Looks like I'm buying Odyssey....

Yeah, but point is the 9,000 or so playing 1.6 are the holdouts. The real number of people playing CS atm is 750k and they're in Global Operations. Elite is only in the same league as the holdouts.
The real question how many was playing ED before EDO a year ago, 2 years ago, the numbers regarding CS was just a pick from the list.

What's your recipe? Free Carrier, free Odyssey... don't tell me you are nice to people or something. Can't do that. Will have to keep paying myself then :p
LOL, I have no idea. I'm actually more of a grump than a nice guy (at least on the forum). Meanwhile Obsidian Ant is the Mr. Rogers of Elite Dangerous, and all he gets is grief.

To be honest though, I did say something to the effect of "I'm not buying Odyssey, but if someone wants to gift it to me, then I'll play with it." on my mod thread. I didn't actually expect anything from it, but there seems to be a subset of players who really like my Immersion Mod and are looking forward to an Odyssey-compatible version, which I cannot do without Odyssey. I was kinda floored when people started gifting me actual cash. On the other hand, OA and other Youtubers have a "donate" button on their streams, so I guess this is the 21st Century way of leaving tips in a jar. I'm definitely not complaining about the generosity! I just wish that I was more excited about the thing I'm going to spend that generosity on..

You probably have me on ignore as well but I'll respond to this as I thought about this last night when playing the game, and touching upon it with @Rubbernuke.

There is a LOT of copy/paste in EDO, even more so than the base game. You have 1 layout each for Starport, Outpost and Planetary Port; you see the same pieces of garbage at exactly the same places (I believe this is state/security dependent?). A tube there, a pizza box there. Copy/paste. The mission NPCs (who stand in exactly the same spots, everywhere) give me the same handful of lines each time I pass them - top 1% anyone?

The shops are the exact same layout and look, the bar looks the same. The only difference is some slight colour variation, maybe a different banner (PP related usually). Weapon choice, while broad enough, isn't as varied as in other games.

The settlements show a certain level of variation but I still think they're all the same layouts i.e. 27 of them (?) in total - but they use the same building blocks so visually they're extremely similar in their appearance. The visual fidelity is alright - not fantastic, or even great. Just alright for a game in 2021. It's good enough from an immersion viewpoint for me, but there's a lot of repetition.

What I'm trying to (long-windedly) say is, I'm not sure how much work it really was to come up with all that - if I compare this with Night City (CP2077) or any Bethesda or Rockstar map (interior and exterior environments), it's rather on the light side of things in terms of variation and detail.
The trump card would have been / might still be the BGS and its effects visually and gameplay wise on the concourse.

I mean, can we visit one on fire? Does lockdown shutter it all and cops walk about?

Again, concurrent server numbers are essentially back to pre-launch levels. Easy to assume its basically the same people who just keep playing Elite again, especially since no one has a better breakdown anyway.

Certainly the Steam forums are almost back to its pre-launch status - with the same couple of people jumping on every new post hoping for a long term recruit; but largely failing to keep them hooked for more than a few days or weeks.

I just added one more example to my post - if they don't bother with that mundane level of detail I very much doubt they'll deliver any of the above. Sad but true.

PS: And I've visited a burning station already - can't disembark. Because there's nothing added. It got the FC treatment, just like all the Horizons-only planetary POIs, where there's no additional on-foot gameplay added either (I checked). Not even a single panel to cut open for a few mats even.

PS PS: That's not to say they couldn't add it later, but quite frankly I've had enough of 'later' especially given this is supposed to be a WYSIWYG expansion. And with all the issues they need to sort out to even stabilise the game I'm doubtful there will be a 'soon (tm)' in the true sense of the word. They couldn't even be bothered to fix ship details such as the Cutter stairs; although I'm able to walk straight through the DBX's thrusters so there's that.

Wait, so you've left these points and opinions around and you've never tried the game yet?..
This world loses its position in surprising me.
I don't need to drive a car to say, "That's the ugliest paint job I've ever seen!" or "Why did they switch the gas and brake pedals?" Things like the UI can be proven demonstratively bad (IMO) based video evidence alone.

According to your logic, a jury would have to be stacked with murderers to convict someone of murder... 🤦‍♂️

Oh I agree, the fallout didn’t manifest yet, I’m sure that if they push for launch on consoles and it’s still very bugged, people will just leave as we already see from some of the old community guards. They need to turn this boat around now for sure!

FD, if you take away anything from EDOs launch and ED in general, its this.

What is kind of surprising me is that there's a time window of several days (1 or 2 weeks? I'd need to check) between the announcement of the road map and the delivery of the same.

If Frontier planned to push out the release knowing all the issues with a view to fix them afterwards, wouldn't they already have come up with a road map even prior to release? Maybe I'm overthinking this but it doesn't give me the impression that they're in control of the situation. We'll see how detailed it is on Friday anyways, should be a decent indicator of how organised they are about it.

My favorite metaphor is "I'm not a pilot, but if I see a helicopter in a tree I know something ain't right." 😁

I was recently gifted the funding to purchase Odyssey, so it won't cost me any of my own money, and yet I'm not much excited about buying it. I am curious, mainly because I just want to experience for myself all that Odyssey is and is not. I also have this vain hope that I might be able to "fix it" on some level, at least the lighting. But all in all, I'm almost grimacing at the idea of giving Frontier any money, even someone else's money, for this DLC in it's current state. I hate rewarding bad behavior. Though once I buy it, I can leave my own Steam review, so Frontier may rather I don't buy it!

I am going to try to experience Odyssey "untainted" by all the negativity surrounding it, forming my own opinions separate from the "mob". Who knows, maybe I'll end up loving Odyssey? I've seen videos and livestreams that make me think I'll be very disappointed in Odyssey, but I've also seen videos and screenshots that makes me think it's not so bad after all. Like Horizons, if I can find a subset of gameplay loops to enjoy from the "buffet" of options, that would be good.

Still, I should feel more excitement rather than apprehension about buying the "New Era" DLC from Frontier. If I hadn't been gifted the funds for this specific purpose, I would not be spending my own money on it. I think this is a pretty damning commentary on just how bad the PR around Odyssey is at the moment. Frontier, you really screwed the pooch on this release.. You can't say I didn't warn you!

I'll update this thread after I download Odyssey and play with it a little bit. I'm going to wait until the next major patch (which I hope will come out this week) before committing to this purchase. Until then I'm playing other games, because even Horizons has lost its appeal due to the overall "sadness" in the community right now.

.... One should not have buyers remorse BEFORE pressing the "buy" button ....
Best make a bucket list containing every single bug and glitch and issue that has been mentioned and then check them all out focusing entirely on that task!

(That was a joke. Don't do that.)

That also made me very sad. No Odyssey content at old POIs (with the exception of one SRV wreck that had a panel to cut and loot).

Ok, so now I've got the point why someone will not buy a game because of negative reviews instead of trying and forming own opinion. Thanks!)

I hope you enjoy but I am not sure reshaders will work this time. but worth a try
I'll be custom editing individual pixel shaders at the code level, which is way more powerful and flexible than reshade. That said, there's only so much one can do with pixel shaders. Lighting issues can in theory be fixed this way, but things like planetary tech, LOD pop-in, culling, etc. are "out of reach".

I might be able to increase performance by switching off certain shaders as well. For example, if the concourse and people in it have dedicated shaders, switching those off should make flying in and out of the station much smoother (better fps). This means manually toggling those on and off depending if I'm on foot or not, so it would just be a stopgap until Frontier fixes things on their end, but it's better than nothing.
