Looks like I'm buying Odyssey....

I was recently gifted the funding to purchase Odyssey, so it won't cost me any of my own money, and yet I'm not much excited about buying it. I am curious, mainly because I just want to experience for myself all that Odyssey is and is not. I also have this vain hope that I might be able to "fix it" on some level, at least the lighting. But all in all, I'm almost grimacing at the idea of giving Frontier any money, even someone else's money, for this DLC in it's current state. I hate rewarding bad behavior. Though once I buy it, I can leave my own Steam review, so Frontier may rather I don't buy it!

I am going to try to experience Odyssey "untainted" by all the negativity surrounding it, forming my own opinions separate from the "mob". Who knows, maybe I'll end up loving Odyssey? I've seen videos and livestreams that make me think I'll be very disappointed in Odyssey, but I've also seen videos and screenshots that makes me think it's not so bad after all. Like Horizons, if I can find a subset of gameplay loops to enjoy from the "buffet" of options, that would be good.

Still, I should feel more excitement rather than apprehension about buying the "New Era" DLC from Frontier. If I hadn't been gifted the funds for this specific purpose, I would not be spending my own money on it. I think this is a pretty damning commentary on just how bad the PR around Odyssey is at the moment. Frontier, you really screwed the pooch on this release.. You can't say I didn't warn you!

I'll update this thread after I download Odyssey and play with it a little bit. I'm going to wait until the next major patch (which I hope will come out this week) before committing to this purchase. Until then I'm playing other games, because even Horizons has lost its appeal due to the overall "sadness" in the community right now.

.... One should not have buyers remorse BEFORE pressing the "buy" button ....

I hope you have a good book along. Depending on the mood of the servers, downloading 60GB might take a moment :D

I'll be downloading overnight, maybe two overnights. This is one of the reasons I'm waiting for the next big patch. Good news is that I use Steam, which has very fast download speeds (faster than my own Internet).

Yeah I couldn't be bothered to go over to steam, so usually at the mercy of their servers :D On steam 70GB would be about an hour on my internet.

Well around 9K players on steam right now, so still a lot of people playing even on a Monday, so from that perspective it’s ok, buuuut the loud voices and rightfully so are getting louder.

9k (on PC) is not something to be proud of imho....

Well, I know you enjoy beta testing and your previous work has been a god send for many Cmdr's. So I am looking forward to your objective reasoned opinion and possible suggestions for the future. (y)

It's the quiet voices I've been listening to, the ones that are normally very positive about ED but are not so positive about Odyssey. I ignore the naysayers and white knights, literally! But to your point, there have been voices who are positive about Odyssey, and they aren't the typical cheerleaders, so maybe they are right. Since performance is a huge factor regarding satisfaction, and performance seems to be RNG, maybe I'll get lucky and my rig will run Odyssey just fine.

Good luck - hope you enjoy the experience - it can be fun, and some of the views can be spectacular when it's behaving properly.

Be prepared for some bad frame rates on foot / settlements - I drop to about 40 on Ultra @1920x1080 on an RTX2060 super.
In an SRV at exactly the same place, cit can be 60+ 🤷‍♂️

It’s more than CP2077 and NMS, I don’t know when you should be proud? When your player base is happy is probably a good start.
:ROFLMAO::D CP the biggest failure this year? Really? NMS has the major player base on consoles, what are you comparing with?

Odyssey is a mixed bag, let’s just say I’m having fun, however it comes with a caveat, I like to play with broken toys.

I wouldn't suggest your even spending someone else's money on Odyssey when your laptop can only just make horizons in VR. It will be a disappointment...
Although, as you appear to have me on ignore (wise choice) you, of course, won't get to read this advice. I hope you are fortunate and can run Odyssey in its current state, but I doubt it.

Even though you're not shelling out your own money for Ody...it's still the same crap we all know, so you'll be disappointed anyway.
My sincere hope is that it won't be crap forever.

One thing that has been bothering me is that as I look at DLC for other games, it seems that Frontier has their pricing model flipped upside-down. Most games I play charge the higher price for the core game and a very modest price for the DLC, unlike Frontier which is charging more for Odyssey than Horizons. Even if Odyssey ends up being fixed 100%, I'm not sure there's $40 worth of new content there. Sure, there may be $40 of effort put into the game by developers (a LOT of work went into modeling interiors), but from a player's (or at least this player's) perspective, it feels like maybe $20 of gameplay at most. 🤷‍♂️

Duck, Can I suggest you wait till Friday and see what the roadmap says? If you like what's on the roadmap, buy the game then as an endorsement of the new message, if you don't like the roadmap, maintain your vigelence. I bought Odyssey to get access to the VR to make an informed decision, and in many respects I regret doing it. Now that it's not a pre-order, you won't be getting the pioneer skin, so there is nothing to lose or create FOMO by stalling.
