General / Off-Topic I’m mesmerized by this

What is fascinating is the number of people that say that the game is terrible and frontier are incompetent and keep on hanging around here. It’s puzzling.

Dare I say masochists or people who actually enjoy being angry?

When they actually leave we get an open letter announcing why everybody lost a person of quality.

Ah also let’s not forget the army of know-it-all gamedevs with 10/10 hindsight vision. They never did that job yet they know everything about it… from game design to marketing. I guess those hang around to educate the lot.

While I don't feel like your post is aimed at me per se (I still play the game and like the concept, I am frustrated with it but not really angry as such), the simple fact is that there's no other game like it out there still.

I bought X4 and while I do like it, it's not the same as Elite - that scratches a very particular itch, but it often falls on its face trying to do the scratching, and that's a tad frustrating because it happens so often. Frontier are lucky in that there's so little competition out there; if another game was available that would be very similar in sandbox scope, audiovisual design and flight model I'd have jumped ship (groan) already.

it's synonymous with rubber-necking, people like to watch a good crisis.

It's not important what people are saying exactly- there's usually a lot of hyperbole and know-it-all people on the Internet (if that surprises you, I suspect Internet is fairly new to you) - it's general sentiment that matters - especially to people at Frontier.

And people complain when they care. If they wouldn't care, they would move on.

A lot of folks love Elite , Elite Dangerous and have a long relationship with the franchise . Some people get a little disappointed I guess when the promise of what EDO could be is not quite met . At this point myself I am resigned to EDO being what it is with no further improvements - I'll proably pop in from time to time to maintain my FC balance - but as to spending several hours a week playing it as I used to ? Probably not .

While as a console peasant I’ve not been beset with the dread legion of bugs and such the delay (and quite possible cancellation of last-gen support, if we’re being totally honest about the capabilities of my day-1 PS4...) has taken a little of the wind out of my sails for Horizons, so I’ve been taking an extended break with NMS for some legs-in-space action. Rather disappointingly though, as much as it’s a fun diversion it’s still not Elite and it shows every time I climb into my cartoon ship cockpit. I’ve come to the conclusion that even when I’m aimlessly meandering around space it’s the flight model and atmosphere that hooks me into Elite. It’s not quite arcade, not quite sim, and I actually feel like I’m a future-spaceman zooming about the Milky Way. So in that regard, especially for the console peasants, there really isn’t anything that quite fires my thrusters in the same way.

Spot on OP. And they hang around like Ghosts, telling people who like the game, like Odyssey that they don't know what they are talking about.

Luckily I have some discord servers i'm a member of where we can have proper discussion of the game.

It's not masochism. It's a smear campaign.

Different aspects of the game are important to different people. I am not concerned in the least about terrain repetition, it happened in Horizons too & I accept it an inherent limitation of procedural generation (a limited pool of assets to draw from). I am finding it super easy, barely an inconvenience to just pass those threads by & happily noted that FDev are working on it but there is no easy solution (which is more or less what I expected).

I find it less than fascinating but slightly bemusing that people who are unconcerned, don't care all that much (because it's only a game) or otherwise happy come down on those that aren't. Surely we all want everyone to be happy? I mean it's an ideal to work towards at least.

Schadenfreude is a concept I understand, but I usually direct that towards people that deserve it rather than just unhappy people (however well or badly they express their frustration).

I'm enjoying the parts of the game I still enjoy & generally avoiding the stuff that's not interesting to me or currently broken and if I remark on an issue I try to make sure it's first hand info from the game, but of course if something is reported as broken I can make use of that info to avoid or tread carefully with that feature.

Yeah, I think Elite is the closest I can get to being a nobody sole trader type in the big vast Milky Way without having to be bound to a dull storyline (the older I get the less interested I'm in those) trying to save the galaxy. X4 certainly shares some overlaps, and I still need to get my teeth into that a bit further to properly appreciate, but Elite still does look good despite its age and FDev's best efforts to the contrary.

NMS I can only play for an hour or so at a time, with big gaps inbetween sessions. The flight model is about the dullest of all the space games I tried so far - just handy to get from A to B no frills. But the latest update did make it very pleasing on the eye despite me not really liking the art style - it's a slick looking game now though, and I previously refunded it for running and looking like a limp dog. Elite otoh seem to move into a different direction from a great starting position, which is very frustrating to experience.

See I would love to play the game, if it would work as advertised on my hardware, which more then exceeds the recommended hardware requirements. Yet it can hardly produce more then 30fps in a measly 1080p. But I guess that's also somehow my fault :)
That's how you properly mesmerise.
