Update 5 and still poor FPS.

I'll chime in here with my experience as well. My gaming laptop specs:

MSI GT75 Titan 8SF:
  • Intel i7-8750H @ 2.20 GHz
  • NVIDIA RTX 2070
  • 32 GB DDR4 RAM
  • Game installed on a RAID-0'd pair of M.2 NVMe's, same as the operating system
---

Couple of settlements:

Laister's Workshop, Kuma - Medium Industrial Settlement with 1 PWR, 1 CMD, 1 IND and 1 HAB buildings
  • ~35 FPS with the power off, fires and 11 scavengers present, with heavy stuttering only while moving around the settlement
  • Improved to 45-60 FPS once all scavengers were eliminated
  • ~40-50 FPS with the power turned on
Yarovy's Obligation, Kuma - Small Military Settlement with 1 PWR, 1 CMD, 1 STD and 1 HAB buildings
  • ~35 FPS upon landing, settled at ~50 FPS with 8 scavengers and fire present
  • Improved to 60-70 FPS with scavengers eliminated and power on
Mckenzie Dredging Installation, Kuma - Medium Mining Settlement with 1 PWR, 1 CMD-HAB hybrid, 1 EXT and 1 STD buildings
  • ~30-35 FPS with 8 scavengers and fire present, heavy stuttering while moving about the settlement
  • Improved to 40-50 FPS with scavengers eliminated and power on
---

And Graphics:
  • 1080p
  • Shadows on Medium
  • Anti-Aliasing set to SMAA
  • Supersampling set to 1x
  • Texture Filter Quality set to Trilinear
  • AMD FidelityFX CAS On
  • Everything else on High

I sympathize mate, but I also sympathize with Fdev, even though it's there fault. My empathy doesn't go missing because someone has made a boo boo. I'm pretty sure they are suffering too and last thing they want to be doing is trying to fix it.

What they should have done is released it as a live beta, until the console release.
Amen to that.

I cant point to a specific update of the last 2-3 but I am def getting better performance on planets. Geforce 2070, i7-8700k. It's still not Horizons fps, but realistically I shouldn't expect it to be as planets are -when working properly- clearly a more significant rendering task. In particulatar 'Ultra for capture' was a slideshow at first but now I feel like is approaching playable (>30fps).

AAAAAAANNNNNDDDDDD

People still never read the Odyssey Roadmap till the final launch on the console.

The performance will be looked over in the interim between Update 5 and Full Release with the console.

<snip>
What are you trying to say to those of us who paid the full priced, final product that released on PC on the 19th of May but doesn't work as advertised and promised (repeatedly)?

Shut up and deal with it?

I mean, yes, that's effectively what FDev appear to be telling us - because their "road map" (I still cringe at that joke of a short bullet point list quickly drafted on the way to the pub Friday evening, where half of them where copy/pastes of the same "bug fixes and improvements" line, but I digress) ended with yesterday's patch.

And all we know at this stage about the time between today and whenever the console release date is (wHo KnOwS when/if that will be, right?!) is that they're focusing on consoles incl. performance of which some may drop off the lorry for us PC plebs if we're lucky.

They've been directly asked several times now (including by myself) and their silence on the topic of continued performance patches for PC (they're desperately needed) is quite telling i.e. not going to happen. To leave the PC version in the state it's in for several months (unless they pull a u-turn of course) is quite honestly appaling.

But they've got our money already (including my other hundreds of Euros worth of cosmetics spent previously) hence all we can do is to pointlessly vent into the void here (did Arf even respond to any posts in his thread?) until our impotent rage has subsided and we either suffer through the game or just leave it, so fair play Frontier - least I can do is not throw bad money after good meaning Arx spending is a thing of the past effective 19/05/21, and I will never buy any product from Frontier again. I waited like a saint hoping they come clean but even my patience is not limitless, and I'm fed up. I honestly think they lost control of their golden child.

Hope it was worth it for those sweet FY20 revenue numbers.

@Arthur Tolmie You said that you would tell us the truth, even if it's not what 'we' wanted to hear. The silence over this question is deafening.

