Hiding and cover isn't the issue-- That can be fun in fast paced games--Halo was a fast paced game with a quick shield recharge--Halo had cover built into the maps-this was well thought out--the combat was based specifically around the few maps they had--it was tested and tweaked constantly--the maps weren't procedurally generated encounters like elite--Shield regen also had an iconic sound-you knew when your shields were up and ready to go- You're also talking about a console game that came out 100 years ago.
