Thanks Sally for the great work! Here is what fixed the Orange Sidewinder for me.

1) In the ED launcher selected Options | Validate game files
2) --> This ran for ten minutes and gave me an "Incorrect manifest checksum" error
3) I launched ED but still got the Orange Sidewinder
4) I closed out of everything then in Steam did a Verify integrity of game files
5) Then in the ED launcher I did Options | Validate game files again. It seemed to work this time.
6) --> I launched ED and was able to get in the game normally

Have a great day! :)

it would have helped if you stated this and not assumed everyone is a psych...
Next time, be polite and show the solution instead of "scroll down". Don't judge that people didn't to that.
I know that you're trying to help, I appreciate that but let FDev help with the issues.

BTW, I've opened an issue tracker. Using another machine (with steam) worked only doing the update.

I adopted very soon to the new darkness. I also find that space and stars are looking more believable now to me (totally subjective, though). No I'm indifferent about it, so can't vote. Whatever happens will be fine with me.
It is wrong, I see more stars from my backyard through the earth's atmosphere. The background in the odyssey is broken and looks awful, not realistic.

Yeah I was just stating it in case that was why I'm getting the orange sidewinder too in case the update didn't go through properly.

When will the looting of megaships and orbital settlements be fixed? The problem exists and has been reported for over 2 years. The BGS attack scenario is currently impossible to conclude.

Trying here, since the issue tracker will not let me add it.

Missing atmosphere controls, are still missing, even though the patchnotes says it's fixed.

I had this too initially. Was stuck on 'preparing for update' for ages with no progress. I resorted to restarting the PC, disablng cache file check in the ED Launcher, and then validating files. It was another few minutes stuck on 'preparing for update', but then it patched and has worked ever since. Hope you get it sorted soon, mate.

Frontier, please take note of this one. Mission material rewards have been broken for a while now and it's disappointing to see them still not fixed in Update 4 despite many people reporting it. Happens with certain mission types it seems (if you read the below link)

Here is only 1 of numerous threads on it in the Issue tracker - https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/35486

And here is video proof (link is timestamped) -

Please sort it for Update 5,

Also weren't we told the darkness would be sorted in Update 4? Could have sworn we were. Has it been as I've not seen it mentioned in the patch notes?

Almost five and half hours after the launch of the latest update and you still can't sort out why Orange Sidewinder is a thing?

So what worked worked for me to get past the Orange Sidewinder, as many have mentioned, I am on Steam:

1. Verify game files from Steam - Right click on game > Properties > Local Files> Verify Integrity of game files
2. Validate game files from Elite Dangerous Launcher - Open the launcher then go to Options > Validate Game Files

I did have some files download. Restart the launcher and try again.

Thanks so much for these thoughts. Seriously.
Is this Odyssey shot taken following even today's update?

Thanks!
if it helps, then at least as of patch 3 the brightness of the skybox was related to the brightness of the star. So white dwarfs looked amazing (see images below), while brown dwarf systems had a very dark galaxy. Haven't checked properly with update 4 yet! Was in LHS 449 today after patch 4, which looked much better than before. Some dimmer stars still looked odd vs horizons.