Tbh at this stage I'm past caring now. Who knows, they might wait a little to see if the playerbase will put up with it, and if the noise becomes too much they might change course and issue a couple of 'emergency' patches at some point this year. Or maybe not. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I understand, I'm still going to keep plugging away, and hope that posts like this might actually open some eyes in Cambridge.

Ryzen 5 3600
RX580 8GB
16 GB RAM

...a visit to the concourse of a Planetary Settlement gave me 12-15fps (1920x1080) as a worst-case.
Notably even on vanilla all-low settings I can't get 60fps, no matter what.

Anyone got any thoughts on OP’s settings? I would try shadows high or med rather than Ultra and increase Terrain work setting, his gpu should handle it. V sync on or off? If his FPS is really that bad maybe off is his best option. Don’t understand the “Borderless setting” would that make a difference?

I feel I should point this out for a CM or Dev who reads the forums as its very very bad performance.
I have a brand new system with :-

AMD Ryzen 7 37000x
Nvidia 3060 RTX 12g
32g Ram
Win 10
The game is running from an M.2 drive
at 1080 60hz

And I was running at constant <30 fps and sometimes as low as 4fps at a planetary settlement.
This was after Update 5 !

I know some will say "but but my potato runs it fine".
but the devs and CMs need to know that performance has not increased with update 5 for every player.

How does it perform in Benchmarking/Other games?

If you are a long time player it is a good idea to remove the old GFX yo uhave collected over time.

Paul made a post about this:

Here is the take-away. For me it made a big difference:

Navigate to this file location:
  • %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics
  • Make a backup of every file in the graphics folder, and place it somewhere safe for future reference.
  • Delete the original files in the Graphics folder.
  • Restart the game.

During the Alpha the big difference in FPS was gained by lowering the Shadows sets - you have both ( they have two settings now with no actually help to explain what the two settings actually affect !! ) set to Ultra - try and drop to Medium.

You have the graphics card I'm wanting to buy to replace my GTX 1060 - but I'm actually getting better FPS than you! even though my CPU is much older and my game is on an old HD ( not an SSD ) your FPS should easily be double mine at least!

The Op, @BL1P, has a new system, so shouldn't have much in the way of old settings, and secondly,
Though its basically :-
Removed the "C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics" Folder.

screenshots removed

Which is basically hit Ultra then remove bloom and blur after setting display.
has already deleted those files.

As others have said, this build should not be performing like this, so I was wondering how it's performing in other circumstances - e.g. 3DMark, other games, etc. to try and work out of it's a configuration issue with his PC, or something else.

Those that are getting worse performance are you all on Nvidia cards?

I for one and getting much much better performance on an AMD card (5700XT). I've also noted that it seems from the screenshots in this thread that even systems with Nvidia cards are defaulting the upscaling setting in the graphics menu to "AMD FidelityFX CAS" - what happens if you change it back to "normal". For me the visual quality degrades (IMO) so I prefer it on. But I'm wondering if this is causing an issue on Nvidia cards....
I have a GTX 1080 and it now crashes windows with 0.75 SS and CAS set to ON (default also for nvidia). Strangely, it seems ok if i keep SS at 1.0 (which isn't very useful)

Runs Total WarWarhammer II scaven benchmark on Ultra settings with an average of 90-100fps which is v good for the card.

Unity Heaven Benchmark seems good for a none OCed benchmark rig.

Cpu seems to be running vgood as expected on all cpu heavy games I have tried.

To be honest its that new of a PC I have only really had time to Install some games and to play Elite.
I ran some total war warhammer benchmarks as they stress the CPU when you run them on ultra and I wanted to test that.
I got the Heaven benchmark after the 4fps on foot fiasco in Elite.
Results seem fine for Heaven at Ultra Ultra (I think) for a 3060 non TI
As Elite is my favourite game I was quite upset at the results I got at a settlement. (<--- Massive understatement ) :)

If you haven't already done so, send the logs to Frontier, your system would be a good use case!
