The 'road map' is just them admitting they released a beta product. If they had been honest and advertised it as one, instead of a AAA full release game with those misleading livestreams and fancy videos, and instead (like they did in alpha) simply charged everyone a nominal fee to test it for them for the next 6 months until consoles are ready, there wouldn't be a fraction of the anger.

No one paid $50 in good faith, just to end up being beta testers for the next few months. We were lied to and mislead, and the trust that many players had with Frontier has been lost. Only fools will believe a word the say from now on.

Thanks for the roadmap, it's pretty much as low as my expectations so no disappointements from my side. But if you want a tip from a long time white knight who has lot's of experience with CMs failing to adress peoples concerns:
Starting with a monthly community update, we will highlight and share the progress that the development team have been making over that month. We will be sharing more details around this, and other initiatives, over the coming weeks.
I hope that means progress the development teams has made over that month for future content? It doesn't mean it's just a recap of the stuff that was added as updates over that month? I am asking because I've seen that approach from other developers and it completely misses the point. We don't want to know what you added to the game. We already know that because we are F5ing the forums as soon as a patch is announced. There is no point in telling us what you have done, because most of the time we probably know better than your own development team ("fixed that" / "no, you didn't" is a common patch thread reply...). So please don't make that mistake and don't tell us stuff we already know, tell us about your plans for the future, and most importantly, listen to the things we have to say regarding your plans.

I really love the game and unlike some others I can see the amount of work that already went into Odyssey, but it's pretty clear that it needs much more work.

While we are expecting to see specific and targeted performance improvements in the upcoming June updates, we are also aware that development work for console will allow for even larger performance optimisations and enhancements for PC too. Therefore, we feel the best approach for all our Commanders will be to focus our development efforts after Update 5 on performance and the console release, and to bring our multi-platform community together once more
If FDEV were really serious about this, then please ask the project managers "why not add cross-play?"

Its 2021 and this game is being left behind.

Sincerely, I wish you all the very best of luck with your Odyssey (both the players and the developers alike) but it now looks like it really is going to be a long journey to Ithaca, far across the wine-dark sea...
Possibly with only one survivor. And we all know who that will be... ;-)

Yeah, well. The name-calling is for pre-school anyway.
I'm not having performance issues, so my personal frustration with Odyssey is almost nonexistent.
I totally get it though. Bad performance is one of the few things that can really make a good game bad for me.
I'm not having performance issues in 2d either, but I feel for those who are. As long as the first 3 updates get up to 60fps at 1080 for their recommended spec, then jobs a good un.

I'm personally having a great time in odyssey, and love the update, but obviously other peoples experiences vary. Anyway enough typing, back to flying and walking

Greetings Commanders,

As mentioned in David’s forum post on 25th May, we would like to share our immediate roadmap for Odyssey and talk a little more about performance and improvements as we move towards the console release later this year.

We’d like to take a moment to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we review your reports and feedback. We’ve been working hard to address critical issues - Update 2 went live yesterday, which followed Update 1, the previous 2 hotfix updates and server and stability fixes deployed in May. We have been seeing some awesome content shining through from Odyssey, but we know there’s still work to be done to make the experience as good as it can and to further address feedback.

To that end, here’s a short summary of our immediate roadmap of updates and the key focuses within them.

  • Update 3 – Thursday 10th June
    • Many improvements and fixes, including
    • Loadout UI flow changes
    • Adding earned ARX for on-foot gameplay
  • Update 4 – Thursday 17th June
    • Many improvements and fixes, including
    • Suit Livery UI flow changes
    • Codex CMDR stats
  • Update 5 – Thursday 24th June
    • Many improvements and fixes, including
    • Shared missions
    • Galaxy & system map UI updates
    • Outfitting UI updates
Each of Updates 3 to 5 will be of a similar size to Updates 1 and 2, and contain fixes and enhancements to the overall Odyssey player experience, including incremental performance issues for specific circumstances and/or system configurations.

Planetary geometry and lighting is a topic that we know is close to the hearts of many of our explorers, and is something we are looking carefully at. We will of course, continue to update you over the coming weeks as those investigations progress.

