Third person view

Quello che dici mi sta bene in parte.

No problem, we're exchanging opinions and I'm fine with disagreement as long as we do it constructivly and as civically as the passion for the game allows. Also I understand very well you want more of Elite Dangerous. The game triggers our imagination quite a lot and makes us wish for a bit more all the time.

Now, the bad news is I'm afraid there won't be any dramatic differences between the alpha and the version at launch, graphically speaking. So you will probably be disappointed by that. When I was talking of possible improvements, I was mostly speaking of future patches.

In any case, this forum is about suggestions for the game in medium to long term, not for the next release. We post ideas hoping they will get Fdev attention. This particular post is about TP view gameplay implementation. The quality and diversity of character animation is probably out of scope ; although of course, we all wish to have the best possible. But I believe quality of graphics and animations should be a different topic, as it's not dependant on TP gameplay.

Also I think you might get more attention if you posted in english in here. I don't know about the policy on this forum regarding language, but I feel it's english only, although I understand not everyone speak english fluently enough to feel comfortable expressing detailed opinions in that language.

I was messing around in my SRV just there, got the camera suite set up as an overhead 3rd person camera. It was great.

I get a better view of my surroundings so I can scan the area for flora more easily. I can really appreciate the animation work that went in to the SRV this way, some of which I'd never noticed even though I've been around since before Horizons launched. The wheels all moving independently of each other to manage the stability, the thrusters firing off. It's quite beautiful to watch.

Seems a real shame that all this great animation work is hidden away for most players.

I love first person for the immmmmmerrrrrrsssssion. But this game could also be really great with a third person camera mode. For all aspects of gameplay, not just on foot.

  • I can view my cosmetic purchase, and quite frankly, I'd be more likely to buy more Arx if I can see my stuff more easily
  • As the screenshot below will show, I get a great view of my surroundings and the vehicle. I can really appreciate this stuff
  • Motion sickness and accessibility. You can get thrown about all over in the SRV, even with maintain horizon headlook on it can be discomforting for some.

Ship, SRV, Foot. 1st/3rd toggle for all. Please!

Actually, I don't think FP vs TP is an immersion matter. TP can be just as immersive, but in a more cinematic way. FP is more "technically" immersive. To sum up, I think it's more about feeling in a "simulation" vs feeling in "a movie" of sort.

Agreed, absolutely. I think I felt more immersed when driving the buggy using the camera to be honest. Being able to take in all the sights, and see the whole buggy as it moves over all the terrain... it was pretty great.

All we'd need is the default Camera Suite mode to act more like a third person camera, and allow us to use the right stick, mouse, or a selected axis on a HOTAS to move it while still controlling the vehicle. We don't need a third person view of the hud really. Maybe a chat window...

Actually now that I think of it, TP might be more immersive due to the fact it gives you better spatial awareness, closer to what we feel in real life, whereas FP view is a very impaired version of our own perspective. In reality, we see much more because we can quickly glance in every direction and we have a wider field of view, not to mention other senses like proprioception. In a way, TP does a better job at giving back a bit of that sense of real life spatial awareness.

This work for vehicles too ; we have way less information about our vehicles in the typical cockpit view of a video game than in real life.
