I didn't believe them. I knew they needed a beta and holding stuff back as a surprise has never worked for any software company, it almost always goes belly-up in some regard. So when the problems all hit I wasn't even remotely surprised.I genuinely believed them when they said they had a more developed trunk than what we saw in Alpha.. that was a lie. In some ways Alpha was actually more developed than what we got in full release. Some features added in Alpha were not there in release and graphics and optimisation were working marginally better in Alpha. It's hard to say it but what they told us was not true it seems
I have, in many comments in this thread including my first post I said they'd completely borked the release and have to work to fix all the problems as quickly as they can. But that doesn't mean I can't also call out the "Kevin the teenager" bridage for being stupid, selfish, and childish. Why should they go scot-free?Then hold Frontier to account rather than calling people who had a right to be upset names.
I agree with a lot of this, though for me personally, I actually like "bland" over exaggerated NMS worlds, because I like "realism" (IMO most worlds out there are bland IRL). As long as there are some diamonds in the rough for me to find, I'll be happy, and based on screenshots I've seen, this is the case. That argument might have legs if it had not been undercut by FDEV themselves claiming that the build was actually much further along than it was. That was a lie. People bought the game based on hearing things like that, which I'm pretty sure, combined with the trailer claiming "in game footage" showing realistic craggy cliffs, blue skies, beautiful lighting effects, all labelled as, "in-game footage" is probably bordering on deceptive advertising.
I think a lot of what is broken in ODYSSEY can be fixed - the absolutely abysmal UI, the performance issues (which FDEV is still trying to pass off as some sort of puzzling bug despite there being clear evidence they simply aren't culling their pipeline), the bad AI, the bad ragdoll physics, the bullet-sponge NPCs, the weird lighting, the strange graphical artefacts, and so on).
My concern is that the planetary tech is clearly a MASSIVE step backward and doesn't appear capable of producing the realistic landscapes we had in HORIZONS - the worlds are bland, colourless, featureless, and flat with craggy outcrops replaced with rounded bumps and look like something from 2005. I don't see this being fixed at all, and that means the game has lost a core piece of functionality and is entirely ruined for explorers, like me, who like to go out into the black and look for interesting planets.
I think your assessment of the people complaining as such is derogatory and wrong. Many are industry professionals, often well educated, often middle-aged and even if they were teenagers they have every right to be angry and you calling them names just makes you look bad, not them. You're in the minority here.I have, in many comments in this thread including my first post I said they'd completely borked the release and have to work to fix all the problems as quickly as they can. I know I'm in the minority, that doesn't matter. People wanna whinge, they have every right to do so. Doesn't mean those of us with sensitive eardrums have to sit through the bilge though. For those with legitimate complaints, which is almost everybody, all power to them I say. If a small minority (which is all I was talking about) want to make spurious and completely untrue claims though that Odyssey will always be like this, and this is what Frontier intended then I'll call them out on it, and if people make completely untrue claims such as Cmdrs Will and Kate did on YouTube and then make no attempt to correct their error, I'll call that out too. All the stupidity and ignorance just diminishes the genuine and important complaints of the majority, and all they do is hurt and game and hurt the player base.I think your assessment of the people complaining as such is derogatory and wrong. Originally I had zero intentions of buying Odyssey until it was either fixed or went on sale for at least 50% off, but I'm slowly beginning to change my mind, primarily because Frontier really seems to be owning their mistakes and making an effort to right their wrongs. I've seen what it looks like when Frontier ignores problems, and Odyssey is a shiny exception to this typical behavior from FDev. So yeah, I do think Frontier will make things right, at least as right as any release finally ends up being...
I think I was fairly clear. I said...Then I think you should amend your original statement because the catch-all way you painted everyone who left a bad review is not what you intended.
You didn't specify and instead called out everyone who left a review on SteamThe reaction, and especially the reviews posted by people on Steam really do demonstrate how unbelievably stupid people can be. I mean, I sometimes wonder how people this thick are able to stand upright and feed themselves
"stupid, selfish, and childish"? I should expect to receive a broken game when I spend $40. Are you a FDev employee?I have, in many comments in this thread including my first post I said they'd completely borked the release and have to work to fix all the problems as quickly as they can. No I didn't! I was very clear. Read it again please. You didn't specify and instead called out everyone who left a review on Steam
Within 150 hours, not 24. The release was on the 19th, and the apology came on the 25th, unless I'm mistaken. If not, your lack of knowledge does not bode well for the rest of your argument. While I will admit the release of Odyssey was, it's fair to say, botched. The fact that David Braben made a public apology within twenty four hours of the launch, and the fact there have been multiple patches and updates since show a determination to make things right on Frontier's part.
People were brazenly sold an unfinished product for a premium price. They're perfectly entitled to complain, because they've paid for that right. I'm not sure why you think these complaints are a bad idea, unless you fear it could bring down the game, which is stretching things, a tad.But no, this is just what Odyssey was and clearly it was never going to be fixed, and so the thick gobby brigade posted their reviews and messages. It's quite pathetic really. Has it died down yet, as I very quickly switched off so I could read something intelligent instead![]()
No I'm someone who has made a good career in tech, has many friends and contacts at some of the largest technology companies on the planet, and who understand how the whole thing works. I highlighted people who claimed "this is clearly what the game is, what it was intended to be, and what it always will be" but nobody else. If other people want to feel swept up in that, I can't do anything about it."stupid, selfish, and childish"? I should expect to receive a broken game when I spend $40. Are you a FDev employee?
I agree, it was a huge mistake on Frontier's part and a perfect example of why the money men should never be allowed to make important policy decisions for a company. It's gonna take a long time for Frontier to regain the goodwill they lost. It'll happen, but this will never be forgotten by the player base.Problem is once you botch a release, it takes a while to regain the trust of the players. Releasing the game ahead of June's financial figures was short term gain for a huge long term loss. By the time the loss is felt, whoever made the decision likely moved on to their next tickbox exercise up the corporate ladder.
On the whole I haven't had that many issues with EOD, but I have not really been interested in the ground combat. I'm an explorer at heart. I'm not that bothered about repeated textures.
That said, the groundswell of negative opinion is legit and Frontier are entirely to blame for it. The gaming industry is chock full of shoddy workmanship, unfinished overpriced products and shady microtransactions. Frontier are just another company who think this is the normal way to do business in the gaming industry. I'm not going to single them out particularly.
The whole industry just needs a shakeup in my opinion.
And again, at NO POINT did I say every review. I said "Reviews on Steam" but you could equally assume I mean the positive ones if you want to be that general about it.Well your first clause was that it was everyone on steam that left a bad review then you said "As an example" and quoted some hyperbolic kevin the teenager.. thus painting everyone in the original clause as one and the same. I think you should amend that and make it clearer that you DON'T think it was everyone who left a negative response on steam.
