Allow the VR '2D screen' to be disabled?

Well it's official Fdev will not continue any VR development for Odyssey. So they are perfectly fine with the horrible 2d theater screen, this is a major disappointment and pretty much a deal killer for me. I will no longer be playing, buying ARX or anything from their storefront. They seemed to be more interested in porting Odyssey to consoles than actually fixing all the bugs in the PC version. VR is the best feature this game has, without it, it's just meh. This is CMDR Sirlance signing off.

Did Frontier just scam us? Why announce it now, and not BEFORE the Odyssey launch? They initially said that VR won't be implemented at "launch", but were hopeful that it would be at a later date. And since most of us already bought Odyssey a while back, we won't be able to refund it anymore.
Oh come on. We all know that ”not at launch” means ”probably never”. That is why we were upset back then.

Next plan of action - find some really clever dude (like Georj Costanza who implemented a far better pilot UI colour choice) that understands VR and can <legally> hack the legs portion to at least give us 3D headlook.

Any takers?

VorpX might be problematic (and I don't own it), but doesn't it sit between the game and their servers and therefore might be against their TOS.
Maybe start a gofundme and give the few hundred pounds to Fdev to give us VR headlook, they seem to repond to money much like Pavlov's dogs.
Or, maybe see if the planet tech / borked lighting actually gets fixed for the console release or if they consider it 'good enough' in which case the game will probably hemorrhage players until it really is in maintenance mode.

I may have given up a little bit :(

It required some tea leaf reading, but essentially, I thought it was pretty clear no VR port was either guaranteed, or coming any time soon. That's the reason for this thread 😁

What they've said essentially mirrors what they've said prior, IE:

What they said was essentially 'no change' to their current stance. Which is:

our VR plans are still as we've stated with full integration a possibility in the future but unconfirmed.

So VR bug fixes for now, but no plans to go beyond the current 2D screen etc currently. With Zac C following up with:

So obviously these things may change in the future, they may not, but, like as Bruce said, that is the current situation. (source)

Initial announcement by Bruce here.

EDIT: And now Arthur with this:

With regards to the VR, in terms of there being sort of full VR being implemented into Odyssey as such. There are no plans for it in the works at the moment in time. We're never going to say never. But one thing I don't want to do is string people along, and one thing I don't want you to ever think we're trying to do is say: Oh it's gonna come, it's gonna come.

It's something we'd love to do I'm sure in the future, but it's something there's no plan for in the immediate future. And there isn't a timescale for it. So when I say we're not working on it at the moment, that's true, we're not. There are pressing other things that we want to put into Odyssey, and get right in Odyssey first before we look any further on.

So no change. No budget for a full VR port currently. Maintenance for ship & SRV VR and the 2D screen only.

No great surprise ¯\(ツ)/¯

Totally agree that the 'not at launch' language gives the wrong impression entirely (IE of something coming shortly after launch). But I think in total the signs were there, and somewhat underlined by FDev.

I think we should presume that a VR port will only come if EDO moves some solid units, reaches a point of technical stability, and gets at least a first wave of novel content delivered to retain player attention. We're looking at well after the console launch for them to even start thinking about it essentially...

Some form of hacky solution, to sooth our fevered brows, is honestly the best we can hope for for an age. And they really should consider it.....

How much work would it be to alter one of the vanity camera views so we look from just in front of our avatar’s eyes? Changing some xyz coordinates? Of course that doesn’t solve the issue of interacting with the game world or aiming guns and such, but it’d be a start!

I wish they hadn’t “fixed” being able to clip into our CMDRs - they now fade into nothingness if you step into them - as I was fairly happy doing that 😕

Oo really? When did that come in?

That could actually be more useful for faked 1st person view in some ways no? (If you're nested exactly within the avatar, for best collision detection etc, then you'd probably be clipping through the helmet etc. This seems like it would help with that at least.)

I don't want to read too much into anything, but that does seem a strange thing for them to have spent any time on right now.

But I liked watching my space-feet leaving space-footprints! 😅

I think just making the head disappear (like our seated CMDRs) would have sufficed - I think you’d have to try really hard to look down your own neck ‘ole.

The closest I can stand in front of my avatar without the body disappearing feels about 6 inches too far forward.

When did they say that?

They haven't precisely. They've said this stuff:

Bruce: "VR is near and dear to the communities heart, we've had a lot of questions and talk around VR recently obviously it was introduced in odyssey sort of in a, well in the on foot state you get the virtual screen up and so you can sort of continue your experience in VR on foot, but not in the fully sort of running around with the headset on state that some people would really like. We've been reading your discussions closely, listening to your suggestions, noting them all down, we do intend to make a bunch of changes based on various bugs and fixes that have come up, but that is as far as it's going to go for the time being, sorry to be the bearer of this news to those who will be disappointed by it, but there are no plans to develop VR for Odyssey further than it's current state, however we will be making some fixes and changes (DSS improvement), but that is the state of VR for Odyssey"

Zac: "Obviously, these things may change in the future, they may not, but as Bruce said that's the current situation. BUT that doesn't mean we aren't going to fix the problems that are currently in VR, (DSS bug)"

Well this is interesting 😁

TLDW: The CZ 'black screen bug' seems to put VR users into the native VR view for a moment, rather than in the 2D cinema screen view.

Here's an example of my headlook seemingly being picked up during that moment:

It's another suggestion (alongside the vanity camera VR) that VR may work natively on foot 'by default'.

(And that the pitch in the OP is maybe not totally off the beaten track, in terms of what might be possible)

I actually might switch back to Horizons tomorrow morning, I miss using VR and in Oddy I can't even on not just the VR issues there but a huge list of other things many others have talked about constantly that's still wrong with Oddy. I love Elite, been playing since January 2017, but VR since I first got it was amazing to me every second in Elite.

I support this, but fdev doesn't seem to care, so guess time will tell, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Horizons it is for me unless they change gears on this.
