Yong Yeas take on Elite Dangerous Odyssey (Not Good)

100% agree. I didn't know Eurogamer did as well.

For those that seem to care about personal experiences that you know of (since apparently YY is a nobody to a slew of you), how about a review on the state of things from Obsidian Ant?

More might come, Exigeous was commenting about the issues raised about exploration (repetitive pattern, poor lod, same texture,etc...), on the video the poster had on youtube. He was basically in agreement, and would talk to OA. Either this is the result of this talk, or more are to come.

He's too nice to go all the way there... but he almost called out Frontier for lying (which is really the worst part of all this - their dishonestly and total lack of respect for their customers).

Bugs happen and I'm not going to crucify people for making an honest mistake... but that's not what happened here. Management knew the game wasn't close to finished or release quality and pushed it out anyways. That's dishonest, cynical and shows that they think their customers are a bunch of pathetic suckers with no standards.

He's taking everything he's seen, heard, as well as examples and presents it to an audience.

It's called journalism. Personal experiences aren't a prerequisite of journalism.
Again, not knocking him. I was just stating that the video came across more as "people are saying". With smaller niche games like Elite, guys like Obsidian Ant, Hawkes, Yamiks etc.. have been pretty good at divulging information. You know, the folks you'd trust to know what's what. Just feels more reliable. Again, I'm just not well-versed on the ever growing number of talking dudes in front of cameras. Thanks for defining journalism???

Yong Yea is pretty mild compared to a lot of gaming info channels. I have a lot of respect for him.

When Cd projekt red showed the first long demo of CP 2077 to a private audience at E3 awhile ago, Yong Yea was invited. The audience were not allowed to record anything, but were allowed to take notes. Yong Yea painstakingly wrote down the details of gameplay mechanics and his impressions to fill up at least 45 minutes of content. He was so happy at what he saw.

Then came release. He was NOT happy.

Yong Yea is also very anti micro transactions and extremely pro consumer. If he gives incorrect information, he always tells us.

Never heard of Yong Yea, but I've never heard of most famous people, except Mae West and that one guy who was in that one thing that I can't remember.

As for Odyssey reviews, as the jaded and cynical holder of a Lifetime Expansion Pass, I am entirely capable of reviewing it for myself. I give it half a star our of five for at least having editable configuration files, plus two middle fingers up for sucking at almost everything it claimed to be trying to do and for breaking things it should never have touched.

I like it better when others people agree with me, than when they disagree.

Too much consensus always causes me to second guess myself.

I used to do games for Microsoft Game Studios and the Mechwarrior series

Can I bum the Mechwarrior 4 source code off you? I promise I won't tell anyone where I got it.

That's dishonest, cynical and shows that they think their customers are a bunch of pathetic suckers with no standards.

I too am resentful of their seemingly accurate assessment of their customer base.

Uh, I think I have the lobby data and weapon data for mercs, but if I recall correctly Jordan handed everything lock stock and barrel to a small group of Modders called MekTek who... I think vanished from the face of the earth!? Or something. But anyway if you find THAT version of mech 4 mercs, it actually has a hackable full list of source code for you to screw with, no joke.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it. I'll send you a link to the version I'm talking about in DM

I have the mektek version... it's awesome. I actually still play it every few years

I rememeber MekTek, didn't realize their version contained the source. Thanks.

Yeah in order to distribute it they had to remove all MS related hooks and products, which went to a thing that doesn't exist anymore called MS Gaming zone, with the zone stuff removed, it removed DRM, with no DRM, source is active, annndd... last I checked, not fully compressed or compiled!? IDK how modders do what they do.

IIRC the mektek version has better graphics... but it's been 2-3 years since I last really played

I remember the hilarity on these forums when the procedural planet generation for Star Citizen was shown and people were quick to prove that it was just the same blotch of texture rotated. Now we have odyssey where Frontier can't even be bothered to rotate the textures, priceless :D

Yong Yea is obviously not in this community and as he does gaming news stories, he's only reguritating what he's heard about.

Also, it would be much more helpful if all the 1-week old accounts could stop being drama queens, you're giving me (if no-one else) the impression you're doing your best to ruin this game, ruin the community and ruin Frontier.

If you are a 1-week old account and you are here because you've genuinely bought the game, then yes your opinion matters, but if you're a 1-week old account and you're only here to cause trouble, take my word for it, you're wasting your time.

His points are not wrong, he is after all just paraphrasing player and urinalist reviews and criticisms, but it really seems that, like as not, he has never played Elite Dangerous. This annoys me for some reason.
Think rationally for a moment. Would it irritate you if he was regurgitating good news, such as a large amount of copies sold or something similar. Probably not right? Then he'd be a scholar and a gentlemen around these forums, and how nice of him to show interest in a game he doesn't even play.

Isn't that his entire thing? He regurgitates internet drama others have created about games he doesn't play for clicks and views.
Which is fair game, and he does it well.

Anyway, it's definitively bad publicity for FDev, with a quite large audience outside of the usual YT ED Pond.

All we miss now is a Jim Sterling video I guess, to top it all off.

Who are all these people, and why do people bother to watch? Do they really need someone else to tell them what to think, or need someone else to agree with their own opinion?

This is not a dig at you - just People who watch 'Influenzas' in general, and perpetually quote them as if they are some Oracle or other.

Edit: Plus they are bound to say something 'controversial', as that sells / gets hits, and therefore money for them.
