New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

Believe it or not, I'm trying to keep an open mind about all this. I've asked the producer of the video (I think) some questions regarding it.

Still, the evidence continues to pile up, and it just doesn't look favorable for Odyssey from where I'm standing. I'm definitely not getting my hopes up, not anymore.
So this guy set all graphics to LOW and just trolling probably and saying that these are ULTRA. Now I set mine to low and I have same ugly landscape as in his vid.

Here, this is low settings, enjoy.

Some planet seems OK. I saw a few screenshot here and there. Speaking of the terrain itself, the LOD is buggy and everything look the same from space.
But most planet are flats ? You have gentle hills and that's about it. Once in a while, in a vast desert of nothing you have a weird big mountain out of nowhere.
And don't forget the mini-canyons you can find too. Shallow & wide is all that's found.
Except the 'handcrafted' stuff on Pom 2C. That's deeper but still wide enough to fit a fleet of T9's down side-by-side.

Hey I must have missed your questions. Hit me!

Even worse, they seem random ? There are no logical pattern. There was in Horizon, valley and stuff. Now it's just random.

The guys in the video mentioned Deciat. First engineer for about everyone right. Went there as a noob, it was amazing looking. I literally thought "Ok, this is cool". Took screenshots and everything. Look at it now. It's like Elite dangerous : 2005 edition.

Apparently you need to look VERY carefully to notice the pattern, and even then its not so obvious.
But it seems that our community has some people that are capable to find them quite easily.

They have my sympathy.

I'l just keep enjoying my game, not worrying if one pixel is the same than another one.

If it’s true that all planets are generated from patterns like that, then whether we notice them or not is irrelevant. The point is that there’s not much reason to explore as there was in Horizons because we know we won’t find any truly unique or out of this world planets, or interesting looking ones. They’ll all have the same dull patterns, whether we notice the details or not.

UPDATE:

Looking at the high number of reported planets. I have gone ahead and created an issue tracker for this one. I urge everybody to go ahead and tick "can replicate" with as many examples as they can provide.

Thanks everyone!

ORIGINAL:

What I'm about to show you will be the final straw in cementing the new planetary tech system into a failure.

I remember Dr Kay Ross stating on stream that their procedural heightmap system made use of handmade terrain that would then be randomized across. I was worried when I heard this.

Check this out - I'll let the images speak for itself:

Literally all terrain features both from high orbit to low orbit are repeating, hand crafted, and break every little bit hunger for exploration. There is absolutely no desire to go down and explore since all you're looking at is the "randomly" organized set of hand crafted height map bits the developers have made.

Horizons gives a REAL sense of wanting to go and explore. Find planets with unique features.

Planets in Odyssey are no longer unique. They are just reorganised sets of the same features.

These planets were designed with one goal: look acceptable from an on-foot perspective or when looking from a twilight perspective with a setting sun for the atmo effect.
Wow. That bad. I hope this will get fixed before they'll turn Horizons off. Or that Horizons will remain available as it is.

There is a massive gulf in fidelity between these and the worst examples of graphics, it suggests to me these are results of bugs and rushed developent not some intended 'downgrade' purposed to make us all miserable.

Personally I think the game looks pretty nice in these two, I try to make them look like general gameplay shots rather than PP and excessively framed beautified ones:

Ok. Sooo. Look at this. LOW gfx preset and ULTRA gfx preset. See which one those guy is using in his vid? Not ultra for sure. View attachment 230781View attachment 230782
Yes, the ugly lod get removed around that height and you start loading the regular terrain. Still look like trash from above up to space.
Still look like a random generated terrain. And look at the lack of details, look at the hill thing middle left ? Texture stretching and random. That's all there is.
