumn.
Hooray for everything. nothing \o/ 😩

Flimley

Perhaps, but they are much easier to spot now.
really? beacuse the old grid pattern of craters which could be found very very often, on some planet more obvious than on others.... it was extremly visible, way more visible, way more obvious than anything presented so far in this thread... atleast that horrid pattern seem to be gone now?

and funny thing is, not many ever complained about it in the past, probably bec it had always been there... check my 2 other post a couple of pages back for prime examples

The feature confirmed there is clearly "known POI locations have changed in the game, bases have moved from flat locations to hilly locations, etc".

Is reading not that common anymore? 🤦‍♂️

Totally agree. The deliberate obtuseness of some is annoying as much as the issues in the game. The answer clearly pertains to the POI terrain changing not the state of terrain generation in general. The other indicates they are aware of the poor texture reports and have an issue on it.

I didn't notice. I notice now.
Check my previous post for screenshots :

In Horizons, pretty much the entire planet was one repeated texture. The rocks were the same rocks, the land was the same land - on every single planet. If a planet was cold, the texture was white, globally. With the exact same rocks everywhere. If it was hot, it was the exact same colour all over (ok maybe with many minor variations).

Almost all landable planets were identical. It was EXTREMELY rare to find anything substantially different.

In Odyssey I'm seeing different terrain a few miles away, on the same planets. I'm seeing all sorts of weird and wonderful formations.

The main problem I think with the new planet generator is the height maps dont work. They are too mathematical, it looks like its been mathematically generated with too little randomness thrown in. Extreme terrain seems to have been replaced with not so special heightmaps. Though it has to be said I've not exactly been everywhere yet.

-This is the final version of new planetary tech, nothing will change, this is how all planets will look now !!!111
Can this really be? Not only is the explorer community quite large, it's also one of the oldest groups who have supported the game. Even one of the best known Youtube personalities that plays ED is an explorer first and foremost, AKA Obsidian Ant. They may want to keep it like this, but i honestly think if they do, they're going to haemorrhage (yes i googled that to spell it right) players at a rate they've never seen.

I just love the belittling attitudes towards anyone who is willing to allow Frontier some leg room to explain , fix , or correct issues .
Apparently we are "Apologists" - as if Frontier is laying Siege to Gaza or something . Lighten up .

I have several problems/issues with EDO - but somehow I am still managing to play the game without spasms of outrage and anger .

Gotta love this meme, it's a classic.

How about this one?

It's confirmed as a feature.
I suspect English is not your native language then, as again that is about something else.

Can this really be?
Hmm.... We can't know this, but:

Odyssey seems to be barely functional in some core areas,
so if FD did not manage to make features like missions, jumps without disconnections, multiplayer/multicrew, reasonable rendering performance etc work as intended,

I doubt that planetary tech would be that one part of game which is finished and bugless.

But, this may be just reasoning based on hope, we'll see.

Oh you know how it is Old Duck. Just take any iteration of:

"x has always been this way so it's okay for y to happen!"
"you can't expect things to be perfect"
"just give it time!"

And you've got yourself a summary.
I'll go with C) just give it time.

Of course my $40 will remain in my wallet for that duration. Maybe in the meantime I'll play with ice planet shaders in Horizon and see if I can make them look a little better.

To go slightly off topic...
Q: Will the changes include a multi-source lighting system to reflect the presence of multiple stars in systems that have them?
As we're aiming for similar specs to base game for Odyssey, we won't be including a multi-source lighting system, for performance and art reasons.

Boo!!!!
Maybe how about a secondary light source for more powerful PCs? and what art reason explains only one sun light source where one side of the ship that was in sunlight turns black because the other sun is now shining on you?
This, dangerous black holes and comets was what I really wanted for my flying a spaceship in space game update...

Back on topic...
Yaa boo to repeating textures...

Wow, so totally different planets in EDO use the exact same surface tiles over and over? No more true proc gen planets, but surfaces assembled with hand made tiles like Lego sets?

That is a HUGE step backwards for EDO explorers if true.

New planet tech actually just repurposed dungeon generation tech from TES2: Daggerfall
It was a terrible idea in 1996, and still a terrible idea now.
