ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous | Odyssey: Roadmap

It was a roadmap for the fixes, not for content.
“We are gonna fix “stuff” and “things” the next 3 weeks then gotta buckle down on console b/c they have a higher release standard” is the summary of the roadmap.

This was their chance at being specific... and FDev should also be trying to hype up stuff to offset the crap we’ve been given.

Its a simple marketing strategy for customer retention.

...That's it? Just three things with a couple of vague bullet points for each? I see that section about communication, how you want to communicate better. Well, this is not the way you do it by being vague and typing up a few vague paragraphs to go around it about support or whatever. Why don't you tell us what you're focusing on fixing, how well you believe the problem will be improved, or exactly what changes you're making. Something more than a couple of paragraphs with vague statements. There's a whole lot of words that say a whole lot of nothing.

Thanks for the roadmap.

I assume this first section means that Odyssey isn't expected to be in a full release quality state (with all performance issues and bugs fixed) until console release?
I'm surprised that you would say that, Ant. You're usually measured and considered but that seems needlessly negative to me. I'm sure you get the majority vote (and you're welcome to it) but I think you've gone overboard, here and on youtube.

My take: Odyssey has some serious problems, although luckily for me, I've found it very playable. FD have unintentionally messed up but have owned up and taken it on the chin, and it seems to me are busting a gut, to make things right. I've never been slow in criticising FD when I think they deserve it, but it seems to me now is the time to recognise their dedication to fixing the problems, and encourage them - it's not the time to put the boot in, like a negativitiy cheerleader.

Planetary geometry and lighting is a topic that we know is close to the hearts of many of our explorers
More precisely, it's a feature that is broken in the game. It's not some nebulous emotional response by your players.

Secondly, 'many improvements and features' is not a roadmap - it barely functions as a platitude.

Sincerely, I wish you all the very best of luck with your Odyssey (both the players and the developers alike) but it now looks like it really is going to be a long journey to Ithaca, far across the wine-dark sea...

While we are expecting to see specific and targeted performance improvements in the upcoming June updates, we are also aware that development work for console will allow for even larger performance optimisations and enhancements for PC too. Therefore, we feel the best approach for all our Commanders will be to focus our development efforts after Update 5 on performance and the console release

Console release date is supposed to be somewhere in Autumn right ? update 5 is 24 June so I would guess "after update 5" is starting in July, Autumn start in September; so supposedly there is at least 2 full months to work on the optimizations.

So what are you saying exactly ? As you work on the console version, you will also optimize the PC version and release patches during that time ?
Based on your track record and the state of Odyssey, I'm just going to guess and say console version is going to be released within 2 to 7 months, between September 2021 and April 2022; so basically we PC players are forced to wait for the optimizations without actually knowing when it's going to be done.

See, this is pure PR talk, if you actually take the time to read what they say, you need to think and find the pieces, then think again and again, and even after you did that; it's still extremely vague and you realize they actually didn't say much, it's just empty and vague.

@FrontierDev Can we at least have the ability to turn fire and steam off while you figure the optimizations out. Fire and Steam are killing my FPS hard...

We didn't receive a lot of information.. we only now that once a week there will be a patch.. but how will they change the ui for example? What feedback will be considered and what can't be integrated over the many suggestions provided?
They're currently harvesting opinions on those. There's a thread on map feedback, and they'll implement the suggestions that make sense in patch 5. There's currently a thread for outfitting, I assume those suggestions will be addressed in a future patch.

Think at this point we're looking at weekly patches for the next two months, and then that'll be that while they work on the console side (which HOPEFULLY will have additional improvements, and then this @#$$# beta period will be over)
