Ships Whats your guys ship of choice for general planetary ops?

I repurposed a Krait II. I'm not going to be engineering the missiles. I'm not seeing a need for it.

The missiles do turn the base hostile. I do turn off the base defenses before I leave. She was originally built as a CZ warship and she laughs at the system defense force ship(s) that may show up when she leaves.

I also agree whole heartedly to whom ever said 'don't park at the base'. I had to rebuy my DBX because I didn't realize that scavengers could take a ship out so quickly. That's when I changed directions.

So.. which is better(*) a single missile, or a single pack?
Packhound cannot be fired on something without have it locked in targeting. They are good against some tougher threats which shows at least for some time as "target" for ship. Dumbfires on the other hand can be fired anytime and are perfect for destroying on foot NPCs due explosions (area damage). On foot NPCs are really hard to hit with ship weapons because you cannot lock aim on them. It is possible, I killed one with imperial hammer, but it was more luck as something else.

Boo! I was hoping for the equivalent of shotgun missiles :)

I found fixed beams quite useful, but you still have to hit them and they dodge, and you hit them and they dodge, and you hit them and they fall over.
Compare to Missile, missile, oh look they flew around and don't get up.

Dat rearside 🥳

Using a DBX for now...

Whats your guys ship of choice for general planetary ops? Lets say a ship specifically made for going to settlements to do missions/attack them, for impact sites and other general odyssey gameplay.
Personally for planetary ops I like having 2 dumbfire missile racks, SRV hangar, detailed surface scanner, docking PC(for when I wanna go to the bathroom IRL, get some water, or just plain old feeling lazy) and optionally a guardian frame shift drive booster since less jumps to get to places is nice.
Im using phantom atm, good jump range, alot of optionals for everything I could ever want, not too large. But I was thinking about using a small ship since I like that they are easyer to find even ground to land on and I like how many of them look and fly in general ^_^.

Annyways Im curious what do you CMDRs prefer?
Keelback

I use this for conflict zones and annoying scav bases. May or may not be a bit overkill.

The flak launchers can be swapped out for mines if you'd prefer those. Don't put mines on the large or small hardpoints if you're gonna be making bombing runs though.

shakes head No such thing as overkill. 'Always cheat; always win. If you walk away, it was a fair fight. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.'

Probably not the most efficient use of a Chieftain, but I just love the dropship design of this ship. Put some dumbfires and frags on it for the heck of it. Also comes with a 4G SRV hangar in case surface mission can eventually be done in a team

I'm using a Dolphin I put together for ground missions.

42 Light years on the trot with twin High Capacity Oversized dumb-fire launchers. Fast charging Bi-Weaves and a surprising amount of hull.
The flat bottom also makes it easy to simply pancake your opponents.

I want some cargo (might as well earn a bit from settlement trading if you are going there), supercruise assist and advanced docking computer because it's convenient, surface scanner to find POI, shields, SRV, a guardian shield booster, collector limpets for any high-grade USS on the way, a fuel scoop. Added a passenger bay for completeness. Being able to land on small pads is also a big plus.

So that means a cobra MK4, which is able to deal with the elite ranked NPCs hunting me all the time. Alternatives would mostly be a Dolphin (combat...) or Viper MK4 (wanted slightly more optionals...).

A different ship for a change. ;)

For Horizons I usually ran an Adder, Odyssey its varied, but been a DBS for a while - i got used to one for some space activities, 4 hardpoints, 4 utils, just about enough optionals, enough jumprange for bubble antics..

Been working on a Keelback recently too, a friend was talking about trying the game again as a ground-walker, and it gives the SLF option for fun/fire support.
