Looks like I'm buying Odyssey....

I'm kind of hoping the road map actually acknowledges what an unmitigated disaster this release has been.

This is the first 'MMO' style game I've bought in a while (and the first pre-order and non discount steam purchase in about 8 years), and whether I carry on playing it long term, or just get my money's worth from the fifty quid I dropped on it and move on is really going to hinge on what kind of attitude F-Dev adopts to their mistakes and what (if any) commitments they make after the fact. So far I'm leaning heavily towards the former option - which is disappointing.
I'm too heavily 'invested' both financially and emotionally (and the game is still what I want to play, even in its current state, over all the other stuff I have in my library) to walk away from it.

I am however thinking whether I should go and head out into the black for a while until the bubble related EDO gameplay gets some TLC. Not sure how much mileage I get out of looking at planets and plants, but that seems to be the least buggy part of the DLC right now. I was hoping a few weeks ago that I might get my teeth into BGS stuff (since there's a lot more variety now on the mission board) but I've cooled on that idea significantly.

Just as an aside, apart from my burning myself to a crispy cinder, my trip out from Colonia included visiting a few differing bodies along the way, just like Horizons most have no 'wow' factor, but the atmo bodies I have found worth looking around and then going back to orbit and dropping elsewhere, the changes in terrain and textures alone can be very surprising.

There is also a lot more Bio to be found in Odyssey than in Horizons, and the Geo looks much better also.

The really disappointing thing for me is that I really WANT to have that emotional investment (financial, not so much, but then I am both skint and tight); irrespective of what Star Citizen claims to be, this feels like the spiritual successor to Freelancer I've been looking for.

Fortunately because this is all new there's a hell of a lot for me to do (like exploring) that will avoid most of the issues, so at the very least I can get my money's worth.

Without trying to derail the thread, but do you know if they fixed the bug where all raw mats that spawn at geo sites yield the same material only? If they fixed that I might actually head out somewhere towards the fringes maybe as I've never been there before.

With the gamma setting things don't look as awfully dark as they could (even though there's still a lot to be fixed in terms of visuals), which was another reason that held me back going out and finding & looking at pretty stuff.

Well, that bit should be no problem, a little independent thinking (some of it lateral, of course!) about what you actually enjoy doing can have you involved in the game for literally thousands of hours, without even noticing it...

Don't chase after "All G5 Engineered by next Tuesday" and just play, you still get the engineering, it just takes a little longer. ;)

This ^^

Never try to rush anything in Elite, most things come naturally while you play. Just don't think you have to hunt for the highest gear etc, there is no need for it (except perhaps you want to play heavily in the PvP area...)

I don't know, my bubble account has been collecting Odyssey mats while trying out new weapons / suits today and my Colonia account lost the SRV. I won't be back to Colonia until tomorrow, but will comment soon after I re-equip!

You know, I've been thinking about this quite often over the past few weeks - what if I was a completely new player who never experienced Elite/Horizons before?

I soldiered on and through the release phase of CP2077 - while it had a lot of issues I could still appreciate the stuff that worked - namely the main story - and I had a good time completing it, even before the first major patches landed.

I'm particularly bitter at the moment over EDO because Horizons was very stable, it played smoothly, looked & felt great, the UI largely worked, it was just missing the legs stuff and the new planet tech (which is very hit & miss in my experience, although I would say on balance it does look better).

Not sure if I were as sour grapes without most of my cosmetics (that I spent hundreds of Euros on) being broken as well on top of that and various other regressions and reintroductions of bugs that were fixed in the past.

It's just very frustrating to go one step ahead and two steps backwards when it comes to this, and it certainly isn't the first time - Frontier seem to be very reluctant to learn from past mistakes.

Cheers - I'll go and check this myself later when I'm back in the game... I'm fairly well stocked with mats in general incl. raw, but it would be nice if the gathering part worked as intended as it being broken would just annoy me, as that is one of the few things you can still do when out and about in the middle of nowhere, and I quite enjoy mat prospecting in the SRV.

