Well, you know "something", but usually there is a lot of factors that can lead to false claims in such "experiments".

In short: we don't know the correlation between being for option a) or b) and:
  • being an member of forum
  • being an member of forum that cares to share his opinion
  • if this is a controversial subject and sharing your opinion can trigger negative feedback - what percentage of a/b crowds respectively is aware of that and is ready to face the consequences of picking any side

Generally statistics/polls are insanely hard to use tool IF you REALLY want to know the real distribution of opinions/perks/values (whatever you are trying to find out) in some social group.

That's not a statistic in itself and if i know what I specially want to achieve i can reduce the variables without loosing too much resolution in the result.

Yes, it's not an exact thing but enough to keep me occupied when the people start picking at each other - at last that is the sole reason for that experiment - boredom of the experimenter.

Just use "forum statistics"*.

*Start any argument with "everybody knows" and similar generalities, and possession of all necessary data and a firm grasp of statistical tools and biases is instantly assumed.

Got it, I have a "thing" for statistic as I have already mentioned and unfortunately mostly bad experience with analyzing their usage, even on official, government level or by "serious" media..
They are usually abused and turned into manipulation tools.

But of course it's all irrelevant there, it's just one of subjects that trigger me to comment ;)

All fine - statistics is a deep field and a nice framing tool... :)
