New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

I've lost frame rate in this patch. I won't take up too much of this topic to talk about it but lots of people I'm talking to are claiming the same.

On-foot settlements did about 45-50 FPS for me in Update 4 but now I am getting 35-45 with the same High preset settings. That's on a 2080Ti with a Ryzen 9 CPU.

Not tried the update yet so I'm writing out of my as...sessment of today reports, but I read they added a bit of granularity to graphics option, like different levels of detail for projected and spot shadows, together with an AMD sharpening technique (CAS), and maybe other stuff I'm missing....might be worth a check if that stuff is set in a way to actually degrade performance even more than the current low baseline.

(By the way, that planet looks surprisingly horrid, hope to be able to check for myself by tomorrow and see if it's something to do with graphics options not behaving, or if they screwed LOD badly)

Edit - @BlackMaze , just stumbled upon your other thread on the subject, turns out you were aware already, nevermind.

Instead of making a new topic... What are people their impressions of the planet tech in Update 5?

Something that I've noticed is that planets appear much uglier from orbit now unless you get close. I fear this is from an attempt to improve performance? I didn't think the planets could look uglier.

Oh geez, that's lower levels of detail than I'm used to back when I was playing on XBox One, never mind Series X.

We're sure this isn't them testing some kind of retro Frontier: First Encounters filter for the planets, right?

"ED Odyssey: Voodoo 2 edition"

Gave a quick look in game this evening and gladly the few planets I looked at weren't even nearly as messy as that one. Then I also remembered I left terrain detail on ultra and forgot to check the difference on high. 🤦‍♂️

If it can be of any consolation, the difference in performance from high to ultra shouldn't be so wide as to justify the lower compromise, if that's the loss in detail it might be worth loosing a few frames to go ultra. Ultraforcapture, on the other hand...

Note I had to downsize these images to meet the max 1MB image size limit. Originals are better.

Is the issue the radiating striations away from the main crater? Reminds me of Ganymede, but they could probably be toned a bit down in ED. Looks like a late overprint when mixing textures.

:D S

No issue (other than the repeating terrain which is also apparent in those images). Did you read the post I was replying to?

Yes. I don't get the "ugly" part. Repeating terrain in places, yeah. But otherwise I see nothing ugly in those images.

Perhaps it's the device you're using (phone perhaps?). BlackMaze's screenshot is very bad - very low quality, very low detail. It looks like a 200x100 pixel 2kb jpeg, whereas it is in fact a full 3440x1440 pixel jpeg. I was showing what I'm seeing - presumably what it should be like. Chalk and cheese. Hopefully it will help BlackMaze find what's wrong, or at the very least more feedback for FDev.

Yeah their image is pretty bad. I'm viewing on a 34" ultrawide, and can only agree that yours look fine as well. Not sure what their graphic settings are for that screenshot. But I have also seen a lot of images lately that are supposed to be bad, but look fine to me. Hence the confusion.

This AMD FidelityFX CAS tool was seemingly thrown in desperation to appease performance complaints, however, it underperforms by introducing sharpening artifacts, but without it, the fidelity is lost and appears blurry. I never thought I'd ever say this but I need to have a break from this game, the game I absolutely love, which is being destroyed by poor development and management decisions. This terrible approach is turning me into something I'm not and it's time to step away for a bit.

Seriously, and with respect, read his post properly. He said his graphic settings are on HIGH Preset, and I set mine to the same. This is the issue he's highlighting.

Have you ever played and enjoyed Elder Scrolls Oblivion madly when it came out at 15 FPS?

Nope, never played Elder Scrolls Oblivion. Not a game I'm interested in.

I have dealt with the planetary tech up to now, and even enjoyed some of it regardless of the FPS; I don't care about the FPS. But the last patch has almost destroyed the planet tech for me: the fidelity is much worse, rendering is wors, the popping is worse, the shadow shading is worse, invisible rocks have not been fixed etc

Here the BlackMaze screenshot and mine, both at HIGH Preset settings, this time cropped to show just the big crater. Hopefully this shows the issue a little clearer.

EDIT: Note that I did NO rescaling/resizing on these images. I simply cropped BalckMaze's screenshot, which was originally at 3440 x 1440 pixels. I say this to reinforce that I didn't introduce any additional degradation to BlackMaze's image.

The rocks porblem are because the server. in all the rest im convinced that the planets look MUCH better by FAR now compared with Horizons. and, im trully cant believe that people just deny it. it have problem yes A LOT. but come on. the planets with the cientifically accurate atmosphers look "almost" in some cases photorealistic.

So a technical issue for one (or some) users. There can be many areas where there are issues, including how the final image is rendered. Theirs almost look like some sort of blur is on.
