About the glass reflection performance problem,
I just want to confirm that it seems related to a shader (disabling one specific shader solves the problem).
It's used in :
  • the screen of the missions consoles
  • the shop windows
  • some settlement windows
  • glasses in the bar
  • some transparent red colored panels in the concourse "guardrails"

The GPU usage climbs the closer you are to the source of the problem (and looking at it).

Disabling that shader solves the fps problem. Side effect is liquids disappear in glasses, some symbols are removed from the shop windows, etc.

About the performance gain, if i'm close to a shop window, GPU usage drops from 100% to 65% (Nvidia GTX 1080).
I can provide more infos and screenshots if needed.
Can confirm that glass is a major performance issue!

What shader is this cmdr?
 
So what worked worked for me to get past the Orange Sidewinder, as many have mentioned, I am on Steam:

1. Verify game files from Steam - Right click on game > Properties > Local Files> Verify Integrity of game files
2. Validate game files from Elite Dangerous Launcher - Open the launcher then go to Options > Validate Game Files

I did have some files download. Restart the launcher and try again.
I've done both and didn't work.
 
I keep getting orange sidewinder, and when I try to verify in the launcher the menu disappears when I move my mouse over it.

To reiterate - For those still experiencing Orange Sidewinder issues - validating files via Steam doesn't seem to work.

Try validating via Elite Launcher :
  • Launcher Options-> ED Cache disabled!
  • Launcher Options -> Validate Game Files
May take a little while - should show 'Working' then you should be able to play. Worked for me and a lot of others thanks to some great community work - o7
 
Lighting & VFX
  • Lighting improvements have been made to the Megaship fighter launchbay.
Ok, this is trolling now.

Megaship Piracy has been broken for over a year and effects a gameplay scenario FDEV created for Beyond, Chapter 4. This has been reported in the Issue Tracker.

@sallymorganmoore - please ask the project managers how fixing lighting for Megaship fighter launch-bays is a higher priority than fixing Megaship Piracy.

am playıng on geforce go now its not letting me open luncher menus so getting orange sidewinder error i cant land odyssey settlements.
 
Could we please take a side step from people's issues to ask about the patch notes though?

In the Road Map it said today would have 'Codex CMDR Stats'.

Is the 'distance travelled on foot' the only one we are getting? Are there going to be Exobiologist and Mercenary stats?

I am looking at it right now.... 165k ls to go...
We have...

1. Balance: Credits spent on suits, personal weapons, consumables, # premium suits/weapons purchased, credits spent on premium suits/weapons
Note: both of the last two need fixing - thry are cut off and from what I can see have the wrong values, unless I have purchased more than 10,000,000 suits...

2. Combat: Dropships, CZs, CZ wins (by type), total wins, settlements defended, settlements conquered, skimmers killed, scavengers killed
Note: some of these are wrong - I have killed many more than 0 scvengers

3. Crime: Settlements shutdown, Production sabotaged, production thefts, total murders, citizen murders, guards murdered, data stolen, goods stolen, production samples stolen... profiles cloned...
Note: some of these are also at zero... and shouldn't be...

4. Exploration: Shuttle journeys, shuttle distance, credits spent on shuttles, first footfalls, settlements visited
Note: again... these numbers are not correct...

5. Search & Rescue: Surface salvage, illegal salvage... maglocks cut, panels cut, settlement firess extinguished, settlements rebooted...
Note: this should be renamed as Search, Rescue & Salvage... and the numbers are off, again...

6. Crafting: As expected, just like the ship engineering stats

7. Exobiology: New stuff... These numbers are correct!

Note: not an exhaustive list, but you get the idea.

@Sally... Cmdr Codex is in, but the numbers are mostly wrong, and by wrong, I mean set to 0.

  • Walking/Running in Concourse is still a bit of a stuttery affair despite 50-60fps
  • System map key bind STILL not working as it should. When you use the system map icon in the galaxy map it shows you the system map on the targeted system which is correct. But if you use the system map keybind on the targeted system, it will show you the system map for a system you are still in !

if it helps, then at least as of patch 3 the brightness of the skybox was related to the brightness of the star. So white dwarfs looked amazing (see images below), while brown dwarf systems had a very dark galaxy. Haven't checked properly with update 4 yet! Was in LHS 449 today after patch 4, which looked much better than before. Some dimmer stars still looked odd vs horizons.

@sallymorganmoore Can confirm, I found that odd too. Apparently the brighter the star, the brighter the skybox and the background in general. Stars that aren't as bright though, their surroundings will be pitch black, even if it doesn't make sense at all. Because it should be the other way around (as another CMDR pointed out).

The closer to a bright star, the darker your surroundings should be and vice versa.

Another thing that is interesting, when you are really far out in the black (about 300k ls from the main star of the system) at another star in this very same system... the nebulae and the background will be as they should, so the problem lies within the main star of every system and how it illuminates / displays the brightness of other objects around it, in a certain radius at least.

Feedback on ship UI:

  • No indication on how many missions we have, previously we knew if we were at 20 for instance
  • Percentage gone from our ranks for careers (Explore, Combat, Trade etc.), making hard to track our progress.

This big "BROWSE SHOP" button should be split in half and one half should say (take you to) BROWSE SHOP and second half STORED MODULES. That would be perfect.
Can you make that happened Sally ? You are already my hero but you would be legendary. :)
