Distant Worlds 3 expedition is postponed indefinitely (from DW Project Leader Erimus)

Remember that a lof of those screenshots are using the ultraforcapture option, which is highly demanding (and apparently also gives a memory leak). And while they may be good, they are reptitive to. The ground texture is the same everywhere, just the color changes (fine powder ground). And they try to hide the stretched textures on the smoothest possible cliff ever that happen very often. A lot of world are either super duper flat with sudden elevation here and there, or the opposite, a dessicated mud planet.
The heatmap we have now is glitchy and you have numerous artifacts showing up.

And the one with the massive craters are copy pasted on many worlds.

The issue is not that the galaxy is populated by incredibly boring planets with a few "good ones", is that it's populated by numerous copy and pasted planets that have buggy features where you can see it's just a game.

Beyond the current bugs with lods and rock scattering and pattern and so on, we have others issues related to planet tech.

Exactly this. Once you see beyond the illusion you can no longer look at the galaxy the same as part of the appeal of exploring a 1:1 scale galaxy was the feeling it would be different, everywhere you looked. That feeling may be gone once Odyssey erases Horizons.

Also, sad about DW3, but the writing was on the wall last year when the DW team pretty much said they will only go again if frontier deliver something to make it worth the time and effort. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/distant-worlds-3.538774/#post-8495679

Having participated in the HUGE thread that debates this, there seems to be two sides to this story. Unfortunately my ability to comment one way or another is limited by my lack of first-hand experience. If this IS true (and unfixable), then that would quickly kill exploration for me. But I've seen enough screenshots of truly unique and breathtaking Odyssey planets to have my doubts..

I guess I'll have to wait and see when I own Odyssey myself. As for the OP, it makes sense to cancel any and all events until Odyssey is fully patched, since until then it's just a massive, messy beta. But the OP seems to go further and state that the very design and goals of Odyssey is contrary to DW ethos, and that's where I differ, at least for now.

And you are right to want to see it by yourself instead of following others opinions blindly. Myself, who have seen it, I know I've put my exploring on hold for the time being.

I very much hope they fix this. The blue sky thing is very nice, when you have one. There is a lot of promises, but we are very far away from something good as a general experience.

This is disappointing news, as with the ability to finally leave our seats and wioth a lot more to discover on planet surfaces, DW3 would have the means to be the greatest exploration event since the game's release, by many orders of magnitude.

While I am disappointed to learn it will no longer be done, it also means there is not more reason to wait and I can simply go off into the black by myself.

Sicere thanks to Erimus and everyone else who helped put together DW1 and DW2 in the past, and best of luck going on galactic exploration expeditions on Evochron Legacy lol.

There is nothing beautiful to find out there.
I, for one, am outraged. Outraged, I tell you.

30 seconds in to the video : " There is this game Star Citizen ... " - Laughed, Disliked and Blocked channel.

I remember Distant Worlds 2 - what a scam it was, when they adandon half of players just to go and turn in their Data to be on the leaderboard.

Won't miss them.
The expedition didn't abbandon any players. People just turned around on their own as they noticed it's too much for them. The organisers of the expedition didn't actually rush back to turn in anything, in fact, most of them stayed out in the black for way longer than most participants.

Some players only just returned this month from DW2, they've been out there all that time and came back in time for Odyssey [eek!].

One thing I don't understand is this strange Horizons nostalgia as if every single planet is a unique alien paradise. When I go exploring in Horizons, I ignore most of the landable planets (in that I scan them using the FSS but never bother to visit them). Seen one Horizon airless world, seen 99% of them. I make exceptions for those rare worlds that have unique features or unique orbits or unique biological life, but most planets in Horizons I find boring. And I'm okay with this, because I figure most planets in the IRL galaxy are boring, too.

My approach to Odyssey would be the same. Most planets I won't even bother traveling to, so I won't see their boringness up close. I save supercruise travel for those rare planets that look interesting, and I feel like Odyssey will have more of those than Horizons on the whole.

Maybe I'm just doing exploring wrong. If so, I'll turn in my "True Explorer" badge.

Let's make it simple. Horizon have a lot of "boring" planet. Odyssey have a lot of buggy repetitive planet where I can see the magician accomplice, and the strings above the puppet.
In one, it's just boring but still immersive. The other is boring and not immersive.

There is potential to be better, but the potential is yet to be realized.

Well the elite week video says its postponed indefinitely, so not abandoned. I'm sure once the game is running how its meant to and IF we get the planet visuals we were sold in the trailers, it'll be looked at again. Fingers crossed!