11 pages and counting...
This is turning into something worse than a bad episode of EastEnders (not that there are any good ones :) )

Make up your mind, give it a go, and post an objective review. If you don't think it's ready for review yet, then fair enough, however unless you give it a try, you can't make a proper decision, you can only base your opinions on other peoples, and they tend to vary from extreme love to extreme hatred, with a few rational people in between. There are a lot of people with a lot of agendas (sadly).

Grasp the nettle, give it a go and form your own opinion.

If you think its rubbish, then fair enough - as long as you state why, and do it objectively, then I would hope everyone will respect your opinion. Please don't do like a lot of post, who just find something to hate about it, and then start accusing Fdev, the developers / whoever of being useless, lazy etc etc. Just state what you think is wrong, and why.

I like the game, but am happy to admit it has major failings at the minute - Frame rates (now improved but a long way to go), and lots of other bugs that seem to have emerged - some trivial, some which should never have got out of the door. It's not in a good state, but is luckily for me quite playable - but NOT in VR.

TLDR; Try it, write own opinion base on experience, be polite.

P.S. I'm going to give VR a go tomorrow, so will see how it goes - not too hopeful, but you never know :)

Aye, and this is true for EDH as well. Beelining for "all G5, all the way" WILL burn you out. Sounds like that hasn't changed in EDO, and why should it?

Full disclosure, though: I DID grind hard for the all-important FSD upgrade as well as the important Guardian tech, but after that I've been playing "pick up everything when you get a chance. Pretty soon you'll find you have everything you need for something you want, and it won't feel like a "grind" along the way because you'll just pick it up as you go along, doing the things that your current kit is capable of. It's not like there aren't multiple ways of getting all of those mats.

But yes, if you absolutely have to have those dirty drives on all of your ships and you have to have them NAOW, then have fun spending a week or tow hunting Pharmaceutical Isolators. Just know that you're bringing it on yourself.

Sounds like it's the same in EDO. Can't confirm as I don't own it. YET. I surely will as soon as it no longer requires a NASA quantum computer to run at Horizons levels.

Think positive! They have surely read José Raúl Capablanca's bon mot on how to become a good chess player: "You don't learn anything from winning a game. It is the lost games from which you learn, and you have to lose hundreds of games before you can become a good chess player".

In this sense FDev is on a good way. 🤓
In that case I would say FDev are aiming to become the best loser :p

I could pull my hair out when I see the constant fumbling - it really does look like they're struggling to be in control of their own product, possibly due to staff turnover over the past few years. Those Glassdoor reviews (to be taken with a pinch of salt as always) do make a lot of sense in the context of what we can see in the 'final' product.

My favourite is a line from their shareholder material:
"Our goal is to be the most respected entertainment company in the world".

No joke, direct citation.

I think these cover it.

  • A fix has been made for Crystalline Shard mineable assets not spawning.
  • A fix has been made for Mineables on Legacy organics/geologicals spawning in incorrect locations/with incorrect rotations.

Strangely worded and a little vague though.

Oh don't worry, to date I have wiped my save three times because:
  1. I did the road to riches by website meta game to afford my first AspX (I realised I could do this by just running trade missions and scanning stuff on the way to the Hesperus, and had way more fun doing so)
  2. When Odysee dropped I got (unearned, due to a bug) access to a bunch of engineers and this really messed with my sense of progression.
  3. I took a bunch of (to my mind, bugged) fetch-and-carry source 2m cr trade goods for ~25m reward missions and leapfrogged from a type 6 to a krait phantom without passing Go (the AspX) and thus spoiled my own sense of progression.
Won't be rushing anything haha

I could never wipe my 7+ year main, I grew too attached to her :D

Was still painful even with less than 100 hours in the game.

I'm not used to persistent save games (you'll never catch me playing in iron-man mode, and I am a serial quick save/loader) and it's taken me this long to get used to just rolling with mistakes - I doubt I'll wipe again.

@Old Duck Today's update does not really rise my hopes...

Perhaps better take it to the X4 add-ons?

Speaking of wiping saves, do I need to start my X4 save over to enjoy the new content in the X4 DLC? I suspect I would for any story mode stuff, but could I visit Sol and see Terran ships with the "Cradle Of Humanity" DLC from my current game save?
