Discussion What is the most efficient way to crowdsource the 3D system coordinates

Now that we have a partial list of 755 systems (minus a few like no star system, outside the pill/sausage) could perhaps a tool cmdr check if the coordinates of the SB2 systems are the same as in SB3. Which stars have been removed (outside pill) etc. As the coords are no longer based on SOL doing this manually is a PITA. I get the feeling that some cmdrs have tools ready to check this - or after tweaking theirs a bit. Would be good to know what has changed. Would be very much appreciated.

I tried taking the new coordinates, converting back to 1/32 precision and trying to offset back to Sol centric coordinates but had problems with the Z axis on 2 stars I manually tried it on. Anyone else tried offseting to get Sol centric coordinates?
 
I just updated my verifier, now it uses 1000x less memory. The only drawback of the change is that in the presence of many completely incorrect distances, the output will be slightly different compared to the old, extremely slow and memory hungry approach. But this may happen only if there are hundreds or thousands of possible candidate positions, with a very low maximal certainty. (I.e. both the data and hence the results are useless anyway)

I couldn't include the results here, the forum engine thinks they are offensive, so here is a link to the text file instead. Be warned though, it may contain some nasty words. Either I misspelled something, or FDev needs to fix up ED so it does not generate nasty system names. :D

Wouldn't you need at least 3 (ideally 4) systems, that has the same distance from each other both in the Beta 2 and Beta 3 coordinate system to calculate the actual transformation necessary (translation and potential rotation)?

I don't know if that would be useful though, if they changed the procedural generator for the systems, but certainly worth a try.
 
Obligatory.

There is no "up" or "down" in space, except if you happen to be in a strong gravitational field, ie. low orbit - in which case spaceships usually fly upside down in practice, because it ironically gives the astronauts better spatial awareness (because they can see the horizon better if it's above the nose rather than below it).

However, there are a lot of subtle and useful things that you can do with a complete set of coordinates that you can't do if you only have a partial list of distances. That's why we're trying to get coordinates wherever possible.

It's increasingly clear that we're going to have to accept approximate coordinates for many systems. That *is* sufficient for many purposes, and any cases where it isn't can be refined by taking extra distance measurements to improve the approximation. So we need to classify systems according to how precisely we know their position:

- Official coordinate listing
- Measured position, only one valid candidate
- Measured position, multiple valid candidates (within small radius of each other)
- Position uncertain
- Name only, no position estimate

Urgh, never mind. I made a copy & paste error in my script that generated the lists and ended up outputting x,y,x datasets. :D

Yeah, using Eranin as the anchor point has things like I Bootis having moved. I'm starting to think they've either corrected positional errors (given my work on real star data mostly never quite got the same answer, but sometimes did), or otherwise translated/rotated things. Easiest thing is if MB can give us the co-ords of Sol in this new system.

From what I remember, the coords that are shown on the grid in the GM are still approximately the same as they were previously - so they're likely the sol-centric coordinates. So we should be able to get the sol-centric coords for a few of the stars and then figure out the transformation required to get the coords from the dump given by michael brookes

Code is fast and dirty, formating of html not a priority.
In short, it takes two screenshots. Zoom in on selected star, try to get as much top down and as little rotation as possible, F10, rotate to side view, still zoomed in, try to get a background with good contrast to make it easier for yourself and F10.
Select first screenshot (everything happens client side, no upload). Image loads, click on the 4 bounding borders around star, image zooms, click on center of orange circle (not star, thats "off" from what I see). Voila you should have x and y offset more then good enough to snap on a 1/32 grid.
Next select second screenshot, click on horizon grid, click on main star (the one with all the lines going from it...), and there is z offset that also should be precise enough to snap on grid.
Then count the grid to get the main coords (and since it is in game, it is SOL centered).

Code only tested on Opala, getting good enough results.
No error checking included.
Process could of course be optimized a lot. one could be to click all 4 corners instead of borders. Then rotate and counter the slight perspective. Maybe have 4 corners you could drag to fit the grid. Then a circle that you could change size of and align to the blue or orange circle. That would be more accurate.

Please feel free to loan and change code if you want to include in your tools. Personally I will finetune it a bit for my "works-for-me" tools. Its faster and less error prone then writing down a lot of distances.