While we are expecting to see specific and targeted performance improvements in the upcoming June updates, we are also aware that development work for console will allow for even larger performance optimisations and enhancements for PC too. Therefore, we feel the best approach for all our Commanders will be to focus our development efforts after Update 5 on performance and the console release, and to bring our multi-platform community together once more, which will also allow us to bring even more global optimisation changes and updates to all Elite Dangerous Commanders.

Finally, we would also like to address the topic of communication. We are aware that many of you have been asking about greater communication, visibility and a change on how we share and update Elite Dangerous moving forward. While we do always try to give as clear a vision for the future as possible, such as Horizons or Beyond season roadmaps, we also must accept that this alone has not hit the mark. Our community have always been the beating heart of Elite Dangerous and we take the feedback very seriously. We are going to be working on new plans and initiatives that we can do to bring you even more in touch with our development progress. Starting with a monthly community update, we will highlight and share the progress that the development team have been making over that month. We will be sharing more details around this, and other initiatives, over the coming weeks.

Once again, we would like to thank you all for your patience, understanding and support as we continue to work hard to unlock the great potential of Odyssey for all Commanders.

Many improvements and fixes... na moral!!

Thank you the entire FDev team! Sounds like steps in the right direction. Being a humble person I only have the average 1050ti and I've been having a heck of a time getting consistent FPS. But what I can play is fun and engaging. It really makes me excited to see the end product. Like horizons eventually when it's all "done" it will feel like a natural and integral part of the game.

Therefore, we feel the best approach for all our Commanders will be to focus our development efforts after Update 5 on performance and the console release
Uh.. what? So this Games as a service game is just being abandoned for 6-12 months after PC players paid for it so that it can sell more copies on console? Not a good look and not a good move, classic fdev way..

Edit: Don't get me wrong if somehow they magically make the game they said they were in 3 patches spread across 20 days by all means, but lets be real, Horizon's bugs went unfixed for months (anyone remember core mining?) why should we expect odyssey will be any different.

"we feel the best approach for all our Commanders will be to focus our development efforts after Update 5 on performance and the console release"

This will destroy the game, waiting this long to fix the primary issue should be unacceptable to EVERYONE. Sad that we even have to be here as all this should have never happened.
Please define the primary issue.
The game will be destroyed not by Frontier but by those who expect bugs to be fixed when there is probably a lot of work to be done for console versions which may well impact the PC based game. It's riduculous to implement a fix for something that is quite likely to change.
One man's primary issue could well be insignificant to others. I personally have no serious issues with the game although some design elements are poor. These are fixable and by adopting an overall perspective not game breaking.
We are were we are for whatever reason, and the negativity expressed by many is not going to help Frontier to progress.

I must say, I see some improvements. Performance issues are a big problem now but I must say, game is moving forward and that is important.

There's going to be another roadmap after update 5 right? First roadmap I've seen that is only a few weeks out. Most roadmaps include an entire month at a time and do multiple months at a time. Using specific dates is a terrible, horrible idea and is only setting yourselves up for failure.

Does this mean that once Update 5 drops that there will be no further optimisation on PC until Consoles are ready to receive Odyssey?
My GPU is runnig at 101.5% power usage constantly in Odyssey... Yet framerates are low...
No I think it means the best way to further optimize the PC client will be through universal optimizations, which must be part and parcel to the console clients. Also, I'm willing to put up with wonkiness on a PC because I know it will be resolved (at least in this case), but on a console my patience for trashy performance is less than nil.

My client runs great... I wish I knew what is causing crappy FPS on so many systems, really. And I'm sure that the people trying to resolve the problem are in the same boat. For instance, my phone, a Pixel tiny edition, works great. My mom's phone, a Pixel tiny edition, causes me to pull my hair out very often.

I'm absolutely not saying it's user error, but I am saying that the task of trying to fix another system that should be working when yours is fine sounds like a terrible nightmare at the scales Frontier is dealing with, but then I am not a developer. Hopefully I'm sure they're used to this.
