I think the lynx should get the same treatment as the leopard, because if we combine both Iberian and Eurasian we have 55 votes, one less than the all the leopards combined and above the puma.
I've discussed this with some other people already. I appreciate these suggestions and I know they are formulated from a good-faith standpoint. But...
I have to draw a strict line to delimitate the category of animals I'm including in the meta-wishlist. In this sense, I think the most objective and less controversial category to classify the animals in this context is the animal species. I know some people can be more picky about specific leopard or wolf subspecies than about lynx or sloth species. But if start making exceptions of this rule some animals would be treated unfairly compared to others, and the meta-wishlist could potentially turn into a mess.
Suppse we merge all lynxes. Now, should we do the same with the otters, the deers, the gazelles? Should we include siamang inside a superior "gibbon" category? Imo from the moment you deviate from the common and scientific category of animal species, everything starts being subjective and people will complain one way or the other.
This way, of course people will raise concerns about the potential of mixing species and what not, like you did, but the system at least remains consistent and in accordance with molecular biology/genetics.
In the case of animals that are already in-game, I do allow people who vote for subspecies because again I reckon people can be quite picky and want an additional zebra, wolf or whatever.

Anyhow, I would not worry too much. If Frontier devs do take this list into consideration, they are smart enough to figure out that all the lynxes (or other animal) mixed make up for a top animal choice.

Lol yeah, I think the end of that rabbit hole is just ending up with 1,000 votes for "animal"

You can always do something later on. Maybe even on certain other classificatons.

I think it becomes unclear how to combine entries or an endless discussion on what to combine. Gibbon species would be something that some people would like to see combined but for me, separate would be more accurate/usefull.

I understand the reasoning behind it and i respect it. I suggested it only for the lynx beause is the only animal in that situation in the list. The second animal in a similar situation is the tree-kangaroo, which combining both species gets 29 votes, way behind from the 55 votes of the lynx.

I understand the reasoning especially for the Lynx. I think most people would prefer a Lynx species but were a bit more specific.

After roughly half a year, and following the requests made by numerous forum users, I'm setting up this thread in order to start another 'Essential animals meta-wishlist' where I record users' animals wishlists and put them all together on a meta-wishlist. Given that we've gotten 3 DLCs since I started the previous thread; this time around I ask you all to please post a list of just 20 habitat animals.

The more people participating, the bigger the sample size will be so better conclusions can be drawn. I’m writting down every user who posts their list in order to avoid having repetitions. I intend to keep this updated as much as I can. Last update: 16th June, 2021

The spirit and basic rules of the thread will be similar to those of the first one. Which means:
  • For the sake of keeping the same wishlist structure, I ask you to post your 20 essential habitat animals that you’d like to see in the game. Lists with anything above 20 animals will be discarded.
  • Exhibit animals will be omitted from the main meta-wishlist. Exhibit animals include arthropods, amphibians, small reptiles (< iguanas), small fish and mouse-size mammals.
  • Flying birds and bats usually housed in aviaries will be omitted from the main meta-wishlist. Flying aviary birds include birds of prey, parrots, Columbiformes (pigeons), Passeriformes (small birds), Charadriiformes (gulls) and so on. Mainly ground-dwelling or semi-aquatic birds (mainly Waterfowl, Galliformes, Ratites, Pelecaniformes, Penguins, etc.) will be added to the list.
  • As a general rule of thumb, animal species is the preferred category for animal submissions. Subspecies from already in-game animals are also accepted. Subspecies from animals that are not in-game will automatically be allocated to the superior species category. Specific domestic animals breeds are also accepted.
  • To simplify data collection, those answers that include several species in one slot (eg.: 1. Any species of sloth) will be automatically treated as a single animal and added to the most requested species inside that generic animal group (eg. in this case: Brown-Throated Three-Toed Sloth). This obviously leads to an underestimation of the total key requested animals.

PS: Check darthquell's thread for Essential exhibit animals and Spiderhawk's thread for Essential aviary animals.

I know we just got the DLC not even 2 weeks ago and this list is still pretty new, but aside from the top 2, there’s a clear desire for North American animals. It’ll be really interesting whenever thet comes out how it affect this list. 5 of the top 10 are all NA animals that have a very fair chance at making it in. I’m hoping it’s next.

I definitely get the desire for more NA animals since there are some in the game and it is a region that has been ignored so far, but I think it would be a good opportunity for them to do an animal pack and add some arctic animals in as well. I really hope we get the arctic fox, walrus, and puffin.
