Big Elite Streamers Giving Up On Streaming Elite?

Agreed. I only do it for fun and the community company. The amount of money generated by streaming is trivial and it is a lot more "work" than it looks. I'd hate to do it full-time, it would completely take the fun out of it. Pocket change is exactly right for most streamers.

To be meaningful and accessible these sort of events need assistance from Fdev. Fdev aren't interested/too busy elsewhere. The biggest one (whilst is currently still operating) is "Turning the Wheel" which has had virtual no acknowledgement from Fdev.

Cheers,

Drew.

Turning the Wheel isn't the biggest event. That was, and will likely always be, Distant Worlds 2. Not just because of the numbers who took part, but also because of the widespread coverage it got across some major press outlets, none less so than the New Scientist magazine. No other event came close. Only a DW3 event would have topped it imo.

But I do agree with you in regards to Frontiers lack acknowledgement for some community events. They've blew it. They had a dedicated community of creators at one point, and major events like Distant Worlds (but not exclusively DW), others too, like your Salome event, were things that frontier could have built upon and encouraged by providing better tools to make the community events even bigger and better. Today its like they never even happened.

Those big community events carried this game for years when there was a lack of content coming from the devs. Whose going to carry the game now? No one it seems, and relying on frontier to do it alone.... well... we all know how that's going to turn out.

I watch plenty of youtubers. Some of them about ED. Yesterday, I was trying to figure out material and texture in the LOD settings. It does not tell in the LOD menu? Why? I also watch D2EA every weak, because in the middle if this mess, leading to polarization of the community into pure black vs white, and nothing in between (divide and conquer), Astro is one of the few ones keeping his head calm. Not that he can't be critical. I watch Yamiks, because that (and The State of the Game) is the only two places to go to if you want to find humor related to the game. I watch OA because of his calming voice, and Exigious, Platter, The Pilot and everyone else I can find, because I enjoy it (much more than soccer on the TV), and because I learn stuff about the game.

To those of you being "too sophisticated" for that: (y)

I've watched quite a lot of ED content creators on Twitch and YT, but I'm not sure ED is a game where less content creators = less players. I think that's more true to the "game of the month" that currently trends on Twitch and YT. Games like Among Us, Fall Guys, etc, were made popular through streamers, whereas a game like ED is the kind that attracts a more hardcore base of gamers. No one will be playing Among Us or Fall Guys a year from now, let alone five.

People who play ED might take breaks from it but they always come back, assuming they had the patience to get through those gruelling first few weeks. ED isn't the one night stand you ran into at the nightclub. It's the ex who knows exactly what you want and can't stop going back to. Streamers aren't streaming ED because the Odyssey hype was killed at launch. It's not profitable for them. Look at Cyberpunk. Everyone streamed it for about two weeks, then the hype died and everyone quickly went back to Fortnite or Warzone.

But I guarantee they still play ED off stream.

Average and peak numbers for both those games in the last 30 days are still higher than Elite. Less content creators for a buggy niche game will mean less people getting interested in said buggy niche game. Especially new players. It was because of several prominent ED content creators that have produced less content and streamed other alternatives was the reasoning for me choosing go give a certain alternative a try.

to be fair, they're leaving because the players are.

not because they don't get the inner beauty of the game like the 'intended' players do.

you're applauding a group of people jumping a sinking ship that you are still on.

Game development often follows the whims of the playerbase. You can clearly see that it has happened to Elite over the years, with the ruination of progression and any sense of balance and challenge due to the constant witless whining from the community.
I have no problem with the players who caused this state of affairs leaving. If it means the game dies as a result, then let it die. It's better than to see the game move ever away from the original vision for the sake of cattering to a crowd who never trully got on board.

I watch streamers play Tarkov, I play Elite Dangerous.
Some game I don't play but like to watch (factorio for example, or dark soul).
For others it's the opposite (survival game like 7 days to die are kinda boring to watch, but they are fun to play).
And some I watch and play. Sometimes I may even watch to learn how to play. Like when I started europa universalis 4.

I don't like watching sport on TV. To me, watching a stream/youtube is like watching sport. Lots of people watch football, but most people don't play it. It's even worse for the olympic.
Gaming also have a competitive scene, one I'm certainly not able to compete in. Also, less pressure to watch than play competitively.

Yeah there's only a few games I can watch others playing, I wonder if it's partly about skill level, I can watch some of the best Tarkov players and it's brutal how good they are. But watching someone mining in Elite ... nah. Some of the AX streams are entertaining, again because they have skills I don't possess!

The issue is also that the highest skill activity in ED is PvP, and watching two dudes skillfully reverski for 30 minutes is ultra boring.

Which ever way you cut it, most of the youtube streamers I watch are all a) posting less elite content and b) several are now posting content from other games.

EliteWeek (NMS)
D2EA (SC)
Will/Kate (SC)
ObsidianAnt (MSFS)
Yamiks

Some of these were pretty exclusively ED content creators, until Odyssey; but I suspect they are actually fairly representative of the player base.

Content creators are moving on trying to find an audience, and showing their viewers alternatives.

I think alot of people if it was not for odyssey would never have looked at competing games, are now looking at them , and being pleasantly surprised.

There was a time when ED enjoyed the high ground over some of its competitors, in that it was released and relatively bug free. However when you consider them both and bug-ridden and unfinished then suddenly ED doesn't look as good any more.

Down to earth astronomy is a funny one. You'd assume from the name he's more into exploration of the galaxy, which there isn't a lot of currently in SC. I guess he may have decided which game may prevail in the future when they do get around to expanding their galaxy (SC).

Spot-on! Elite was the best space game in town. Then Frontier torpedoed it by releasing the alpha-build of Odyssey, a decision that will rank up there with New Coke. They didn't realize that the game (pun) had changed, that they were no longer the only decent space game in town. And now they are reaping the whirlwind.
