ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous | Odyssey: Roadmap

I really pull for you guys but this feels like a disappointment to me.

Why in the world won't you talk AT ALL about the huge discrepancy between space darkness in Horizons and Odyssey? There has been no sharing from you on whether it's intended or bugged, and if the former what the thinking behind it is. It has basically been radio silence and the only hint we get for anything to do with lighting seems to have to do with planets, which I don't think anyone is complaining about. I find this very strange, the communication in this area is completely lacking and I can't understand why.

If something is broken and you're still trying to figure it out, just say so! "Looking into ..." What??

If you've made a conscious decision to make everything darker, to remove the dust in space and make nebula hardly visible, just say so! And let the debate begin.

Why the secrecy? It's mind boggling and very frustrating. And a bit ironic given your last few sentences about improved communication. Come on guys, you're better than this.

I won't even get into that last bit about stopping PC updates to focus on the console release. It's obvious by now that the PC release was a beta. I wish you'd just come out and admit that, too. Really disappointing series of decisions over the last few months.

It's a roadmap of the major changes and fixes to odyssey they intend to implement over the new few weeks.

What's the issue?
Maybe that people were led to believe this would be a finished product on release and now being told it will not be for some time. I imagine everyone is happy with being told they have to wait for what was promised on the 19th May 2021.

This is not a road map this is a snagging list.

There's going to be another roadmap after update 5 right? First roadmap I've seen that is only a few weeks out. Most roadmaps include an entire month at a time and do multiple months at a time. Using specific dates is a terrible, horrible idea and is only setting yourselves up for failure.
Well you can't plan too long until you're out of alpha, and kinda have to meet those dates with those features, to enter the beta/optimization phase.

So the roadmap is ok, i'm sure it's the best they could do at this time, and actually they've been more talkative than i expected

... Therefore, we feel the best approach for all our Commanders will be to focus our development efforts after Update 5 on performance and the console release...
Guys...
This doesn't mean that after Patch 5 they're dropping everything to work on the console release, just that after Patch 5, their focus is going to be on performance improvements, and the console release, rather than, say, the UI.

This is not enough.

You might as well have just said, "Bug fixes through June. Still trying to push console, ready or not."

Sure, it tells us what you're going to do with the next few updates. But it doesn't tell us where Elite is going, what features are coming next, exactly WHAT is going to be done to address the gameplay concerns (planet tech, exploration, etc). Where will Elite stand in a year from now? How long before we know of state of the actual vision and plans for this game? This "roadmap" is pretty disappointing honestly, and clearly leaves a lot of us to believe that there is no real plan.

This is too generic of an answer to all the issues with the gameplay that have been brought up. We need more than this.

I appreciate this post, and the work being put in. Thanks to all developers working long hours. I'm a bit worried because the last update made my ship start disappearing and the station interiors flicker. Once there was a solid grey wall where the lift entrance should be. If there won't be another patch for a week, I'm tempted to use the word the word "unplayable" for the first time, although I'll give the environs on planets one more test before I do that.

C'mon guys sooner or later I hope we will get what we deserve, let's ease the pressure it's Friday, and the people working at FD aren't totally guilty. Bad decisions, and terrible outcomes are part of the human history. This is what makes us great.

If everything goes well finally one day we will remember odyssey launch laughing and then I hope we finally learned the lesson about pre ordering.

If everything goes wrong, it will go wrong for FD too. And probably someone will launch a better game.

In the meantime...

We became more close to each other as a community. And that's good. Let's continue sharing the grief. 🤣
This seems a very zen reponse.
Like saying "in 200 years we will all be dust"
O.K. perhaps not exactly that :D

Given all the emphasis that has been placed on this communication in recent days, the result is truly a disgrace.
No mention of gameplay improvements.
There is not a single mention of a restyling of the old missions and powerplay.
No mention of how disconnected the missions are from the in-game assets. I mention the new planetary missions with the objective of shooting down 12 drones in a specific base. How many drones are there? ONE. And then the usual gameplay log out log in x another 11 times.
No mention of on foot missions linked to specific BGS states.
No mention of new missions with your own ship in scanning a stupid megaship with the sole objective of going back and forth from one system to another. This is gameplay?
I forgot... the DNA collection aspect and how it's totally disconnected from missions, assets and BGS.
Yet another wasted opportunity.
I think you'll get less and less likes on your useless streams to reward useless screenshots.
Go on like this and you will make Elite sunset.
This communication of yours borders on the ridiculous.

Yes, it's a snagging list roadmap.

I'm rarely serious when I post here, but I'm actually wondering what people were expecting? A development roadmap instead of a snagging roadmap? Why would that be likely/possible at this point.

We'll you've delivered as promised but it's hardly a road map. This gives very little information and what makes things worse you highlight that you intend to review how you're going to improve comms ( Rather ironic don't you think) No disrespect to Arthur who's in the firing line but I want a developer to highlight the issues and why we've bought an update which is not fit for purpose. Covid is not an acceptable excuse. You were highlighting these updates back in 2017 in London (4 years ago)

I could forgive this at the start of the venture, and did, but it's not acceptable now for you to use players as QA testers.

Can you be once be honest and be up front for a change rather than alienating your fan base..

I think my post was in english. Paraphrasing however this tells me only that they intend to work on a few missing features and UI tweaks over the next few weeks and "other stuff" and maybe some "performance stuff". If that strikes you as a roadmap of anything... so be it. It does at least inform us that there are three more weeks of updates coming but after that just 'console launch'.

It was an honest question (referred to in another post following it) as the impression I got form the roadmap was that following Patch 5 the focus was on getting performance to a state where it would run on last-gen consoles (and low-end PC's)

I'm not particualry bleating about performance, but run in 4K as standard and having some unpredicatability in framerates: I could drop to 2560*1440 (I do for CZs) and get a reasonable boost, but some fuzziness on screen as a result. 1080p on my monitor is very fuzzy...
That's the difference then for me. I had a tiny custom built CRT for years and years (which was insanely hazardous actually).. I used to play Team Fortress 2 on it. Now, I'm totally happy with a 32" 1080p monitor right in my face...

I must never expose myself to 4k I see, or my simple adulation of this low resolution setup shall become as unremarkable to me as the tasteless acquisitions made in yesteryears mall. Alas, Avarice, and the bane of ashes that pursue his every step. But that is unrelated, I don't mean that having a 4k monitor is avaristic, lol :)

It was never supposed to be feature road map.
