Yong Yeas take on Elite Dangerous Odyssey (Not Good)

I asked why should we give a damn about the opinion of a Youtuber who doesn't even play the game. The post was clearly written as if this random persons opinion is meant to matter .. why? Because he has a lot of subs? Big whoop. It doesn't make his opinion any more or less weight.

I'm not mad, nor did I state my opinion one way or the other.
He doesn't really give his opinion. He's just saying what is going on. His focus is usually on companies releasing products way too early in a broken state and charging full price. That, and microtransactions are his biggest targets.

It was about time. Yong told things as they are, like he always does. More of the big gaming youtubers and journalists should cover this mess, as they do with the other big companies.
Throwing an alpha as a released product and then pretending that you didn't know about the bad performance and how much broken and unfinished it is.. well..

I think this thread has gone completely off the rails.

It doesn't matter if you subscribe to him, or have never heard of him. The exposure popular youtubers give to games, both good or bad, is extremely important to the general perception of a game. It doesn't matter if you've never heard of him, or like him, his subscriber count and average viewing figure should tell you he reaches a LOT of people.

The fact EDO is even on his radar is bad enough.

It's much worse than PC Gamer running a negative article on the game.

It won't kill the game, but it's the worst kind of 'press' in 2021.

...................... but who is this guy?
Don't know and don't care and I'll get back to you when I do start caring but don't hold your breath on that.

Among Us is the best example. Was released and completely flopped for almost a year. Cue a bunch of streamers and suddenly it becomes one of the biggest games of the year.
I mentioned several games. Subnautica, Rimworld, Kenshi (especially in japan, came later around in the west, ironically), cities skylines.

And what about the biggest of all, Fortnite ? It was a crappy pve game nobody heard about, until they made a pvp mode, and a few popular youtuber/streamer played it. Then it went viral, and well, you know the rest.

That and basically every other BR game that comes out now. They all owe their success to Twitch.

I wonder which of my comments Frontier decided were "political" when they censored me just now. Im not sure as I cant see the comment.

Was it where I said "check out SEO" to understand how search engines arent impartial?
Maybe was it when I discussed the economy, and how capitalism causes the conditions in which companies - any company, this one today - have an incentive to release broken, unfinished products just to keep paying their own bills? Hmm, I wonder. Which comment was it that strayed into "politics"? The honest ones? The trash moderation style present here since 2016ish is still present, I see. Flame on, mods. IDGAF, and can use the ticketing system exclusively if the forums become too problematic.

Indeed.

Yong Yea's channel has influence on the investors and analysts who might be considering putting their money in Frontier. It's always about money.

Frontier Marketing doesn't send out gifts to youtubers purely out of altruism.

Yong Yea's video, is in my opinion, might very well be one of the factors that will effect the most change for the positive in the development of Odyssey.

Frontier listens to money more than us. Frontier hasn't fixed longstanding bugs because they could get away with it. The debacle of Odyssey, with the help of Steam Reviews and Yong Yea, has put Frontier under the entire gaming community's microscope.

Frontier Marketing must be hopping.

Doesn't matter if you guys know the guy or not.
The whole discussion about it is a waste of time and resources :)

Point is - he could really damage the company's reputation if it finds itself in his crosshair, but he's not malicious, he just reports stuff, that's just a consequence.
What I belive OP is saying, is that Frontier got itself in an even bigger and more serious trouble then it already was.

Currently, his video is at 100K views and will undoubtedly get more. Wondering if the executives at Frontier are now seeing the problems with releasing this early outweigh the financial reporting benefits. The hit the Frontier brand is taking alone is huge and this video only draws more attention to the company as a whole. This is a very, very serious issue for this company and I hope Frontier responds with thoughtfulness. If all we get are incremental patches they will loose some of their existing player base and investors will not want to fund further development of the game. Seriously folks, they need to communicate what the hell is going here. Everyday that passes is a hit to the game and the company. People's jobs are on the line.

Elite Dangerous and most space sims are too niche of a game genre to ever go mainstream IMO.
Oh I agree. But it's also why I said it's very bad this is even on Yong Yea's radar. He IS fully mainstream and covers the very worst practices and behaviour of some of the shiftiest publishers in gaming, the likes of EA and Activision with their micro transactions, loot boxes, crunch treatment of staff, mass layoffs.

This is what FD now find Odyssey being put in the same box as.

I do agree space sims are very niche, and will probably always be that way, but it's not good optics when a mainstream audience will just associate Elite as "that shoddy space game that didn't work".

I can already see Warren Buffet watching this Yong dude's channel hoping to get tips on investments...
If you love Elite then stop defending this release. The whole community needs to be engaged with thoughtful criticism otherwise it will get much, much worse. The ship can correct course but if there's a defensiveness in the community about users worried about the game they love, it will hurt the outcomes we all want to see.

"If you love Elite, then stop defending this release" is one of the most pertinent, appropriate phrases I've heard here since the morning of 5/19.

look at the end of the day yong yea is known in the past for lying by omission or just making things up

he went through some reviews looked at one guy who more than likely experienced a bug once and is fixating on it yong yea out of everyone is just looking at that one review and going "everyone is falling through the floor everyone is dying for no reason everyone is-" and its just not true

as i said earlier i have not experienced all that many bugs since the alpha maybe 2-3

yong yea also i doubt has even played the release he's stating thats that are factually not true like dying in battle sends you to a station it doesn't you just spawn in your ship in low orbit (if you took a dropship there thats your problem)

calling the combat bullet spongy the combat was improved significantly since the alpha at least weapons now deal damage to their opposing mechanic now and when you start upgrading them the damage goes up

if you don't like the use laser switch to bullet formula then you have an option for that plasma weaponry they deal as much damage to shields as they do to flesh the projectile is slower as a trade off so you need to be a good shot but i feel thats actually pretty balanced

One of the most popular and greatest video gaming trilogies of all time is Mass Effect, a story set in a Milky Way of the future. The action in Mass Effect takes place on a space ship called "The Normandy." Mass Effect was responsible for my starting to play Elite Dangerous in the first place. I started playing Elite because I missed being on the Normandy so much. I simply had to be in a spaceship.

When I first started Elite Dangerous I was so elated, because I could see from the start that the Elite Dangerous universe could be an incredible template for users to create their own stories, not unlike Mass Effect. Elite had the same same universe, even more so; Elite had planets and stations for us to create clans and claim territory.

But then after thousands and thousands of hours playing, myriad longstanding bugs and a lack of tools for us to put a personal mark on the game (other than systems found), elation turned to resignation.

Imagine if upon entering a station one was immediately greeted by a Marlinist asking for asylum and offering missions to let you help them. Or being able to go on long sequential story related missions that would upon completion, award you a fully engineered model instead of having to grind for it? Being able to build bases to house refugees or the NMLA?

Elite Dangerous is an incredible possibility.

NB: Consider the popularity of Star Trek. In the not so distant future, Elite could be a template for Star Trek like adventure.
