Newcomer / Intro Wing and multi-crew changes

Greetings Commanders.

With the release of Odyssey I was wondering if we should expect changes to the way that wings and Multi-crew work.

I recently bought the base game for some of my friends when it was on sale and was baffled that wings and Multi-crew still can't mix. Not only that but wing missions are still broken out from regular missions? Why can't we share any mission we want with the wing and actually cooperate to complete tasks.

With Odyssey this makes very little sense when it comes to completing ground ops. Options are extremely limited in a way that really sucks the fun out of the game.

For instance if you want air support you're limited to two pairs of boots on the ground.

Unless you all bring your own ship in, but then the way to extract requires everyone to land and fly away independently

I understand why things are the way they are. It made alot more sense back in the day before horizons and odyssey.

If some kind of changes aren't made I think it's only going to become harder for me to justify sinking more time into the game.

They aren't fast changes obviously and would probably take a long time to implement but the two things that I think would go the longest way are increased wing size and mixing Multi-crew and wings.

Or barring increasing wing size for more players possibly having a way to group up for specific larger scale ground missions.

Anyways, sorry for rambling, happy flying Commanders

Hi...

Hmm? I had no issues with being in my friends krait while a third team member was was flying his own DBX. Landing on settlement and all.

Also, the roadmap that was released informed us that mission sharing is coming - later this month.

Good for You!! There re a lot of players suffering bugs and disconnections lately.

Hey, out of curiosity did you mean he was in the actual wing or just flying with you.

If he was in the wing then it's entirely possible I was doing something wrong or was just having some kind of issue.

Yeah I'm pretty sure he was in the team with us... but he did crash at some point so I suppose it's a chance that I am mistaken.

How are you teaming up? If you invite someone via menus to your ship as holo presence or multicrew, I'd imagine you can have issues. But if you all meet physically in a location, say, concourse of a station or outpost, team up, and just leave the with whatever team layout works best for you (2 in same ship, 1 in own ship for example), I'd assume that of course it works.

We were doing it through menus. Ill try meeting up through concourse next time time.

Thank you for the suggestion!

Now, I must warn you though, some issues with instancing might come around unless you are using port forwarding. Most networks are configured to use NAT these days. If you or any in your team is using NAT configuration, point them out to this guide.

Then there is the issue of team members in your ship getting in infinite loading screens on FSD jumps or while leaving the mothership via srv or to on-foot.

If you do keep endlessly crashin whilst on physical team doing multicrew, it'd be really helpful for the whole community if you'd enable logging as suggested by dev in that issue tracker link, and send them the logs.

But, I hope you'll do fine and have a lot of fun :D Good luck!!!

Are u serious? Tell fortnite players that they have to do all that jumbo mambo to play 100 players in an instance. It's a joke. FD we suppose it's a big titles company like hello Games, I never needed to work so hard to coop or multiplay in other games. We been playing lan and online games since a long time. Stop selling that Nat bu11$#1t. Come on give me a break.

Elite is very sensitive to errors and timeouts in connectivity, especially when determining which instance you are placed to, so if you'd like to have the best possible experience, you should do it.

Many people have fixed instancing issues in Elite by configuring portforwading, so of course I try to help the best I can.

I really thank you for your efforts, but don't tell me u think this is normal, cause I'm tired of hearing this is what we must expect in a game like this in 2021, we re not talking about 56k modem connections. (n) o_O

I will enable logging if that helps to fix this mess asap. But u gotta know the alpha ended already and we re not beta testers. Just players.

About open Nat I don't have any clue about port forwarding. Do you have more info in that matters any guides? I already been at http://portforward.com/
Didn't help me at all.

Again thanks for your help. This is ruining all the fun and the reasons to play Odyssey.

To determine if you are behind NAT go to https://www.whatismyip.com/

Then, open command prompt on your computer by writing "cmd" on start menu, it should be found. Once open, type "ipconfig" on the command line.

You will get some text there, find IPv4 address. If it's the same as whatismyip.com told you, you are not using NAT and port forwarding does not concern you. If it's not, you are using NAT.

To enter you router to configure it to use port forwarding, use the "default gateway" IP address that ipconfig shows you and put that address on your web browsers address bar. You should enter your router login page. Admin password is some times found in a sticker attached to your router (the same sticker that has it's serial number), or in documentation provided by your internet service provider. The device manual also tells default username and password if it's unchanged by your ISP. You can find the manual using google, usually from manufacturer web site.

Also, https://portforward.com/ has router specific instructions to configure port forwarding.

Hope this helps! I gotta catch some zzz now, I can help you out when I wake up if you're still having issues. :)

Frankly, this.

Why is Elite the only game that I have ever been told to I have to go in and with my router's settings in order to have reliable multiplayer?

Well, I'd say that's because you might have not played a wide variety of multiplayer games on wide variety of devices and/or paid attention to the amount and quality of connections you are able to make, and ever wondered if it's normal or if something is wrong.

In most cases, analyzing this is not even possible unless you are trying to play with people from all over the world, constantly, who have the patience to troubleshoot and the wisdom to notice the issues. Note:

  • Most games, especially MMO and competetive MOBA or FPS, do not allow you to do this, because of region locks. Elite does not have region locks. We can all try to play together.
  • Most games have you choose the data center that everyone who participates in a lobby are then part of. You don't try to bounce data back in real time with US, EU, Asia, and (god bless..) Australia players. Elite tries to find the best data center it has available for you, and everyone in your team, no matter how far away you are from each other. You can imagine that with the loading times Elite has, it is a near impossible task.

Overall, strickt NAT settings (which is almost always the default settings in consumer hardware in 2021) is always high on the list of issue causers in any multiplayer game: features like voice chat not working, high latency, disconnects, low amount of players to matchmake with. Even in same regions and data centers. And there are multiple other features on popular consumer routers that are counter-productive to multiplayer gaming - and you mash them all together when more players are trying to connect with each other, all over the world, you are asking for trouble.

It's incredibly tricky in Elite's case, since it's very sensitive to issues - especially in instancing. If you enable logging you can go and see it for yourself out of curiosity. The choise of instance, or I believe "island" in the log, is made quite fast in system jumps and low wakes. If you'd allow for a longer time to think, people would complain how the game is non-responsive all the time, and the loading times would be abyssmal.

So you have to do some work yourself here, to make sure that you are allowing free flow of data to the best of your ability. Elite already does a pretty good job when you consider what it has to work with.

And FYI, when it comes to Fortnite, it's a pinnacle of netcode developing, and Epic has received alot of praise over the years of what it has accomplished with it. It is better than Apex, CoD, PUBG and all the rest. It also only matches you with players from the same region, so it's not entirely comparable.

I dont agree at all, been playing lan and online games since bbs era, consumer software lets say games, didnt have this complications.

I would not complain so much if I was more time waiting in jump or fsd disengage as long as we don't get so many disconnections and instance problems. This is common sense.

No man's sky cross platform even has better networking.

I have my router setting UPnP as enabled, but ingame says its not. Why?

If he can we can too, maybe he is not behind a nat, maybe he is just in bridged connection. We have to solve it guys. I really wanna play with u guys. We already know is not working for us. Don't bother with a video I believe U. But that's not gonna stop me. Im gonna fix what's wrong on my side to enjoy it. The game is a blast with friends.

This is what we dreamed of when the first elite came out in the 80's

Well, I can guarantee that that I've played more multiplayer Elite than Zac ever has, and I can guarantee that multiplayer elite is trash.