One thing, the ED Co-ords have Y and Z swapped, and the ED Z (forwards/backwards) negated. Basically swap the Y and Z output.

Another random idea to throw out there:

Once we have an approximate location for a star (i.e. there are multiple grid points in the candidate region), I think it should be possible to search through the set of known stars to find a "decider" star that will help rule out some of the candidate locations. So it would end up being an iterative process - you enter 4 distances in order to get an approximate location, and then the tool tells you which star to get the distance to next, in order to rule out as many candidates as possible. And continue like that until all candidates but 1 are ruled out.

e.g. if you have 2 candidate locations that differ only by the x coordinate, then you would want to find a star that's near the line that connects the 2 candidate points. And furthermore, you could calculate the distance from that reference star to each candidate location, and see if the rounded distance would be different to each candidate, so that knowing that distance would be able to rule out one of the candidates.

From what I remember, the coords that are shown on the grid in the GM are still approximately the same as they were previously - so they're likely the sol-centric coordinates. So we should be able to get the sol-centric coords for a few of the stars and then figure out the transformation required to get the coords from the dump given by michael brookes

Yes, it's the same grid, Sol is definitely at 0:0:0, x is definitely left/right (when facing the galactic core), y is definitely up/down, and z is definitely forwards/backwards.

Using Snuble's little tool to get Eranin's position as at -22.84375, 36.5, -1.1875 that means the offset from the supplied co-ordinates is: -49985, -40985, -49963.34375, although this also places Eranin as 1/32 off on its Y co-ordinate, and given that's the height one I suspect the javascript tool didn't quite measure it correctly (or my clicks were off).

Thus I'd go with Eranin being at -22.84375, 36.53125, -1.1875 as before, and the offsets being: -49985, -40984.96875, -49963.34375

Now to see if any other 'fixed (based on a real star system and in both data sets) has managed to not move....

Edit: Oops, had the Z offset wrong, corrected now.

From what I remember, the coords that are shown on the grid in the GM are still approximately the same as they were previously - so they're likely the sol-centric coordinates.

@Athan: Looks like you've been using my dodgy (x,y,x) lists to calculate that offset:

Thanks, although by the time I'd seen this post I'd written my own quick perl script to do the conversion. I concur with the offset you list, given the raw values based on Eranin alone are -49985.00375, -40984.99875, -24104.9975, and those are likely to be suffering some rounding error.

I've spent a few hours over the past few weekends working on this tool:

This takes the data from B2 and applies it to the map.

It still is a far way from being functional...

But there may be some convergence that can be done, where people can log the system they are in and then have some way of calculating, exporting, sharing the data.

I'm not sure exactly where I'm going with this tool, and it was partly to prove I could make it...

But I'm willing to put in some time and effort to make this work as a combination routing and mapping tool.

Heck, even for one person with a local database of new stars it might prove useful.

This is a wip, but it's compatible with modern tablets, phones, desktops, web, etc.

I have always the same offset, how did you convert the new list coordinates to get the 1/32 grid value?

Edit: Actually it does work OK, I didn't have 'bc' set to high enough precision.

1/32 + 1/64 should round to 2/32, as it's the binary equivalent of going from, say, 0.01 to 0.015, and thus expecting 0.02: ((1/32 + 1/64) * 32) + 0.5 = 2.00000..., , if you trunc() it now you get 2, and thus 2/32.

Likewise for 1/32 - 1/64 you'd expect 1/32, as it's the equivalent of going from 0.01 to 0.005, and thus expecting 0.01 still (just): ((1/32 - 1/64) * 32) + 0.5 = 1.00000..., if you trunc() it you get 1, and thus 1/32, so that works.

You could instead use: new = trunc((old + 1/64) * 32) /32 and you'll also get the correct rounding (assuming we're talking normal 'half-rounding' here). The one caveat with this is to be sure you're working in double-precision so that you don't suddenly lose some precision due to introducing the smaller fraction. (Because you might be going from 19/24 bits of significand before the binary point, and 5/24 bits after to 18/24 before and 6/24 after, which would fail if it NEEDS all 19 bits before the point and likely mean your addition of 1/64 actually fails; shouldn't be an issue for the numbers we're currently working with, but if anyone ever reaches the far right of the galaxy it might be).

So, yeah, either way works, assuming you have enough precision.
