My favorite language story is form Europe. My wife and I were taking the Thalys from Amsterdam to Paris (maybe 9 or 10 years ago?). The first class section included a meal and they brought us a circular package with some kind of meat in it. I asked the stewardess what it was.... .she looked at me for awhile pensively... and then eventually said "I do not think there is an english word for it"

Edit - I still don't know what it was... maybe some kind of rabbit derived dish?

Ok, so quick google. Apparently the word was german/dutch, but the french butchered it into "yot". Then the british did what they do, and stole it from us without checking if it was the correct way to pronounce it.
So yeah, technically, german are right. Everyone else isn't.
